5 From the PRESIDENT.Another month of wonderful events organised by Mary - I am only sorry that since my small accident to myself (importantly the car was unhurt) I was unable to attend many, however am looking forward to this month s events, especially our trip to Kempsey. We have been fortunate enough to have had a donation from the Jaguar Enthusiasts Club of Aust for young driver training, and are going to offer scholarships with the MG Newcastle Car Club for their Driver Development Course. There are more details for this scheme in the HUB (page 8), and if you have children, grandchildren, nieces or nephews up to the age of 25 you would like to be trained under this scheme, please contact Don Anderson who is co-ordinating the scheme with MG Club. Our Presentation Dinner is on Sat 21st November, please book in with Mary Cox before 27th October, we need to know numbers to confirm booking. Remember you can pay by direct debit into the Club s account, in the reference section make sure you put Your Name Pres Dinner so Allan knows who the money is from. Details for payment before 27th October are in the HUB see page 24. Also our New Members Breakfast is on Sat 14th November, details on page 23, please book with Mary, as the Club will be providing the breakfast and we need to know how many sausages and eggs to buy. To our new members Barry and Teresa Price XJ40 Singleton Jeremy Clarkson has a soft spot for Jaguar (being an E Type owner), and you may have noticed his V12 block coffee table on Top Gear. Last Monday he test drove an XF-R 5.0ltr and compared it to a BMW M5, putting them thru their paces on the test track, and came out in favour of the XF-R. Lots of tyre smoke with sideways driving, he seemed to be enjoying himself. Wing Commander Andy Green OBE - the fastest man on earth and the World Land Speed Record Holder drove up Goodwood's famous hill in Jaguar's fastest car ever, the XFR Prototype* that recorded mph on the Bonneville Salt Flats towards the end of last year. Andy Green was the first person to break the sound barrier on land when he recorded mph in the Thrust SSC** in He said: "It is always a thrill to drive at the Festival of Speed and all the more so in a proper race car. I hugely enjoyed the Bonneville Jaguar, and the crowd loved it too this is the sort of car that they come to watch. Now I want to go and drive it at Bonneville!" We look forward to seeing everyone at our next meeting at Singleton and future Club outings, safe and enjoyable driving. The Hub October 2009 Page 5 Ian

7 Club providing the training. Problem Corner: Eddie Wright said that he has a problem with his Series II brakes, after two or three pumps of the pedal it seems as though the vacuum disappears, he has replaced hoses and vacuum valve and put a second hand booster on, it was thought that maybe the diaphragm could be damaged. Denis has solved his problem with his oil filter canister, he took Ian s advice and bought a conversion kit which did solve the problem but in the meantime he found that he had over tightened it and compressed it too much and when held up to the sun had hairline cracks. Ian has bought iridium spark plugs from the states and run them at 60 thou, the car starts easier and revs at 500 revs more. The Raffle prize of NRMA Pack donated by David Snape of NRMA Classic Vehicle Insurance was won by Alistair Crombie with red ticket No, B6. 8 YOUNG DRIVER TRAINING PROGRAM Our Club has been fortunate to have received a donation of $2,000 from the Jaguar Enthusiasts Club Aust, to be used for the express purpose of young driver training. We have decided to award 3 scholarships a year for young drivers to attend the DRIVER DEVELOPMENT COURSE CONDUCTED AT THE RINGWOOD PARK MOTOR SPORT COMPLEX This course is designed for junior drivers from the age of 12 to 18 years old. The course will consist of tutorial on car control, safety and car preparation. Driving instruction is on a one-on-one basis, with instructors approved by the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS). It is preferred that participants have some driving experience (sprint karts, motorkhanas, khanacross) or RTA learners permit. Pupils under 18 years of age will require a parent or guardian to sign the entry form to give permission. A scrutineering (safety check) will be carried out on all training vehicles 30 min before the advertised start. Please make sure your vehicle is in a road worthy and safe condition. Your car can be road registered vehicle, (single seat competition vehicles are not allowed). Safety apparel required is neck to ankle cotton-based clothing with long sleeves. A helmet and flat thin sole shoes are preferred. Drivers of open top sports cars must wear gloves and goggles or a helmet with visor. Cars should also be equipped with a fire extinguisher, bonnet strap & seat belts in good condition. The next course is on SAT November 21st. The JDCHR will provide a scholarship which covers the cost of the course, CAMS L1 licence and fire extinguisher. We will also provide a helmet for the day to use. If you have children, grandchildren, nieces or nephews up to the age of 25 you would like to be trained under this scheme, please events@jaguarhunter.org.au with Name Age Licence No (if they have one) Contact Details Don Anderson is co-ordinating our young driver training program with the MG Car Club and will then notify registrants of details This is a wonderful opportunity for the JDCHR to participate in the development of our young drivers, and we should be proud to be able to help them, which contributes to the saving of maiming or death of our young people. 12 ACJC MEETING Sunday, 16 th AUGUST, 2009 key points Jaguar Australia Jaguar Australia is currently operating profitably whilst Jaguar Cars was profitable during 2007 and the first half 2008 before the effects of the Global Financial Crisis hit. TATA has been able to tell the UK government that no bail-out finance is required as they have been able to fund their ongoing needs. Jaguar is looking to move to a niche market with a higher value premium rather than high volume. X-Type is due to finish in December after a good 8 year run. JA is trying to get as much X-Type stock as possible but there are definitely no more 3L X-Types available. The XJ, which arrives in April 2010, will be a car with high specifications, details of which can be found in a recent JagMag. The new XJ is designed to compete with the Audi A8, Mercedes S Class, BMW 7 Series but the Porsche Panamera and the Maserati Quattroporte are also part of the target market. Through the ebrochure the purchaser can effectively create their own car. The use of virtual instruments, a dual view screen in the front seat with programmes the driver cannot see and voice instructions on a say what you see basis are but some of the features. Wheels will be 255x35 but will provide a good ride due to the sophistication of the suspension. A space saver 18 with an R rating will be the spare. Service intervals will be 24,000 kms for petrol cars and 26,000 for diesel cars. Warranty fixes of Jaguar vehicles continue to drop which is very pleasing. Website. The ACJC website has been updated and is now accessible without the use of a password. It contains the National Rally Manual and can be found at New National Concours Trophies. The Concours d Elegance is the epitome of achievement for Club members and the Council has been concerned that there were not trophies to recognise the effort put in by d Elegance entrants. It has been decided to create six groupings for cars, similar in their design and/or engineering, and to present a perpetual trophy for each. The categories will be: Chassis Based - SS, Mk IV, Mk V, Mk VII, Mk VIII, Mk IX, XK120, XK140, XK150, C-Type, D-Type Monocoque - Mk 1, Mk 2, original S-Type, 420, 420G, Mark 10 and Daimler limousines. 13 New National Concourse Trophies (cont d) Original XJ Series XJ Series 1, 2 and 3, XJC, Daimler variants all including V12 models. Moderns X-Type, modern S-Type, XJ40, X300-X308, X350 and XF 2010 Queensland Rally update. Rally headquarters will be at the Royal Pines Resort on the Gold Coast and with the exception of the Sporting event, the Sunday alternative event and the farewell brunch the entire Rally will be at the resort. The Sporting event will be held at the multi-million dollar Holden Performance Driving Centre whilst the Post Rally Tour will be through the hinterland, back to Brisbane and ending in Northern NSW. Full details and registration is now on the website Canberra Rally Report NR Headquarters will be at the newly refurbished Pavilion on Northbourne Avenue and will celebrate 50 years of the E-Type. The Concours and Display Day will be outside the National Library whilst the Sporting Day will be at the Hill Climb Circuit at Queanbeyan. The Presentation Dinner will be at the upmarket Hyatt Hotel, Monday morning brunch at the National Botanic gardens whilst the PRT is expected to travel through the Snowy, Wagga and Cowra. ACJC Financials The Treasurer presented the Financial Statements for the year ended 30 th June, 2009 which showed a surplus for the year of $3,353. This result is after writing off the judges coats now taken to account and expenses in respect of the trophies. Continued containment of travel and meeting expenses, together with interest income being received for the full year, had contributed to this satisfactory situation. Any need to change the current level of contribution by Clubs is not anticipated. Ian Hissey NEED A MECHANIC? We have all the answers! 14 - a segment featuring Club members and their cars. This month s member(s) - Steve and Robynne Lilly What Jaguar(s) do you currently own? - Signal Red1972 Series III E-Type, and Sapphire 1997 XJ8 What was your first Jaguar? - Dark Blue 1966 Series I E-Type Coupe When did you get your first Jaguar? What is your daily drive? - XJ8 and 1992 Nissan Patrol 4.2D How did you first get interested in Jaguars? - The first Jaguars that I took notice of were a Red XK120 Roadster which belonged to one of my customers on my paper run in Mayfield, when I was about 10 years old. Then a White Mark II which I saw at a youth group night when I was about 14 years old. They struck me as being a real good quality car and was very impressed with the design, style and sound of the car. Any unfulfilled Jaguar wishes? - I m pretty satisfied for now. What kind of driving do you do in your Jaguar(s)? - In the XJ8 we do day to day driving and with the E-Type it is historical plate registered so we do club runs and National Rally s which has given us great driving enjoyment. How much of the work on your Jaguar(s) do you do yourself as opposed to outsourcing - Basically everything that needs being done I do myself, especially the E-Type. The XJ8 hasn t needed any rebuilding as yet but it may need outsourcing as it is much more complicated. What cars or interests appeal to you, other than Jaguars? - I am just fascinated by machinery so motoring in general appeals to me. Best driving experience? - Robynne and I travelling across the Nullarbor in 42 degrees in the E-Type with no air conditioner, just a dish of water on the floor and half a dozen wet tea towels draped over us. We enjoy all the touring we do with our friends from the club. Worst driving experience? - Stuck in traffic at Fremantle Western Australia in 40+ degree heat, pre wet tea towel evaporative cooling system invention (which only works at higher speed anyway). 16 Changing Rings on V12 Engine with Heads Off It is an easy matter to change the rings while the heads are off, without having to remove the block from the car and remove the sump. Liners can also be changed this way if you have a damaged one. Before you remove the liners, use plenty of air to blow out all the crud, scale and deposits in the water chamber around the liners, so absolutely no dirt or foreign matter can drop down into sump! The pistons are then exposed to remove the rings, clean up the pistons and put new rings on. Rotate crankshaft with 7/8 spanner on crankshaft pulley, to bring each piston clear of block Make a Cam wheel holder from sheet metal to hold cam wheels in place while heads are off. The Hub October 2009 Page 16

17 I used a large worm drive hose clip to hold the rings into the piston, not too tight it wont move. The liner has a small chamfer on the leading edge, slip it over the piston, push down till the hose clip is below rings and they are in the liner, then remove hose clip and push liners home. Remember before this to thoroughly clean the seat of the liner and where it sits in the block, and use a good quality sealant, such as Loctite 518 Flange Sealant. Its very straight forward and only takes a few hours to change all 12 ring sets. After all the liners have been replaced, use large washers to hold the liners in place, while rotating crankshaft to set No 01 piston to TDC, and check the accuracy of the TDC mark adjacent to the crankshaft pulley. 33 As we get older we sometimes begin to doubt our ability to "make a difference" in the world. One such person recently said: I've often been asked, What do you old folks do now that you're retired? Well, I'm fortunate to have a chemical engineering background, and one of the things I enjoy most is turning beer, wine, Scotch, and margaritas into urine. A couple of young tourists are pulled over by a highway patrolman. The officer walks up, asks for the driver's license and registration, and when he doesn't get it quickly enough, whacks the driver in the head. "That's for not having your driver's license ready," he snaps. "I ain't got all day." After he issues the driver a ticket, the patrolman walks around to the other side of the car and whacks the passenger in the head. "Owwww!" hollers the passenger. "What'd you do that for?" "That's to make your wish come true," replied the cop. "I knew that when you'd gone half a mile down the road, you were gonna say to your friend here, 'Wish he'd tried that with me!'" With humour like this, it s no wonder the British design cars with a few idiosyncrasies: Last night there was a big fight in our local fish and chip shop - a lot of fish got battered. I used to dress off the peg, but now my neighbours take in their washing at night. Postman: Is this letter for you? The name is smudged. Man: No, it can't be for me, my name is Smith. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson were having a rest in their hotel room when suddenly a tree walked in. "Elm entry, my Dear Watson," said Holmes.
