2 Wire Rope s with Single-Rope Legs & Torpedo Loop-Lock Splices Hanes Supply No. 105B Eyes are formed using the flemish eye splice. Ends are secured by pressing a metal sleeve over the ends of the strands of the splice. Pull is directly along the centerline of rope and eye. Gives most efficient use of rope capacity and is economical. Flemish Eye Splice In the standard flemish eye mechanical splice, rope is separated into two parts 3 adjacent strands, and 3 adjacent strands and core. These two parts are then re-laid back in opposite directions to form an eye, and ends are secured with a pressed metal sleeve. Swaging Provides Positive Grip This cutaway of a metal sleeve swaged onto a splice shows how metal flows into valleys between strands to positively prevent ends from unlaying when sling is used within its rated capacity. Most web sling damage starts on the edge and progresses across the face of the webbing. Polymer coated yarns are woven into the edges of Monster-Edge sling webbing to reduce damage and increase its useful life. Monster-Edge is 67% more resistant to edge cutting than standard sling webbing. NOTE: Add an M onto the end of ordering code for Monster-Edge. Tapering - Types 3, 4, and 5 are tapered at 3" and wider unless otherwise ordered. These wider slings are tapered at the bearing points to accommodate a crane hook. Treatment - Unless specifically requested, all nylon web slings will have an abrasion resistant treatment applied. The standard for polyester web slings, however, is without treatment. NOTE: Add a D to the end of Code for Polyester. Polyester webbing is not available over 10" in width. Physical Factors Effecting Strength Your care in the use and handling of slings will prolong sling life significantly. The following physical factors should be considered when using any of the nylon slings mentioned here: Cutting - The number one cause of web sling damage/failure, usually caused by load edge movement against sling. Temperature - Nylon & polyester are seriously degraded at temperatures above194 O F. Improper Loading - Shock loading, unbalanced loading, over loading and inadequate consideration for the effect of angle factors can adversely effect strength. Punctures & Abrasions - These can seriously degrade sling strength. Red core yarns can aid in locating damaged webbing. Foreign Matter - Material such as metal chips, weld spatter, heavy grit, etc. can damage a web sling both internally and externally. Ultraviolet Light - Nylon & polyester web slings are adversely effected by prolonged exposure to UV light, i.e. sunlight or arc welding. s appear bleached and stiff. Effect of Angle SLING ANGLE is the angle measured between a horizontal line and the sling leg or body. This angle is very important and can have a dramatic effect on the rated capacity of the sling. When this angle decreases, the load on each leg increases. This principle applies whether one sling is used to pull at an angle, in a basket hitch or for multi-legged bridle slings. angles of less than 30 O are not recommended. Exposure of the sling to a sharp comer requires a wear pad that is not susceptible to cutting. After isolating the difference in the requirements, it was apparent that our Synthetic Armor Wear Pad was adequate for abrasion protection. A new type of wear pad was developed to improve the protection of the sling when exposed to steel comers, the CornerMax wear pad. The principle behind this invention is the formation of a tunnel between the pad and the edge, greatly reducing the possibility of cutting. If the Tell-Tails do not extend past the tag it may indicate severe overloading and the sling should be returned to the manufacturer for evaluation. A flashlight shone into one optical Tell-Tail will reflect from the other if the core yarns are Intact. If the light does not pass from one Tell-Tail around the inside of the sling and out the other Tell-Tail, remove the sling from service and return it for repair evaluation. Patent Pending.
