1 Inspection 1. Inspect timing belt teeth for breaks, cracks or wear. Inspect belt for signs of oil contamination. When inspecting timing belt, do not bend less than a radius of 2.36" (6.0 mm). Replace belt if any fault is present. 2. Inspect automatic belt tension adjuster oil seal for leaks. Slight trace of oil at adjuster rod oil seal does not indicate a problem. Inspect adjuster rod end for abnormal wear and scratches. 3. Measure extension of adjuster rod beyond tensioner body. Holding tensioner with adjuster rod facing up, adjuster rod extension should be " ( mm). See Fig. 10. Replace automatic timing belt tensioner assembly if adjuster rod extension is not as specified. CAUTION: DO NOT use a bench vise to compress adjuster rod. Always use a vertical type pressing tool to compress adjuster rod. It should take more than 3 minutes to compress adjuster rod. 4. Place automatic belt tension adjuster assembly in a press with adjuster rod facing up. Apply 66 lbs. (30 kg) of pressure on rod. If adjuster rod moves down easily, replace automatic timing belt tensioner assembly. 5. Inspect automatic belt tension adjuster and idler pulleys for abnormal surface wear, oil leakage, rough rotation, noise and excessive play. Replace if any fault is present. Intake and exhaust camshafts for this DOHC engine can be independently rotated with timing belt removed. As can be seen from figure, if intake and exhaust valves are lifted simultaneously, their heads will interfere with each other, resulting in bent valves. See Fig When timing belts are not installed, four camshafts are held at "Zero Lift" position, where all cams on camshafts do not push the intake and exhaust valves down. Under this condition, all valves remain unlifted. 3. When camshafts are rotated to install the timing belts, No. 2 intake and No. 4 exhaust cam of left-hand camshafts are held to push their corresponding valves down. Under this condition, these valves are held lifted. Right-side camshafts are held so that their cams do not push valves down. 4. Left-hand camshafts must be rotated from "Zero Lift" position where timing belt is to be installed at as small an angle as possible, in order to prevent mutual interference of intake and exhaust valve heads. 5. Do not allow camshafts to rotate in direction shown in figure, as this causes both intake and exhaust valves to lift simultaneously, resulting in interference with their heads. See Fig. 12.
