2 2 Water/Methanl Injectin V2 IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTICE REGARDING METHANOL AEM strngly recmmends that users never exceed a 50% methanl cncentratin when using any AEM Water/Methanl system r cmpnent. All AEM water/methanl injectin systems and cmpnents (pump, lines, fittings, filter, flw sensr, tank, and nzzles) are 100% chemically cmpatible with methanl. Hwever, fr safety reasns we strngly recmmend that users never use mre than a 50% methanl cncentratin in ur systems. Methanl is a txic and highly flammable chemical. 100% methanl ignites easily and burns vigrusly with an almst undetectable flame. Methanl can be absrbed thrugh the skin, and even small amunts can cause blindness r even death. Using this fluid at high pressures, withut dilutin, in an under-hd envirnment with nyln lines and push-t-cnnect fittings is very unsafe. The perfrmance advantages f using greater than 50% methanl cncentratins are small, if they exist at all. Hwever, the safety issues are very real and far utweigh any perceived benefit f running high cncentratins f methanl. 6 6 Water/Methanl Injectin V2 Installatin Checklist The fllwing list f steps is an verview f the installatin prcess. A cmplete and mre detailed list f each step including ptinal peripherals is defined later in this dcument.

7 INSTALLATION 7 q q q q q q q q Install Tank The tank must be munted such that it is belw the injectin pint. Failure t d s may lead t fluid leaking int the intake tract due t gravity r siphning, which may result in engine damage. Fasten with 4 f the 8 supplied #8 sheet metal screws alng with the 4 large washers r the 5/16-18 blts and Nylck nuts. Install Pump Select suitable lcatin fr pump near and belw the lwest fluid level f tank. Fasten with 4 f the #8 sheet metal screws alng with the 4 small washers r the #8-32 blts and Nylck nuts. Cut supplied nyln hse with a sharp razr blade and install frm tank t pump. Install Cntrller Discnnect grund side f battery during electrnic installatin. Find suitable lcatin fr cntrller inside driver s cmpartment. Find lcatin in driver s field f view and install external LED. Fllw the wire diagram and cnnect wires frm supplied wire harness. Cnnect bst hse line t bth cntrller and manifld pressure. Flush Tank Cnnect the remainder f hse t pump. (DO NOT CONNECT NOZZLE.) Fill tank with water. (AEM recmmends using distilled water.) Turn n ignitin pwer (Arm switch) t pwer n cntrller. Use TEST buttn n cntrller t flush the tank int a separate cntainer. Press and hld t activate the test functin. (Repeat several times t cmpletely flush system.) Drain tank and prceed t next step. Cnnect Nzzle t System Select nzzle and cnnect t nyln hse. Fill tank with water. Use TEST buttn n cntrller t test cmplete system. System Check While pushing the TEST buttn, ensure that n errrs are reprted and that the system is prducing a gradually increasing flw ut f the nzzle. This may require pressing the TEST buttn multiple times t purge the system. Drain tank and fill with desired water/methanl mixture. DO NOT use a hydrcarbn fuel. Water and methanl are the nly supprted fluids. Install Nzzle The nzzle must be munted such that it is abve the tank. Failure t d s may lead t fluid leaking int the intake tract due t gravity r siphning, which may result in engine damage. Find a suitable lcatin t install nzzle. Nzzle must be munted befre the thrttle plate. Nzzle shuld als be munted after the MAF sensr, if present. Nzzle must als be munted after any interclers. Install nzzle, fllwing instructins fr mdifying intake t accept the nzzle. Cut and install nyln hse frm pump t nzzle. Ensure that the hse is nt resting, near, r running n any mving r ht parts. Tune Engine Engine tuning is usually required in rder t maximize ptential pwer gain.

8 8 Water/Methanl Injectin V2 Pump and Tank Install Find a suitable lcatin t munt the tank and pump. The tank must be munted such that it is belw the injectin pint. Failure t d s may lead t fluid leaking int the intake tract due t gravity r siphning, which may result in engine damage. The tank and pump must be munted in the same area. Pump may be munted n exterir f vehicle but shuld be munted away frm wheel wells r ther areas where it will cme int direct cntact with water r rad debris. Pump failures that have clearly been caused by expsure t water/mud/debris will nt be cvered under warranty. This includes, but is nt limited t, the bed f a truck and the inside f the fender wells. Find a lcatin where the pump will remain dry. 5-Galln Tank Install Befre munting the tank, check the area under the desired munting lcatin fr fuel tanks, fuel lines, r any ther bstructins. Munt the tank in an upright level psitin as shwn belw. Mark the fur munting pints and drill with a 3/8 bit. Use the supplied 5/16-18 blts, nuts, and large OD flat washers fr munting the tank int yur vehicle. IMPORTANT: Use the supplied large OD washer t spread the lad n the plastic munting ears f the tank. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN! Nuts shuld just be snug; they are lcking nuts and will nt lsen. Overtightening will crack the plastic and cause leaks and vid the warranty. Nte: All tanks are tested fr leaks during assembly. A special sealant adhesive is used t bnd the plastic tank t the metal fitting. DO NOT attempt t tighten the fitting any further! The pump must be lcated in the same area as the tank and shuld be munted at r belw the lwest fluid level height. Take nte f the directin f flw, indicated by the arrws n the pump bdy, when munting the pump.

9 INSTALLATION 9 Use fur #8 sheet metal screws alng with the 4 small washers r the #8-32 blts and nylck nuts t munt the pump. The pump can be munted in any psitin hrizntally r vertically. Once the tank and pump are munted, cut the apprpriate length f tubing needed t cnnect the utlet fitting n the tank t the inlet fitting n the pump. Make sure there are n sharp bends in the tubing. Cut the tubing t length with a clean perpendicular slice using a sharp razr blade, making sure the ends are clean and square. Push in the hse at the tank and pump t install. Make sure they are pushed in all the way and check with a light tug n the hse. Secure the hse t the chassis using sectins f the supplied hse ruting strip r with zip-ties. Cntrller Install The prgressive cntrller is NOT waterprf and shuld NOT be munted in the engine bay! Find a cnvenient lcatin fr the cntrller inside the driver s cmpartment. The adjustment knbs shuld remain in an accessible lcatin but still remain prtected frm pssible water incursin. If yu need t extend the wires t munt the cntrller use at least 16 AWG wire fr the pump and cntrller grund circuits and 18 AWG fr the remainder. The cntrller cntains an externally accessible fuse; n additinal fuses are required. Use the supplied zip-ties t munt the cntrller. The plarity is unimprtant. **Nte: If yu need t extend the w ires t munt the cntrller use at least 16 AWG w ire fr the pump and cntrller grund circuits and 18 AWG fr the remainder. External LED Install Find a suitable lcatin in the driver s line f sight t munt the external LED. Munt the LED and run the wires t the cntrller. The LED indicates the peratin f the cntrller. If the pump is ff and there are n errrs, the LED will be ff. If there are n errrs and the pump is n, the LED intensity will vary with the pump speed. If there are any errrs, they will be indicated by flashing the LED. Bst Pressure Hse Using the supplied vacuum tee and rubber hse, tap int a manifld pressure (vacuum/bst) line. Pump/Tank Flush After all wires are hked up, add water t the tank and, with the hse pinted int a cntainer, press and hld the TEST push buttn n the cntrller mdule. The TEST buttn can be used t test the system. The pump speed will gradually increase frm zer t full speed within 3 secnds and then remain full fr anther 3 secnds befre stpping. Repeat the TEST buttn prcedure until yu are sure the system is free f any debris that may have been in the lines r tank. Drain the water ut f the tank and refer t the next sectin n installing the nzzle. Nzzle Selectin and Assembly This injectin kit includes three differently sized injectin jets that cver a very large range f hrsepwer levels. Use the fllwing chart t select the apprpriate jet fr yur pwer level. The kit cmes with ne medium nzzle already preassembled. If yu find excessive debris in the screen, check yur tank fr cntaminatin. When installing the screen it is nly necessary t be slightly tighter than finger tight. D nt ver-tighten. The nyln washers are reusable but a spare is included.

13 INSTALLATION 13 Nzzle Munting Select the lcatin where the nzzle will be installed. Nzzle must be munted such that it is higher than the tank. Failure t d s may lead t fluid leaking int the intake tract due t gravity r siphning, which may result in engine damage. Nzzle must be munted befre the thrttle plate. Nzzle shuld als be munted after the MAF sensr, if present. Nzzle must als be munted after any interclers. In mst instances, munting the nzzle 6 8 ahead f the thrttle bdy prvides an excellent cmbinatin f air charge cling and cmbustin cntrl. In mst instances, the air charge piping can be drilled and tapped fr 1/8 NPT t directly munt the nzzle. If using thin walled tubing it s suggested that a bung be welded t the piping. Munting hle shuld be tapped deep enugh t allw the end f the nzzle t be nearly flush with the interir f the intake nce the nzzle is fully installed. Pump/System Check The TEST push buttn n the cntrller mdule can be used t test the system. Press and hld the buttn t activate the pump. The pump speed will gradually increase frm zer t full speed within 3 secnds and then remain full fr anther 3 secnds befre stpping. When the buttn is released the cntrller will return t nrmal peratin. Add water t the tank and, with the nzzle pinted int a cntainer, press and hld the TEST buttn. The flw will start gradually and increase t a steady amunt. If this happens, then yur system is cnnected prperly. Check and repair any leaks. Drain the water ut f the tank and install the nzzle. Fluid Cmpatibility Under NO circumstances shuld any hydrcarbn based fuel ever be used with this system. Water and methanl are the ONLY fluids t be used.

14 14 Water/Methanl Injectin V2 SYSTEM ERRORS The cntrller will cntinuusly check fr errrs; when an errr is detected it will be reprted t the user by a flashing sequence f the external LED, as well as a crrespnding red flashing sequence f the status LED. Damage t vehicle r engine may ccur if these faults are nt reslved immediately. The water-injectin system may nt perate prperly r at all while an errr cnditin exists. Please refer t the table belw fr further infrmatin. # f Flashes Errr Descriptin 1 Lw Fluid Pump Open Circuit Pump Shrt Circuit Vltage Out f Range Cntrller Errr The amunt f fluid in the tank has been detected t be belw the level f the sensr. An pen circuit has been detected in the circuit (wiring) that drives the pump. A shrt circuit has been detected in the circuit (wiring) that drives the pump. The vltage pwering the cntrller has been detected t be utside the range f 8.5V 16V. An internal cntrller errr has been detected. Cntrller/Pump Status - BstSafe Enabled - Pump will cntinue t run - BstSafe Enabled - Pump will NOT cntinue t run - BstSafe Enabled - Pump will NOT cntinue t run - BstSafe Enabled - Pump will NOT cntinue t run - BstSafe Enabled - Pump will NOT cntinue t run Recmmended Actin Refill fluid reservir. Check fr a blwn cntrller fuse and pump wiring fr discnnects. Check pump wiring fr shrts t the chassis. Check pwer cnnectins t cntrller and that vehicle charging system is perating prperly. 16 16 Water/Methanl Injectin V2 CONTROLLER Settings The AEM Water/Methanl Injectin Cntrller is a prgressive type cntrller. This means that fluid will be injected in prprtin t the amunt f bst that is detected by the internal MAP sensr. In ther wrds, mre bst equals mre fluid. It is therefre imperative that the vacuum/pressure cnnectin be made prperly and securely r vehicle/engine damage culd ccur. In additin, the cntrller will autmatically cmpensate fr any fluctuatins in battery vltage variatins t ensure cnsistent flw under all cnditins. The tw knbs n the face f the cntrller dictate at what manifld (bst) pressure minimum fluid injectin starts and at what pressure maximum/full fluid injectin ccurs. Fluid injectin will prgressively increase between these tw pints as set by the adjustment knbs. The Start PSI dial has a range frm 1 psig (full cunterclckwise rtatin) t 11 psig (full clckwise rtatin). The Full PSI dial has a range f 5 psig (full cunterclckwise rtatin) t 35 psig (full clckwise rtatin). It is suggested t adjust the Start PSI value by setting the dial t apprximately 25% f the vehicle's maximum bst. Adjust the full-in value t yur maximum pssible bst. These are nly suggestins; imprper use r setting culd result in engine r vehicle damage please cnsult yur tuner. Status LED The cntrller has an n-bard Status LED. This will mimic the peratin f the external LED. Upn startup the current mde is flashed in green n the status LED. It will flash errr cdes in red as well as illuminate with varying intensity as a functin f flw in green.

17 CONTROLLER 17 Fuse The cntrller has an externally accessible fuse. The cntrller itself will turn n and functin, but the pump will nt run withut the fuse. If the cntrller is reprting an pen circuit it may be that the fuse has blwn r is nt installed crrectly. Use a 15 amp fast blw fuse fr replacement purpses. TEST Buttn The TEST buttn feature is available t test the system's functinality. This feature shuld be used ONLY with the nzzle discnnected frm the engine. This is t prevent unintentinal pumping f fluid int the engine. T perate the TEST buttn, press and hld. The pump speed will gradually increase frm zer t full speed within 3 secnds and then remain at full speed fr anther 3 secnds befre stpping. Flw shuld begin gradually and then hld at full pressure fr a ttal test time f 6 secnds. Shrt Circuit Self-Diagnstics There are tw mdes f pump-driver shrt circuit prtectin available. One can detect a shrt at any time but prduces a slight buzzing in the pump. This shuld nt be nticeable under mst cnditins but can be turned ff if it is bjectinable. If turned ff, a shrt circuit can nly be detected when the pump is running. T enable r disable this diagnstic (and the buzzing): Press and hld the TEST buttn while applying pwer t the cntrller. The change is acknwledged by a single lng flash f the status LED utput and the external LED. Once the buttn is released the cntrller will cntinue t functin nrmally. Yu can als tell what mde has been selected by listening fr the buzzing sund in the pump. Repeating this peratin will tggle between the tw mdes.

18 18 Water/Methanl Injectin V2 A MORE LINEAR FLOW OUTPUT AEM s Water/Methanl Injectin system delivers a linear flw rate as pump speed increases. This is unlike cmpetitrs systems that simply have a linear pump speed drive between start and full setting which results in a nn-linear delivery f water/methanl. AEM s system linearizes the flw, giving yu better flw cntrl and a mre prgressive delivery f water/methanl. BOOST-SAFE OUTPUT (ptinal) The prgressive cntrller includes a Bst-Safe utput (grunded when active) that activates whenever the system is armed and runs ut f fluid r an errr cde is flashing. The green wire n the cntrller is the 1.7 amp switched grund. This wire can be hked up t a slenid that will vent waste gate pressure when activated. Apply 12V t the ther side f the slenid (AEM P/N r equivalent). This utput can als be used t trigger a timing retard functin in a standalne ECU r a CDI whenever the system runs ut f fluid, thus prtecting yur engine. It is highly recmmended that this feature be utilized. SOLENOID DRIVER (ptinal) The prgressive cntrller includes a Slenid utput (Brwn with white strip wire, grunded when active, 1.5A max) that activates whenever the system is pumping. The wire shuld be cnnected t the grund side f a slenid, with the ther end f the slenid cnnected t switched ignitin pwer. The slenid shuld be installed after the pump and befre the nzzle. Fr best results install the slenid clse t the nzzle. NON-PROGRESSIVE OPERATION (ptinal) The prgressive cntrller is capable f perating in a nn-prgressive manner, acting as a full-n r full-ff type system. T set this up the Full PSI knb must be set t a lwer value then the Start PSI knb. This means as sn as the bst exceeds the Start PSI threshld the pump will begin pumping at its maximum flw since it has passed bth the start and the full requirements.

19 ENGINE TUNING NON-PROGRESSIVE OPERATION (ptinal) 19 Water/methanl injectin is generally nt cnsidered a blt-n pwer adder fr frced inductin gasline applicatins. Engine tuning is usually required in rder t maximize ptential pwer gain. Water/methanl injectin allws fr a mre aggressive tune t be used while still using pump gas as yur base fuel. Using a 50/50 mix f water/methanl is recmmended fr the best cmbinatin f air charge cling and detnatin cntrl. With cnservative bst and timing, establish a base AFR that is ne pint higher than yur final target AFR. Fr example, if yur final target AFR with water/methanl injectin is 11.0:1, set yur base AFR t 12.0:1. Once the base AFR has been set, start injecting water/methanl and adjust the injectin flw rate t achieve yur final target AFR. Fr example, if befre injectin yur base AFR is 12.0:1 and then during injectin yur AFR drps t 10.5:1, reduce the water/methanl flw rate until yur final target AFR is reached. It is generally recmmended that the flw rate f the injectin system be changed in rder t reach yur target AFR and NOT yur primary fueling. Injectin flw rate adjustments can be made by changing yur nzzle selectin r by adjusting the Start PSI and Full PSI settings. Once the injectin flw rate is set t deliver yur desired final AFR, bst and ignitin timing can be increased t take advantage f the additinal air charge cling and detnatin cntrl. When injecting the crrect amunt, a 50/50 mix f water/methanl has been shwn t prvide an effective ctane f ver 110 when using a base fuel f ctane pump gas. A prperly tuned water/methanl injectin system will usually supprt a typical race gas engine tune. COLD WEATHER OPERATION A water/methanl mix will als lwer the freezing pint f the fluid. Belw is a chart with freezing pints fr different percentages f water/methanl mixtures. Temperature Methanl Cncentratin % by Vlume 20 F 13 0 F F F 46 MAINTENANCE The injectr nzzle shuld be cleaned peridically. Disassemble the nzzle and clean it with a suitable cleaner until all debris is remved. If excessive cntaminatin is fund, check the rest f the system fr the surce.
