1 TITLE LIGHTS - LED TAIL POSITION LIGHT INSTALLATION EFFECTIVITY MODEL UNIT NUMBERS 500 (Citation) thru with SB incorporated 500 (Citation I) thru with SB incorporated, and thru REASON To replace the incandescent bulb light with an LED technology lamp for increased service life. DESCRIPTION This service bulletin provides parts and instructions to install an LED tail position light. COMPLIANCE OPTIONAL. This service bulletin may be accomplished at the discretion of the owner. A service bulletin published by Cessna Aircraft Company may be recorded as completed in an aircraft log only when the following requirements are satisfied: 1) The mechanic must complete all of the instructions in the service bulletin, including the intent therein. 2) The mechanic must correctly use and install all applicable parts supplied with the service bulletin kit. Only with written authorization from Cessna Aircraft Company can substitute parts or rebuilt parts be used to replace new parts. 3) The mechanic or airplane owner must use the technical data in the service bulletin only as approved and published. 4) The mechanic or airplane owner must apply the information in the service bulletin only to aircraft serial numbers identified in the Effectivity section of the bulletin. 5) The mechanic or airplane owner must use maintenance practices that are identified as acceptable standard practices in the aviation industry and governmental regulations. No individual or corporate organization other than Cessna Aircraft Company is authorized to make or apply any changes to a Cessna-issued service bulletin, service letter, or flight manual supplement without prior written consent from Cessna Aircraft Company. Prepare the airplane for maintenance. A. Make sure that all switches are in the OFF/NORM position. B. Disconnect electrical power from the airplane. (1) Disconnect the airplane battery. (2) Disconnect external electrical power. C. Attach maintenance warning tags to the battery and external power receptacle that have "DO NOT CONNECT ELECTRICAL POWER - MAINTENANCE IN PROGRESS" writtenonthem. 2. Disengage the NAV circuit breaker on the left circuit breaker panel. 3. Remove the stinger assembly. (Refer to the Maintenance Manual, Chapter 53, Stinger Assembly - Maintenance Practices.) 4. Remove the Cap Assembly from the stinger. Keep the screws. (Refer to the Maintenance Manual, Chapter 53, Stinger Assembly - Maintenance Practices.) 5. Remove and discard the tail light assembly from the cap assembly and disconnect all of the tail light wires. (Refer to the Maintenance Manual, Chapter 33, Navigation Lights - Maintenance Practices.) A. (Refer to Figure 2, Sheet 3.) Remove and discard the optional tail strobe light if it is installed. Install Caps on the wires as shown. NOTE: You will have one of two different strobe tail light P135 bundle configurations. B. (Refer to Figure 1, Detail D, View A-A and F-F.) Install a Bracket to the stinger with two MS20426AD3-5 Rivets, if it is not already installed. (Refer to the Maintenance Manual, Chapter 53, Stinger Assembly - Maintenance Practices.) 6. (Refer to Figure 1, View B-B.) Remove and discard the MS21069L08 and MS21073L08 Nutplates that are installed on the cap assembly. (Refer to the Maintenance Manual, Chapter 33, Navigation Lights - Maintenance Practices.) 7. (Refer to Figure 1, View A-A.) Remove and discard the three MS21047L06 Nutplates that are installed on the aft left inner surface of the stinger assembly. A. Fill the six rivet holes where the three nutplates were installed on the stinger. (1) Make the three holes in the stinger flat and smooth where they are dimpled. (a) Countersink each hole as necessary for the six MS20426B3-4 Rivet installation. NOTE: Make the new rivets flush on both sides of the stinger skin and stinger doubler. (2) Install six CM3827AD3-3 Rivets. Page 3

4 8. Install one Light Doubler in the cap assembly. A. Put the Light Doubler in the cap assembly so the left side of the light doubler is flush against the cap assembly and flush against the aft end of the cap assembly. (1) (Refer to Figure 1, Detail B.) Put one Adapter Plate on the cap assembly as shown and use temporary sheetmetal fasteners to hold the light doubler and adapter plate to the cap assembly. (a) (b) (c) Make sure the adapter plate is aligned to the upper and lower holes in the cap assembly surface where the lower MS21069L08 and upper MS21073L08 Nutplates where removed. Make sure the forward end of the Light Doubler is flushtoandsquarewith the left forward inside surface of the cap assembly. Use temporary sheetmetal fasteners to hold the forward end of the Light Doubler in place. (2) (Refer to Figure 1, Detail B.) Use the Adapter Plate as a template to match drill two inch-diameter holes through the Light Doubler. (3) (Refer to Figure 1, Detail B.) Use the Adapter Plate as a template to match drill two inch-diameter holes through the Light Doubler. (4) Deburr the drilled holes. (5) Install temporary sheetmetal fasteners through the inch-diameter holes in the adapter plate, cap assembly, and the light doubler to hold the Light Doubler in place. (6) Remove the temporary sheetmetal fasteners installed on the forward end of the Light Doubler. (7) Put the cap assembly on the stringer with the forward edge of the light doubler behind the stinger. (8) Hold the cap assembly in the correct installed position on the stinger. (9) (Refer to Figure 1, Detail B.) Use the three fastener holes on the forward left side of the cap assembly as a template to put marks on the light doubler for nutplate hole locations. (10) (Refer to Figure 1, Detail C.) Remove the cap assembly from the stinger. (11) Remove the temporary sheetmetal fasteners from the aft end of the cap assembly that hold the Adapter Plate and Light Doubler to the cap assembly. (12) Remove the Light Doubler from the cap assembly. (13) (Refer to Figure 1, Detail C.) Drill three inch-diameter holes through the Light Doubler in the marked locations. (14) Deburr the drilled holes. B. (Refer to Figure 1, View A-A, and Detail C.) Install three MS21047L06 Nutplates on the inner left forward end of the Light Doubler centered over each of the three inch-diameter holes. (1) Drill six Number 40 (0.098-inch-diameter) holes through the Light Doubler for the three MS21047L06 Nutplate rivet installations. (a) (b) Countersink the Number 40 (0.098-inch-diameter) holes in the light doubler 100 x inch-diameter. Deburr the drilled holes. (2) Install the three nutplates to the light doubler with six CM3827AD3-3 Rivets. Page 4

5 C. Attach the Light Doubler to the cap assembly. (1) (Refer to Figure 1, View B-B.) Install one MS21069L08 Nutplate (lower) and one MS21073L08 Nutplate (upper) on the Light Doubler where you drilled the inch-diameter holes as shown. (a) (b) (c) (d) Drill four Number 40 (0.098-inch-diameter) holes through the cap assembly and the Light Doubler, two holes for the lower MS21069L08 Nutplate and two holes for the upper MS21073L08 Nutplate. Deburr the four drilled holes in the cap assembly. Countersink the Number 40 (0.098-inch-diameter) holes in the light doubler 100 x inch-diameter. Install the nutplates to the light doubler and cap assembly with four MS20426AD3-4A Rivets as shown. (2) (Refer to Figure 1, View B-B.) Install two MS21069L04 Nutplates on the Light Doubler where you drilled the inch-diameter holes as shown. (a) (b) (c) (d) (e) Drill four Number 40 (0.098-inch-diameter) holes through the Light Doubler for the two MS21069L04 Nutplate installations. Deburr the four drilled holes in the cap assembly. Countersink the Number 40 (0.098-inch-diameter) holes in the light doubler 100 x inch-diameter. Install the nutplates to the light doubler with four CM3827AD3-3 Rivets as shown. Remove the temporary sheetmetal fasteners from the forward end of the cap assembly. D. Install the Light Doubler to the inside of the cap assembly with conductive adhesive. (1) (Refer to Figure 1, Detail C.) Install one Adapter Plate to the cap assembly with two MS Screws in the light doubler MS21069L08 and MS21073L08 Nutplates. (a) Make sure the three MS21047L06 Nutplates on the inner left forward end of the Light Doubler are aligned with the cap assembly and stinger holes. (2) Trace the Light Doubler outline to the left inside surface of the cap assembly with a permanent black fine tipped marker. (3) Move the light doubler away from the cap assembly and clean the left inside surface with isopropyl alcohol where you traced the light doubler outline against the surface of the cap assembly. (4) Apply (K003010S) Conductive Adhesive to the cap assembly in the area you traced, and to the Light Doubler that you put against the surface of the cap assembly. (Refer to the Maintenance Manual, Chapter 20, Standard Practices - Adhesives and Solvent Bonding-Maintenance Practices.) (a) (Refer to Figure 1, Sheet 1, View A-A.) Make sure there is a Type VI electrical bond between the tail light MS Screws and the cap assembly MS21047L06 Screws, and an airplane ground on the tailcone stinger. (Refer to the Maintenance Manual, Chapter 20, Electrical Bonding - Maintenance Practices.) E. (Refer to Figure 1, Detail A and C, View C-C, D-D, and E-E.) Remove the lens cover from the tail light and Install the Tail Light Assembly to the Adapter Plate with two MS Screws. (1) Make the cutout in the cap assembly larger as necessary for a correct fit. 6 (2) (RefertoFigure1,ViewC-C,D-DandE-E.)Makesurethelightisinstalledwiththedrain slots at the bottom. NOTE: (Refer to Figure 1, View D-D.) The tail light assembly base has the word TOP stamped on it. F. (Refer to Figure 1, Detail C.) Put the cap assembly on the stinger and install all of the attaching screws but do not tighten the screws completely. G. Make sure light doubler attaching screws that attach the light doubler to the forward left side of the cap assembly are aligned. H. Adjust the cap assembly to the stinger installation as necessary for a good fit. I. Remove the cap assembly from the stinger and keep the attaching screws. J. (Refer to Figure 1, View A-A.) Apply Pro Seal 890 B-1/2 Sealant around the periphery of the Tail Light Assembly base. (Refer to the Maintenance Manual, Chapter 20, Standard Practices - Airframe.) K. Make sure drain slots are open. L. Paint the Adapter Plate to match the airplane finish. (Refer to the Maintenance Manual, Chapter 20, Exterior Finish - Cleaning/Painting.) M. Connect the taillight ground termination to the Bracket in the stinger. N. (Refer to Figure 2, Sheets 1 and 2.) Install the wiring as shown. (Refer to the Wiring Diagram Manual, Chapter 20, Wiring - Maintenance Practices, Splices, Terminals, and Electrical Connectors Sections.) NOTE: Use the wiring diagram that is for your airplanes serial number. (1) Install the wire identification sleeves to the new wires as shown. 9. (Refer to Figure 1, View A-A, and Detail C.) Install the Tail Light Assembly lens cover with the tail light lens screws. 10. Attach the cap assembly to the stinger with the screws that you kept. (Refer to the Maintenance Manual, Chapter 53, Tailcone Stinger - Maintenance Practices.) 11. Install the stinger assembly. (Refer to the Maintenance Manual, Chapter 53, Stinger Assembly - Maintenance Practices.) 12. Engage the NAV circuit breaker located on the left circuit breaker panel. 13. Connect external electrical power to the airplane. 14. Do a test of the navigation lights. (Refer to the Maintenance Manual, Chapter 33, Navigation Lights - Maintenance Practices.) 15. Remove maintenance warning tags and external electrical power. 16. Connect the airplane battery. 17. Record that this service bulletin has been completed. A. Complete a Maintenance Transaction Report. B. Put a copy of the completed Maintenance Transaction Report in the airplane logbook. C.
