5 FROM THE PRESIDENT The countdown is on for our JDCHR Hunter Region All British Display Day. All the Clubs have been letting John McAlpine, Grand Marshal for the event, know what cars they are bringing, and this month will finalise these numbers for the final plan l a y - out. This year we have some wonderful attractions. Alistair McIlroy, E Type Envoy, has organised an impressive array of E Types to drool over. Natasha Beyersdorf is our celebrity judge and will present the trophy for... the most desirable and beautiful E Type Jaguar Australia, with our local dealer Hunter Prestige Motor Group, are displaying the mighty XKR, XFR, XF and XJ saloon. John McAlpine has organised a display selection of replica warships doing battle on the Frog Pond. New clubs this year include the Hunter Valley Classic Commercial Vehicle Club displaying a British Double Decker bus (who of the younger generation has seen one of those?), together with all the other magnificent cars & bikes from all the other clubs. Please let John know by Fri 8th July how many of your Jaguar collection you are bringing to display, so we can finalise the layout. This is our biggest event of the year, and is a great day to meet up with enthusiasts from other clubs and admire their cars. What an event the Observation Run was really well organised through magnificent countryside, thank you Don for an enjoyable day, from all those members who came, getting their car undersides cleaned ready for display day was a very thoughtful addition to the program. Mary has a report on the pleasurable long weekend trip to Gloucester, where new members Peter & Lesley Smith joined the Club, and they also came along to our mid week run to Largs pub, settling in to our agreeable company. Our next feast is Xmas in July- who said all we do is meet to eat! We look forward to seeing everyone at our Display Day, future Club outings, and our Club meeting, Ian The HUB July

Ian and Don have spoken to Keith Berriman, who owns one of the two D Type owned in Australia and he said he would bring it to the Display Day if he was reimbursed $500 to cover his costs. Lumley s will be giving the club $1000 sponsorship for the day, so Ian asked for discussion from members about the costing and if they agree with the club spending the money to have the D Type attend. Members voted in favour. Ian reminded members to let the club know of what cars they will be bringing to the Day. Phil McLeod asked if we have organised a PA for the Day and Ruth Calcutt enquired about the Regalia tent. 9 FROM THE EDITOR I know, I know, we haven t had this page previously, but there was a page left over what s an Editor to do? Firstly, thanks you to those members and others who have helped me out greatly by offering ideas for the HUB, which I enjoy putting together each month. Thanks too, to those who have done even better, and contributed articles and reports to add to the magazine. I must also acknowledge the assistance I get from the Committee, especially President Ian Hissey, who keeps me fed with flyers for the various events, and Mary Cox who doubles as photographer and reporter, when I am unable to attend activities myself. This month we have reports on more Club events including Don Anderson s Observation Run, the GEAR day at Wakefield Park, the annual Mid Winter Wander, our weekend in Gloucester and the June Mid Week Run. As well, there s some appetite whetters to get you inspired for the Club s All British Display Day on 30th July. There s also a story by John Moremon about his aspirations for an XK Jaguar, and my own musings about how this aspiration can be satisfied very inexpensively indeed! With the AGM coming up, with the election of office bearers and Committee positions, I am reminded of my own uncertainty when I volunteered to take over as the Club's magazine Editor. But as I suspected, I have derived a great deal out of doing the job, and it hopefully makes a contribution. How many times have you read articles about aging, saying that an important part of wellbeing is to do something that benefits others? So, the message is, don t be hesitant about putting your hand up for a position within the Club, or volunteering to help in some other way. Speaking of meetings, I was reminded when writing my little piece about my XK (Page 34), of the generous sponsors who donate raffle prizes each month. This included Michael Laugesen with the XK model, and on many occasions Nick Coulton with wine packs. And there are many others I can recall over recent times Bill Whitby, Ailsa Wright, Mary & Graeme Cox and others. Thank you to all our donators. Of course, in acknowledging contributions that assist our Club, I ll take the opportunity to thank our advertisers, without the income from whom the HUB would be a shadow of its current self. The larger corporate advertisers have helped us fund the change to colour for the magazine covers, and Lumley of course makes an additional sponsorship for the Display Day which is mentioned elsewhere in this issue. Utilising the services of the advertisers obviously lets them feel that their advertising is worthwhile. You might even save money, as I did recently changing the XJ6 insurance over to Lumley. Until next time I have a page left over... Phil McLeod The HUB July

10 - a segment featuring Club members and their cars This month s member: Harvey Birtwistle When did you join JDCHR? July 2010 What Jaguar do you currently own? My current car is a 1996 XJ6 X300 4L Sport. The paintwork is carnival red with oatmeal interior. This car was originally purchased in Sydney. The second owner then took it to Brisbane, and later traded it in on a later model Jaguar. I purchased it in 2006 from the dealer Ben Cook. As recorded in The HUB earlier, this car has been entered in numerous concourses and competitions since 2000, and most recently in the 2011 National Rally where it won Gold in the Concours d Elegance. What was your first Jaguar? My first Jaguar was a 1972 Series One XJ6, 4.2 litre. It had a British Racing Green exterior with a tan interior. When did you get your first Jaguar? I purchased this car in It had had a pretty hard life, so I got it at a bargain price. Owning it was a good learning curve; not only in getting to know more about Jaguars, but where the money goes The engine was rebuilt (it took forever) the seats recovered, the headlining replaced and new carpet laid and a new exhaust system fitted. The only remaining item on the list was a respray which I didn t get around to. In-between times, it was a great car to drive What is your daily drive? My daily drive is a 2004 Holden Commodore VY Series 11, 25 th Edition. Harvey s award-winning X300 4litre Sport photographed on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin during the 2011 National Rally 10 The HUB July 2011

11 How did you first get interested in Jaguars? A friend of mine bought a Series One 2.8 Litre, and I was so taken in by the style, comfort and overall character of this car that I determined to buy one a 4.2L! Any unfulfilled Jaguar wishes? I wouldn t mind a current model XJ or XF or XK8 or Harvey s first Jag the XJ6 Series litre What kind of driving do you do in your Jaguar? I take my car on Club runs mostly. It rarely sees supermarket carparks. It really comes into its own on the open road. It is the sort of car that encourages you to drive and drive and drive; such is its comfort and performance. Petrol consumption figures are interesting. On the way to Canberra the car s computer system indicated 10L/100 km and on the return (no stop-start or heavy traffic) the consumption indicated 8.6L/100 km. How much of the work on your Jaguar do you do yourself as opposed to outsourcing? I outsource all the mechanical work, but I do all the cosmetic work, which includes preparing it for competitions. Fortunately the car is in really good condition, so before competition it is just a matter of a good wash and polish, and the liberal use of cotton buds in the cleaning process. What cars or interests appeal to you, other than Jaguars? I have always been interested in English cars, usually those I can least afford to buy let alone maintain Along with reading, travelling, moving house and genealogy, my other long time interest is model trains. Some 50 years ago, my father bought my brother and me a Hornby Dublo train set. It consisted of a boxed Bristol Castle and the Mallard, plus some three-rail track and rolling stock. Over the years I have added many trains to my collection. At last count I have 15 trains ranging from the various Duchesses, Bo Bo Diesels to tank locos. In addition, I have a motley collection of carriages both suburban and intercity as well as many goods wagons, TPOs, stations, crossings, over passes, buildings (both domestic and commercial) and loose people (my Mum told me to avoid them Ed), to make the layout more interesting. More recently I have acquired some two-rail track, 10 trains and associated carriages and goods wagons. A bedroom now serves as a train room! The HUB July

12 HARVEY BIRTWISTLE (cont d) Best driving experience? Probably my most rewarding driving experiences have been on overseas roads and highways. I have driven in Canada, USA and extensively through the UK. Probably the best among them was the (coastal) drive on Highway 1 from San Francisco to Los Angeles. The road is good and as you hug the coast the scenery is superb. Places to see include Monterey (Fisherman s Wharf), Carmel, Little Big Sur, San Simeon and The Hearst Castle. Worst driving experience? These two events I well remember, as they are outside of my normal driving experiences. Both in Canada! Cars that lock themselves and unexpected snow On leaving Manning Park, (east of Vancouver) I wanted something out of the boot (trunk?), so I stopped the hirecar, left the motor running and went to the rear of the car. The driver s door slammed shut and locked! Fortunately, I hadn t driven far from the motel so I walked back to get help. The hire car company people said that they would send someone, so I strolled back to the car, only to find the highway police there with lights flashing searching the car and surrounds, guns drawn I had some fast explaining to do, as they thought the worst! As I waited for the car to be unlocked I sat in the police car, a rather intimidating experience surrounded by all the firepower fitted to its interior. All ended well. It was October and the weather was clear supposedly! So, a day or so later, when driving to Jasper from Banff on the Icefields Parkway, which passes by the Athabasca Glacier, it started to snow. Lightly at first, then down it came reducing visibility to almost zero. Things looked grim. I couldn t turn. All I could see was snow building up around me and on the windscreen. Then out of nowhere a snowplough appeared, obviously looking for stranded drivers. He indicated follow me which I gratefully did along with a number of other cars queued up behind me. As we had descended to a lower level the snow disappeared; the weather cleared and I continued on my journey an anxious experience not to be repeated in a hurry! Follow me! 12 The HUB July 2011

14 Readers will be aware by now of the Club s All British Display Day, to be held on the Newcastle Foreshore on Saturday 30th July This is the Club s biggest day of the year, and this year, our third Display Day, promises to be the best yet. These pages give you some idea about hat s in store. This popular NBN news presenter will be our guest of honour and has an important role in this year s event. Hailing from Armidale, Natasha now calls Newcastle home and has been welcomed into most Novocastrians lounge rooms with dinner time news for the last 8 years. Natasha has enjoyed an exciting career as a media professional, in roles including radio and television journalism, news presenting, news editing, producing, public relations and marketing. This busy mother of two and wife to fellow media personality Brett Lavaring, also finds time to invest in some of Newcastle s very worthy charities and recently developed an important series on mental health issues for NBN. Natasha has agreed to be the celebrity judge at our JDCHR Hunter Region All British Display Day. The judging will be based on her decision of the most desirable and beautiful E Type and could also be influenced by which car offers her the best photograph or ride! Natasha will then present the trophies. There is more on this vehicle later in the magazine. But as a result of some work by President Ian Hissey and Don Anderson, and thanks to our generous sponsorship from Lumley Special Vehicles Insurance, this very special car will be on display, as part of a group showcasing the extensive racing heritage of Jaguar. It is believed to be one of only two original D Types in Australia. Keith Berriman is from Cootamundra, and we are indeed fortunate to see this car in Newcastle. D Types won at Le Mans in 1955, 1956 and With luck, the D type will be joined by a unique Lister Jaguar owned by Barry Bates, depending on its repair schedule (it recently suffered body damage). 15 Display Day Grand Marshall John McAlpine has succeeded in attracting a unique display to add a maritime element to the event. The Hunter Valley Battle Group will be staging one of their battles on the Frog Pond during the day. The Hunter Valley Battle Group (HVBG) came about in 2008 when a group of like minded people decided to form a local squadron of the Australian Battle Group. This is a hobby where scale model warships manoeuvre, attack and sink each other. The hobby has been operating in the USA for more than 30 years now. The warships attack or defend merchant ship convoys. Each ship is equipped with low-powered CO2 (carbon dioxide) propelled cannons firing ball bearings for attack and thin balsa for defence. Each vessel is also equipped with a bilge pump to help it stay afloat. The ships are built to withstand sinking. When the ships are recovered and patched (using tissue paper and dope), they are soon ready to fight again. The scale is 1:144 (1 inch = 12 feet), with ships from the period 1901 to 1946 eligible to battle. Speeds are proportional (timed over 100 feet) and there is no reverse allowed in combat. Most ships are built from a fibreglass hull which provides a very strong frame capable of taking the punishment of combat. Ships must generally close to 10 feet (3 metres) for the cannon fire to penetrate an enemy's balsa skin. Information from: Eventually, as more and more holes are punched, the ship's bilge pump will not be able to keep up and the vessel will sink. Sunken ships deploy floats so that they can be located and recovered. huntervalleybattlegroup.webs.com/ aboutourhobby.htm We look forward to watching these men and their vessels in action on the Frog Pond, and seeing a different hobby, where they repair things so they can go out and destroy them! 16 Why do they establish a great little racing circuit in one of the coldest parts of NSW? Why is one of the most interesting historic racing car events held at that circuit in the middle of winter? These are two of the questions that seemed to creep into my mind several times during the day on 8 th June 2011, when I accompanied Ian Hissey and Don Anderson to the Golden Era of Auto Racing (GEAR) Club s meeting at Wakefield Park, outside Goulburn. There s no other way to look at it it was bloody cold! But what a great day! Just to see such a collection of iconic and valuable historic racing cars would be itself worth the hardship of the weather. But to be able to walk amongst them in the pits, talk to their owners, and then see them being motored enthusiastically around a circuit where they once raced in earnest, was a special spectacle. Ian and I decided to limit our hardship by going to Goulburn the previous afternoon and staying overnight. That was a good choice, as the cold weather descended during the night and delivered a maximum temperature of about 4 degrees C during the next day. With the high wind blowing in from the Snowy Mountains, the wind chill brought that down to at times, less than zero. Ian's XJ-SC found the temperature no more to its liking than we did, requiring a bit extra encouragement to come to life in the freezing conditions. We breakfasted at the Paragon Cafe in the main street. This is a wonderful place to eat clean, efficient and friendly, with great food and good hot coffee. I d been there before and it never disappoints. Almost worth diverting off the motorway just to pay the Paragon a visit! Then on to the circuit, where we parked with other visiting Jaguars, whose owners had been enticed by the fact that Jaguar was the featured marque of the day. We met Don who had braved an early start and travelled down from Newcastle that morning. Will Sanderson s and Martin Branden s C Type Jaguars in their trackside garage 16 No sooner were we out of the car, than we were wandering in the garages where enthusiasts were already preparing their various cars for the day s activities. And what cars! Several Jaguar C Type replicas, a single genuine and original D Type in immaculate condition, various British makes such as early MG s, Austin Healeys, an Aston Martin, and others. The drivers, kitted out like us with a mixture of beanies, balaclavas, gloves and goggles, made a interesting collection in themselves. I couldn t imagine their discomfort when hurtling down the straight at serious speed in an open sports car, in that weather! The HUB July 2011 Ian Hissey s XJ-SC tucked up tight (and cold) at the motel in Goulburn

17 The calibre of these cars set this day apart from the average. The D Type, for example, was absolutely immaculate, and some idea of its value can be gauged by the sale in the US, in January 2010, of a similar car for US$3.74 million! Below: D Type jaguar sold at Gooding & Co s auction in January 2010 Above: Keith Berriman s immaculate genuine original D Type Jaguar From the GEAR website The day consisted of the entrants cars doing demonstration circuits in close company, but not racing, of course. They are divided into classes, and one group is being assembled on the dummy grid while the previous class is out on the circuit, so there s always something happening; always something to look at; always something to listen to, as the sound of these cars in full flight is magnificent. At lunchtime, while the entrants got fed at the very presentable on site cafe, others such as ourselves, were able to join a safe procession around the course, at suitable speed, with no overtaking allowed. Great fun just the same. What a great day out don t miss it next time! From its inception when it was formed out of what had been known as The Country Gentlemen's Car Club, GEAR has set out to preserve, and see exercised the older historic racing and racing sports Cars. The emphasis is not so much on driving, than on having a good time on the track with your mates. The format is run along the lines of a regularity event and the idea is that you drive with your friends not against them, although if you were to stand on the mound at Wakefield Park and watch an event, you would think they are driving for sheep stations. The truth is the prize is a bag of lollies. At the end of the day we all get together for some light refreshments and some good food and of course tell the most enormous tales of how you almost beat the bloke next to you. by Phil McLeod Our current eligibility criterion is for Racing, Sports Racing and Production Sports cars to early 1960,s. GEAR runs 6 meetings a year and also runs The Goulburn Bowl event, which commemorates the running of the first Australian GP held at what was then the showground and now the racecourse. The HUB July

32 John Moremon tells us how he selected his next car, on a trip to UK: After spending two weeks in Lausanne, Switzerland on an industrial tribunal matter as an expert witness, I needed to undertake a pilgrimage to the United Kingdom to find the house where my father was born about a century ago. I have never been to the UK before but as another company was flying me business class to Switzerland via London, I took a week stopover to begin my search. I did the usual day trip on the top deck of a double-decker bus with the roof chopped off, camera in front of face taking photos of all the places which you had heard of years before as you beat you sisters at playing monopoly. I wonder if the yanks have a similar board game based on New York? These English were a blood-thirsty lot, as I was told about the hanging tree in London where 60 people would be hung at a time; big day out for the Londoners in years gone-by! As a bit of trivia: when the unfortunate souls were taken by wagon from the gaol to the hanging tree, they were offered a last drink to steady their nerves for the encounter that lay in front of them. They were taken off the wagon for this last drink, which founded the saying of One For The Road (last drink). If you didn t drink you would remain on the wagon, which in turn established the saying of You re On The Wagon or didn t drink - sounds fair to me. Anyway, back at my 4 star B&B, which I had found on the net, (I think it was the number of points on the star not the number of stars) I opened up the lap-top and via Wotif, chose accommodation in Plymouth, Devon at per night. This one I got right, as they weren t bad digs. The mansion was names Kitley House and was built somewhere between 1457 and 1509 during the reign of Henry Vll. Sarah Catherine Martin lived in this house and whilst there wrote the poem in 1804 of Old Mother Hubbard. Old Mother Hubbard was actually the resident housekeeper whose cupboard is located in the basement area where the housekeeper had her sitting room. The cupboard is still there and no, there still aren t any bones in it. I had trained it from Heathrow to Plymouth which was about 4 hours and spent most of the way with my nose glued to the window looking at all the new scenery, like canal boats and locks and wonderful country homes. After a sleep in my room at this mansion, which by the way, is not like my own bedroom, as the rooms are strange with timber bits sticking out everywhere, I ordered a taxi to transport me to Plymouth Town to find dad s home. 32 The HUB July 2011

33 Taxi (London type) turned up and asked where I would like to go and I said 8 Parr Street and the instant reply was, with the Eagle Pub on the corner. Within fifteen minutes I was standing in front of the house where my father was born in 1919, cobble stoned street and all. The house was very close to the water and I guess that was because of my grandfather s heritage he was a seafarer. I knocked on the front door and waited a while, but nobody was home; not that I knew what I was going to say if somebody came to the door anyway! I walked towards the water and went into a marina and there I found my next car. Fancy leaving this car out in the rain! I m now saving for my own piece of luxury, which will cost about twice as much as the one pictured here, thanks to our import duty and government taxes. The one pictured, being an XKR, looks to be a 2007 or later model and these are bringing $150,000 plus here at home. I wonder if she would notice if one turned up in the garage? I could ask Santa, and try and be good for the rest of the year, or I might try the old saying that it s easier to ask for forgiveness than permission. by John Moremon The HUB July

34 Like most people who are interested in Jaguars, my senses have always been inspired by the designation XK. So far, as close as I can get is the XK engine in my XJ6, but of course, my imagination is always stirred by thoughts of any of the XK cars from the earliest XK120 s, 140 s and especially the XK150. The latest in the line, the XK s and XKR s are of course, another object of aspiration, they just look so good! John Moremon (Pages 32) had to take a trip to England before he could decide he wanted an XKR, whereas I ve always done that. How fortunate then, that my raffle ticket was drawn out of the barrel at the May Club meeting, and I went home with a model XK. It was a raffle donation by member Michael Laugersen. Thank you Michael, from the Club, and from me! It wasn t complete of course like a lot of Jaguars that people end up with, it was in bits. A box full of bits for me to put together. However, this proved to be no kid s toy with a whole stack of plastic trees with numerous parts requiring painting. Mine was a Welly brand, 1:24 scale, with the body manufactured to a very high standard from diecast metal, and pre-painted in British Racing Green! The interior parts are in fact made from plastic, but again pre-painted. As a result, the assembly didn t take long, and presto! I have my very own XK, and I didn t even have to leave Newcastle! More importantly, mine cost the $2 for the raffle ticket, not John Moremon s eye-watering $150,000 estimate (Page 33). So here she is! Right: Nearly t h e r e d r o p the body on, three screws (screwdriver supplied) and it s done by Phil McLeod Above: Body trim in place, dash fitted Below: And there it is the poor man s XK 34 The HUB July 2011

36 Don Anderson organised another of his very popular Observation Runs in June. The date had to be postponed one week due to torrential rain. He felt that the route may be affected by local rises in river levels in the upper Hunter valley, and he was right! The postponement prevented the Editor from participating, but those who attended have reported another very enjoyable day. Here s the story. Report and pictures by Mary Cox: On Saturday the 25 th June there were 15 cars participating in the Observation Run, which was organized by Don Anderson. We gathered at Maitland Park at 8.30am onwards, to receive our instructions and listen to a talk by Don before departing at 9.00am. On leaving the park we drove to the corner of Aberglasslyn Road and followed the road to the ford, where the water was just under the bridge from the flooding the week before. We travelled on Above: Wendy Modinger, Paul Melville Ford Barnett, Margaret Holt, Lesley & Road then Maitland Vale Road Peter Smith awaiting the start to Lambs Valley and on to Stanhope and Branxton. We drove along the New England Highway to the Golden Highway, and on to Jerrys Plains for morning tea at the Recreation Park. A great display of cars parked at the entrance in great weather conditions. Above: Eddie Wright, Roger Holt, Bill Whitby and Graeme Cox After morning tea around 11.30am, we drove back onto the highway to Lemington Road and stopped at the public viewing point, to look at Hunter Valley Rio Tinto Mine and see its operations. Don did a talk about this mine and other surrounding mines that could be seen in the distance. On leaving at 12.00pm, we proceeded down Lemington Road to the New England Highway and turned towards Singleton. At Camberwell we turned off the Highway and drove out Left: Kellie McInnes, Steve Lilly, Ailsa Wright and Robynne Lilly 36 The HUB July 2011

37 through the back of Goorangoola and came back on Bridgman Road to Singleton. We arrived at the Central Hotel Singleton, for lunch at 12.45pm, which was enjoyed by all in attendance. Don gathered the paperwork, and calculated the placegetters for the day. The winners for the day were Alan and Ruth Calcutt, with runners up John Moremon and Steve and Robynne Lilly. Congratulations to them all. Thanks to Don who organised the day which everybody enjoyed very much. Don plotted the route and navigation instructions, with the assistance of Mary and Graeme Cox. 40 I can remember the old saying, regularly told to me in my moments of exasperation, If all else fails, read the instructions!. So, when I wanted to re-fit the rear window switches in my Series 2 XJ6, my first step was to consult the official Jaguar workshop manual. The switches had popped up out of the backing plate and I couldn t get them to snap back into place. First step according to the manual, after disconnecting the battery, is to Lever mounting panel from centre console. Working carefully with a screwdriver under the edge of the mounting panel, I began to do that. First one, then three more popping sounds were evident, before the panel came away. These noises proved to be small aluminium studs attached to the underside of the mounting panel, securing the panel to a steel locating plate under the console, breaking away. They had parted company with the mounting panel! Inspection then revealed that these studs are secured by small grip-washers to the locating plate. Faced with this unexpected development, I investigated a little deeper, and discovered that the rear portion of the console where the switch assembly is located, is removable by undoing two large screws. With the console section removed, switches disconnected (having noted the position of the ten wires for re-connection later), I could work on the bench. Having broken the aluminium studs attached to the underside of the mounting panel, I had to use two small metal thread screws/nuts for re-assembly, which regrettably are now visible, unlike the original. That is annoying, given that if the manual had told me to remove the console section at the start, the grip washers could perhaps have been removed without breaking the aluminium studs. Oh well, I ll know next time! Metal thread screws Console securing screws The completed job with two extra screw heads now visible By the way, the reason the switches were not sitting neatly in the backing plate in the first place was that the wires were incorrectly oriented on the back of the switches, so that they were not accommodated in the tight space between the console and the transmission tunnel. Never trust the manual without thinking! The rear section of the console that can be removed to reveal all! by Phil McLeod 40 The HUB July 2011

42 Some six Jaguars set out from Club Macquarie for the June Mid Week Run on 29th June. These runs have seen increasing popularity, and no-one was keener on this occasion than Mary Cox, attending her first Mid Week Run as a woman of leisure after her recent retirement. We were also pleased to see new members Peter & Lesley Smith on their first Mid Week Run. Our destination on this occasion was the Largs Hotel, which has earned a great reputation as a good place to eat in recent years. And so it was. One interesting car that did not accompany us on the run was a gleaming black brand new Jaguar XF diesel owned by non-member Errol who turned up at Club Macquarie. Evidently a great car with plenty of grunt, and a beautiful engine that we couldn t see because, like all modern engines, it s covered by a big plastic shroud. Before we got to Largs, we had to have a good drive, of course. We navigated our way Above: The convoy gathers at Club Macquarie through the suburbs to Sandgate, then across Kooragang island to Finnan Park on Grahamstown Lake, for morning tea. Naturally, it rained as we crossed Kooragang, with its coal loaders and coal dust, thus ensuring that all the cars would need a proper wash before the Display Day in a month s time. With the addition of Harvey Birtwistle and Steve Lilly who met us at Finnan Park, our convoy by now comprised: Ian & Jan Hissey XJ-SC Bill Whitby S Type Phil McLeod XJ6 S2 Peter & Lesley Smith X type Peter Dwyer XJ6 S1 Harvey Birtwistle X300 Steve & Robynne Lilly E Type S3 Graeme & Mary Cox X300 V12 The run from Grahamstown to Largs via Seaham and Woodville, was very pleasant (and dry) drive through picturesque Lower Hunter rural countryside perfect Jaguar country. Ian s GPS kept him guessing, and the rest of us doing U-turns, but it all adds to the interest. A 21st century model may find its way under Ian s Christmas tree this year! There were many small rural properties in this area that the ladies admired for their extensive gardens, and still more that the men coveted for their great big sheds! Right: The convoy re-assembled at Finnan Park 42 The HUB July 2011

43 The Largs Pub was a great lunch spot parking out the back, a good dining area called the Bushranger Bar & Brasserie and, best of all, a $9.99 Seniors Special which provided a variety of hearty choices including roasts. Alas, nobody got asked to show their Seniors Card unfortunately the waitress seemed to know! After a suitable interlude of friendly and good humoured chat over food and refreshments, we headed home after another successful Mid Week Run organised by Ian Hissey. Thanks again Ian. Just beyond the sign, unmistakably, is Largs Public School. Established in 1838 it is the oldest public school in NSW. Within the grounds (it is around the corner in John Street) is The Largs Bush School, an early colonial slab hut which contains historical documents. It is open to the public during the school year by arrangement, tel: (02) The sign outside reads: 'This slab hut was built originally as a tenant farmers home sometime in the 1830s when the land was part of the Dunmore Lang estate. It stood about 100 metres south east of its present position and was lived in continuously until the 1940s. The town stands on what was originally part of the Lang family's Dunmore grant. George Lang, the original grantee, died in 1825 after getting no further than building a slab hut. Another brother, Andrew, along with his parents, William and Mary, farmed the property, adding a flour mill and various buildings. Andrew's brother, the Reverend John Dunmore Lang, apparently laid claim to the property in the late 1830s but through the auspices of his mother abandoned his efforts. Reverend Lang encouraged the immigration of 120 poor islanders from the west coast of Scotland in Unhappy with their initial allotment on flood-prone land near Morpeth, Andrew offered them clearing leases on the land which is now Largs. He also built the school which doubled as a house of worship. The village became known as both Dunmore and Largs, the latter after a district in Ayrshire, Scotland. The HUB July

58 An Italian teenage boy goes to confession: Bless me Father, for I have sinned. I have been with a loose girl'. The priest asks, 'Is that you, little Joey Pagano?. 'Yes, Father, it is.' 'And who was the girl you were with?' 'I can't tell you, Father. I don't want to ruin her reputation'. The priest ups the ante: Well, Joey, I'm sure to find out her name sooner or later so you may as well tell me now. Was it Tina Minetti?. 'I cannot say.' 'Was it Teresa Mazzarelli?' 'I'll never tell.' 'Was it Nina Capelli?' 'I'm sorry, but I cannot name her.' 'Was it Cathy Piriano?' 'My lips are sealed.' 'Was it Rosa DiAngelo, then?' 'Please, Father, I cannot tell you.' The priest sighs in frustration. 'You're very tight lipped, and I admire that. But you've sinned and have to atone. You cannot be an altar boy now for 4 months. Now you go and behave yourself.' Joey walks back to his pew, and his friend Franco slides over and whispers, 'What'd you get?' 'Four months vacation and five good leads.' The world s first Ride-on mower! Is your sunroof leaking? Try this! Customer: "This car you sold me is useless" Salesman: "What's wrong with it?" Customer: "Within a week of me buying it, one of the doors fell off, all the lights failed, the exhaust dropped off, and the steering wheel came off in my hands. I thought you said the car had one careful owner?" Salesman: "So I did. But the second owner wasn't quite so careful..." Five English guys are in an Audi Quattro, and are trying to get through to Ireland on the ferry. An Irishman at the dock stops them and says "Oi" you can't come through here with five people in a Quattro. Quattro means four and you're five!" The driver says "Don't be stupid, Quattro refers to the drive train; it's a four wheel drive hence Quattro" "I'm sorry" says paddy, "Quattro is four, and you can't come here with five people!!" "Bugger that, where's your manager?" says the driver. "He's busy! He is trying to sort out a couple in a Fiat Uno!!" 58 The HUB July 2011
