CINCINNATI AUTO REPLICAS is about to enter into its 32 nd year and I am sure it will be another great one thanks to all of the wonderful members. Let us all pitch in and ensure it will be so. JRW FROM THE EDITOR by Mike Jinkens 2016 was a banner year for truck kits. Not only did Moebius finally get their Ford F-100 kits out, but Revell gave us a first generation Bronco kit too. This is one I ve been wanting for years. MPC brought back their 1980 s era GMC 4x4 short bed and Revell reissued their 64 Chevy as well. The long out of production Tyrone Malone Kenworth Super Boss drag truck its hauler the Papa truck have been brought back by AMT. These were highly collectible at one time and are now affordable for anyone wishing to build one or use parts from. Another AMT classic, the 53 Ford F-100, also landed on the shelves complete with retro box art. Since the first theme this year is Pick-ups and Trucks, there seems to be a great selection out there. 4 IN THE GARAGE: KIT REVIEW MONOGRAM EAGER BEAVER ARMY TRUCK KIT # /35 SCALE 73 pieces molded in green, black vinyl and 1 sheet of clear acetate The truck was designed by REO in 1949 and began to enter US service in the early 1950 s as the M-34/M-35. This was a replacement for the GMC built trucks, the M-135, which had been in service since The GMC truck had been an updated version of the truck which was used during WWII. I couldn t find a reason why the GMC trucks were be replaced by these REO models, but the M-34 had a short US service life due to the 6 wheeled lay-out, but the ten wheeled version, the M-35, would stay active into current times. The M-34 was pretty much phased out by the early 1970 s. All were gasoline powered, usually by a REO 331ci Gold Comet six. Continental and Hercules engines would be used as well. Not only REO, but Kaiser-Jeep, AM General, Studebaker and GMC all built the M-34 and the M-35. These trucks were 6x6 drive and had a load rating of 2 ½ tons which gave them the nickname Duece and a half. The Eager Beaver name came from the trucks ability to ford creeks and rivers. The M-35 would have various engines including a multi-fuel unit which could burn gasoline, diesel, kerosene and anything that had an alcohol base. This kit is an old one, the original release was back in This is the 6 wheeled M-34. I have built this kit several times through the years. It is a simple kit and goes together quite well. The current version has minimal flash but has quite a few knock-out and sink marks marring the plastic. The vinyl tires are much better than the ones I remember and could easily find their way to a 1/25 scale Jeep or other 4x4. There are also 6 figures which are very basic and really not correct for the era of this truck. The build starts with cutting the acetate to size for the windshield and back glass, there is a template on the instruction sheet for these. I waited until everything was painted before inserting the clear panes. The chassis is a one piece with lower engine and exhaust molded in. The drive train is a single piece but the rear suspension needs to be glued to it. The cab assembly is made up of 10 pieces plus the steering wheel and gearshift. Monogram provided raised tabs for the glue and makes for a very good joint. The body has seven main pieces including a tarp which can be removed. Painting is simple olive drab, ideally a dark shade. The instructions show field green being used on the truck s wooden bed rails and seats and black for the chassis. I don t know if the black is right, but the bed should be all the same color. Of course there are a few places requiring detail painting such as the head and tail lamps. Decals consist of the usual white stars and truck markings typical of US army vehicles of the 1950 s. Just a simple fun kit to build.

5 Surplus military trucks often find their way to the civilian market. Often times these 6x6 trucks are used by fire departments for brush fires and severe off road use. Here are a few examples. The blue and white truck has been converted into a crane. It appears to have a different cab, but has the M-34 nose. The red one is fire department tanker the yellow one is another tanker, both appear to be M-35 s. The army has a habit of leaving vehicles behind after a war. There are two reasons behind this. One, the country is war torn and needs trucks to rebuild. Two, it is cheaper to leave behind several hundred trucks than ship them all back to the US. That last one made since after WWII because of the sheer number of trucks involved plus those trucks were built quite cheaply.the M-34 was last used in the Viet Nam war, and many were left behind.
