1 OCCUPATION SUMMARY: Performs manual labor in the construction, maintenance, repair and cleaning of streets, sewers and water systems, city building and park grounds and lawns, and recreation equipment. Drives trucks equipped with dump body to transport and dump loose materials, such as sand, gravel, or bituminous paving materials. Operates equipment incidental to the work such as mowers, cleaners, sweepers, and chippers and compressors. SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Under the direct supervision of the DPS Supervisor; but may receive direction from the individual building department head. TASK STATEMENTS which may be considered Essential Functions: Drives dump truck or light truck to haul tools, materials and personnel to and from work sites, pulls levers or turns crank to tilt body and dump contents. Shovels asphalt, sand or gravel. Operates an asphalt heater to fill cracks in concrete streets or patch holes and other portions of asphalt surfaces. Operates an air hammer and compressor to cut asphalt and break up concrete in the laying or repairing of water or sewer lines or in making street repairs. Uses hand tools to prepare trenches for laying or repairing storm and sanitary sewer or water lines; maintains grade, tar lines joints and back fills trenches after line work is completed. Uses hand tools and sewer cleaners in cleaning out sewer lines. Inspects vehicles/trucks/equipment as it relates to Commercial Driver s License (CDL) Uses hand tools in cleaning of catch basins, manholes, ditches and culverts. Uses mower, farm tractor and hand tools in mowing of grass and weed cutting on vacant lots, city boulevards, city parks and around city buildings. Revised: 7/12/16 Page 1 of 8
2 Uses sidewalk sweeper and hand equipment in cleaning sidewalks of dirt, snow or ice. Uses brush chipper in grinding limbs trimmed from trees and shrubs on city or residential owned property. Uses hand and power tools and equipment in the layout and upkeep of park facilities, including ball diamonds, soccer fields, picnic areas and facilities, ice arena and buildings. Responds to off-duty calls for emergencies arising in work areas such as broken water mains, sewer main maintenance or heavy snowfalls and/or any other emergencies required. Move hand and foot controls of jerk trucks forward and backward to loosen and dump material adhering to body. Loads trucks by hand or by operating mechanical loader. Strip, neutralize, seal and wax floors on a regular basis, using hand and power tools. Regulates furnace and/or air conditioning systems. Replaces furnace/air conditioner filters. Empties trash garbage and recycled paper containers. Maintains buildings, performing minor and routine painting, plumbing, electrical wiring, and other related maintenance activities, using ladders, hand tools and power tools. Maintains a schedule of checking building equipment and mechanical systems on a regular basis for preventative maintenance purposes. Responsible for security of buildings by opening and closing buildings at appropriate hours. Inspects vehicles/trucks/equipment as it relates to Commercial Driver s License (CDL). Prunes shrubs and trees to shape and improve growth or remove damaged leaves, branches or twigs using shears, pruners or chain saw. Revised: 7/12/16 Page 2 of 8
3 TASK STATEMENTS that may be Marginal Functions: May spray lawns, shrubs, and trees with fertilizer, herbicides and insecticides using hand or automatic sprayer (if one has applicable certification). Performs other related work as assigned. SPECIFICATIONS: 1. Minimum Reasoning ability usually associated with this classification: Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in or from standardized situations. Ability to understand and apply proper MIOSA safety practice standards. 2. Minimum Math ability usually associated with this classification: Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers; to multiply and divide 10 s and 100 s by 2, 3, 4, or 5; to perform the four basic arithmetic operations with coins as part of the dollar; to perform operations with units such as cup, pint and quart, inch, foot, yard, ounce, pound, area, and volume. 3. Minimum Language ability usually associated with this classification. Read: Ability to recognize the meaning of 2,500 (two and three syllable) words; to read at a rate of words per minute; to compare similarities and differences between words and between a series of numbers. Write: Ability to print simple sentences containing subject, verb and object, series of numbers, names and addresses. Amount of training, either on-the-job or formal education, usually associated with this occupation in addition to the Reasoning, Math and Language abilities detailed above: Valid Michigan Driver s License meeting minimum driving requirements; ability to obtain and maintain a Michigan Commercial Driver s License (CDL) within 90 days of hire date. High School diploma or equivalent. One year or more of similar work experiences. Ability to operate a dump truck, light trucks and small equipment. Ability to effectively carry out work assignments according to oral and written instructions and City rules and policies. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, other employees, and city residents. Ability to apply proper safety practices. Ability to work without direct supervision. Ability to work overtime as required. 5. Degree of Physical Demands (Strength) usually associated with the essential functions of this classification: Medium Work: Exerting 50 to 90 pounds of force occasionally, or 20 to 50 pounds of force frequently, or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
