4 What is a lifting operation? An operation concerned with the lifting or lowering of a load'. A 'load' is the item or items being lifted, which includes a person or people. 4

The WLL does not account for particular service conditions which may affect the final rating

5 WLL & SWL Working Load Limit (WLL) The maximum load which an item of lifting equipment is designed to raise, lower or suspend. The WLL does not account for particular service conditions which may affect the final rating of the equipment. Safe Working Load (SWL) The maximum load that can be safely lifted by any item of lifting equipment SWL can be lower than the WLL. 5

6 LIFTING EQUIPMENT Lifting Equipment Lifting equipment comprises lifting appliances and lifting accessories. They are defined as follows: Lifting Appliances Any mechanical device capable of raising or lowering a load, eg: Cranes, Forklift Trucks, Manual Hoists, Lever Hoists, Rope Hoists Winches. Lifting Accessories Any device whatsoever which is used or designed to be used directly or indirectly to connect a load to a lifting appliance (see above) and which does not form part of the load, e.g. Wire Rope Slings, Chain Slings, Man-made Fiber Slings, Hooks and Fittings, Swivels, Shackles, Eye-bolts, Rigging Screws.s, Plate Clamps. 6

12 PIN TYPES AND APPLICATIONS ROUND PIN SHACKLES SCREW PIN SHACKLES Round Pin Shackles can be used in tie down, towing, suspension or lifting applications where the load is strictly applied in-line. BOLT-TYPE SHACKLES Screw Pin Shackles can be used in any application where a round pin shackle is used including applications involving side-loading circumstances where reduced working load limits are required. While in service, do not allow the screw pin to be rotated by a live line, such as a choker application. Bolt-type Shackles can be used in any application where a round pin or screw pin shackles are used. In addition, they are recommended for permanent or long term installations and where the load may slide on the shackle pin causing the pin to rotate.

13 Replacement Shackle Pins Can a shackle pin be replaced? Providing the pin and the body do not come from different manufacturers and that the correct type of shackle pin is fitted and that the pin meets the fit requirements specified in EN or the standard to which it was made- then there is no reason to reject a shackle because it has a new pin
