1 Caravan Service Bulletin July 20, 2010 TITLE RIGHT INBOARD FLAP BELL CRANK BEARING INSPECTION / REPLACEMENT EFFECTIVITY The airplanes that follow that have had part number S Bearing(s) installed in the right inboard flap bell crank assembly that were shipped from Cessna Parts Distribution on August 8, 2007 through December 3, 2008: Model Serial Numbers thru B 208B0001 thru 208B2070 Also affected are any part number S Bearings in Service Station stock that were shipped from Cessna Parts Distribution on August 8, 2007 through December 3, PURPOSE It has been determined that some airplanes can have replacement bearings installed in the right inboard flap bell crank that were not manufactured correctly. The chrome balls in the bearing may crack, which can potentially degrade the performance of the bearing. The affected right inboard flap bell crank bearings that are installed shall be replaced as described in this Service Bulletin. NOTE: Until compliance with this Service Bulletin, if the intended runway is not of sufficient length to accomplish a flaps up landing, the pilot must do flight planning to include an alternate runway of sufficient length so that in the event of a flap system failure, a flaps up landing can be accomplished. COMPLIANCE Mandatory: shall be accomplished within the next 400 hours of operation or 12 months, whichever occurs first. 2 MAN-HOURS Man-hours are based on the work being accomplished during a scheduled inspection. If necessary, 2.3 man-hours for replacement of the flap bell crank bearings. MATERIAL The parts that follow are available from Cessna Parts Distribution through an appropriate Cessna Service Station. Review the airplane logbook entries to see if the right inboard flap bell crank bearing(s) have been replaced with parts that were shipped from Cessna Parts Distribution on August 8, 2007 through December 3, A. If the bearing(s) have not been replaced, no further action is necessary. Go to Step 13. B. If the bearing(s) have been replaced with parts that were shipped from Cessna Parts Distribution on August 8, 2007 through December 3, 2008, go to Step Prepare the airplane for maintenance. A. Electrically ground the airplane. B. Make sure that all switches are in the OFF/NORM position. C. Disconnect electrical power from the airplane. (1) Disconnect external electrical power. (2) Disconnect the airplane battery. D. Attach maintenance warning tags to the battery and external power receptacle that have "DO NOT CONNECT ELECTRICAL POWER - MAINTENANCE IN PROGRESS" writtenonthem. 3. Remove access panel 611AB from the right wing. (Refer to the Model 208 Maintenance Manual, Chapter 6, Access Plates and Panels Identification - Description and Operation.) 4. Remove the sealant from the bolt for the flap bell crank on the top of the right wing. WARNING: Use support for the flap before you fully remove the bell crank. If you do not use support for the flap, it will fall to its travel limit when you disconnect it from the bell crank. 5. (Refer to Figure 1, Detail A.) Remove and keep the inboard forward flap bell crank assembly. Keep the bolts and washers. Discard the nuts and the cotter pin. (Refer to the Model 208 Maintenance Manual, Chapter 27, Flap System - Maintenance Practices.) 6. (Refer to Figure 1, Detail A.) Replace the right inboard flap bell crank bearings as follows: A. Remove the two bearings from the flap bell crank anddiscardthem. Youcanusetheprocedure that follows to remove the bearings: (Refer to the Model 208 Maintenance Manual, Chapter 20, Bearings - Removal/Installation.) CAUTION: Becarefultodonodamagetothebellcrankortheinnertubeduringthe removal of the bearings from the flap bell crank. (1) With a brass punch or a socket of sufficient diameter and a ball peen hammer, tap on the inner race only of the S Bearing at one end of the bell crank until the bearing on the other end of the bell crank begins to move out of the bell crank. The inner tube is now free to move from side to side inside the outer tube. (2) Push on the inner tube to fully remove the bearing from the bell crank. (3) Remove the inner tube and push the remaining bearing out of the bell crank. B. Install two new S Bearings in the flap bell crank. (Refer to the Model 208 Maintenance Manual, Chapter 20, Bearings - Removal/Installation.) 7. Install the flap bell crank with the kept bolts and washers, MS Nut, MS Cotter Pin, and three MS21042L4 Nuts. (Refer to the Model 208 Maintenance Manual, Chapter 27, Flap System - Maintenance Practices.) 8. Apply U Sealant as a fillet seal around the bolt head. 9. Do a touch up of the paint as necessary. 4 10. Remove maintenance warning tags and connect the airplane battery. 11. Doanoperational check of the flap system to make sure that the bell crank moves smoothly through the full range of travel. 12. Install access panel 611AB. (Refer to the Model 208 Maintenance Manual, Chapter 6, Access Plates and Panels Identification - Description and Operation.) 13. Make an entry in the airplane logbook that states compliance and method of compliance with this Service Bulletin. NOTE: This information shall be considered an amendment to the Cessna Manufacturer's Service/Maintenance Manual or Instructions for Continued Airworthiness and must be accomplished for ongoing airworthiness compliance in accordance with 14 CFR Part Page 4 July 20, 2010

7 CREDIT The following parts and labor allowance credit will only apply after you find that a part number S replacement bearing has been installed that was shipped from Cessna Parts Distribution on August 8, 2007 through December 3, Applicable parts credit and a labor allowance credit of 2.3 man-hours per airplane will be provided to replace the right inboard flap bell crank bearings. Freight will be credited at the most economical method unless pre-approved by Cessna. For pre-approval contact Cessna Parts Distribution Warranty Administration at Telephone: , Fax: or cpd2claims@cessna.textron.com. To receive credit, the work must be completed and a Warranty Claim submitted by a Cessna Caravan or Propjet Service Station within 30 calendar days of Service Bulletin compliance before the credit expiration dates shown below. NOTE: A copy of the logbook entry or entries that shows installation of the affected bearings shall be included with the Warranty Claim. Domestic... July 20, 2011 International... 8 OWNER NOTIFICATION On July 20, 2010 the following Owner Advisory message will be sent to applicable owners of record in CAB10-06A. Dear Cessna Owner: This Owner Advisory is to inform you that Service Bulletin CAB10-06 Right Inboard Flap Bell Crank Bearing Inspection / Replacement has been issued. It has been determined that some airplanes can have replacement bearings installed in the right inboard flap bell crank that were not manufactured correctly. The chrome balls in the bearing may crack, which can potentially degrade the performance of the bearing. The affected right inboard flap bell crank bearings that are installed shall be replaced as described in CAB NOTE: Until compliance with CAB10-06, if the intended runway is not of sufficient length to accomplish a flaps up landing, the pilot must do flight planning to include an alternate runway of sufficient length so that in the event of a flap system failure, a flaps up landing can be accomplished.
