.2 Lifting Work Equipment

Lifting Equipment LOLER Work equipment for lifting or lowering loads and includes its attachments used for anchoring, fixing or supporting it

Cranes Mobile cranes Combined off and on road lifting applications Wide range of sizes and capacities Tower cranes Relatively light loads to extremes of height and reach Overhead cranes Operate over a large linear area Workshops

Cranes Hazards Overturning Weak support Striking obstructions Operating outside capabilities Overloading Collision Failure of load bearing part Loss of load

Controls Cranes Ground capable of bearing load Check underground services and cellars Level ground If not hydraulic stabilisers needed Load bearing capacity is sufficient for the task Correct procedures for erecting / dismantling Positioned so as to avoid collisions Non-essential people are kept clear of work area Not operated in adverse weather Maintain structural integrity of crane Check for corrosion

Lifts and Hoists Transport people and goods Passenger lifts Patient hoists Mobile person hoist Ceiling person hoists Stair lifts Window cleaning cradles

Lifts and Hoists Hoists Gin wheel hoist Pulley wheel and rope suspended from fixed point Hazards Loss of the wheel Loss of load from hook Controls Ensure gin wheel securely fixed Proper hook with safety catch Safe working platform for loading / unloading

Lifts Mechanical or hydraulic Hazards Lifts and Hoists Overturn / collapse Person underneath or near at risk Supporting ropes or mechanism may fail Load may fall Maybe in a high position Persons may become stranded if lift fails Controls Protect with enclosure / guard Gates at landings, electromagnetic interlocks Operate from within lift Trained and competent operators If not for people adequate warning signs Examined every 12 months / 6 months for people and recorded

Scissor lift Hazards Lifts and Hoists Crush injuries if raised too high People or material falling Overload Overturn Collapse Sheer effect when closing Controls Trained and competent Guard at lower scissor mechanism SSOW

Lifts and Hoists Vehicle Inspection lift Hazards Crush when lowering Vehicles rolling off Overload Overturn Collapse Controls Trained and competent Flat, even ground Secure wheels from movement SSOW

MEWP Lifts and Hoists Provide work platform at height Movable under own power or towed Hazards Overhead cables / machinery Injuries to head from pipework / roof beams Falls Collision Controls Trained and competent Guard rails and toe boards Harness and lanyard, hard hat Firm and level ground Tyres properly inflated Area cordoned off SSOW

SWL Safe working load Visibly and clearly marked on all lifting equipment Supplementary information Safe angles of lift People / Not people: Marked as such

Competence HASAWA PUWER Competent person Plan the operation Load handler Attach / detach Authorised person Ensure load safely attached Operator Competent

Selection of Lifting Equipment Correct type for task SWL Correct type and combination of lifting accessories Radius of operation Height of lift Time available Frequency of lifting Stable ground At planning stage

Lifting Accessories Slings Single leg Two legged etc Steel wire Chain Fibre rope

Lifting Accessories Eyebolts For anchor points Dynamo Straight / vertical lifts only Collar Angles and vertical Collar and ring Multi leg lifts

Plate clamp Lifting sheet metal Lifting spreader beam Long loads Case / drum sling Less than 1 tonne Shackles Lifting Accessories Secure sling to load / eyebolt Join 2 slings together Lifting hooks Fitted to lifting appliance or shackles
