2 From the Editors Desk Circle Track is such a broad theme, and one that includes most everyone. Not only do you have the typical NASCAR and IRL racing series, but you also have dirt track racers, Lemans, SCCA, go carts, CART, Formula 1, GT Touring, and many more that I cannot even think of right now. Sure, some of those series are not a perfect circle, but bring them anyway and put Curtiss to work. The Prez Sez. Greetings Model Citizens! The biggest piece of news to report this month is that the West Chester Convention Center, the venue we have used for numerous CINCINNATI CHALLENGES, has doubled its price! A price in excess of $2600 means we will have to secure another venue for CC17. All of us on the CHALLENGE COMMITTEE are confident that we will find a place. We have a growing list of possible venues that we are pursuing. The club model display at Newport on the Levee was a success. I thank all of the members who brought their models. We had a pleasant time conversing with each other and the folks who came by to check out our cars, trucks and motorcycles. I have, again, weathered the storm of computer meltdown and am back up and running at full cyber rpm s. I am amazed at how hard it was to go a week without this machine. I look forward to seeing you all at the Sept. meeting, til then, happy modeling! 3 Kit Review-2010 Ford Mustang GT Last October at the Toledo NNL, I felt a presence, one that I feel when I am on a Pony Run or Ford Cruise In. I was aware of Mustang models around me, but this was different, and new. As I looked up and down the aisles, admiring the models, I finally found what was tripping my senses. The new 2010 Ford Mustang GT. OK, this Jedi-esque intro was anticlimactic to a few of you, but if you are like me, it was like finding a pot of gold, oddly the test model was painted gold (see picture). In recent years, Revell has really made strides and improved the overall construction and build quality of their models, rivaling Tamiya in many aspects and using a better quality plastic in doing it. This kit is no exception. From the moment you open the instruction page, you find that 2 pages are devoted to a parts list and the name, first time I have ever seen such a thing. The instructions are also very clear. The model builds stock, with the options coming out in the decal sheet. Choices of stripes, different colored gauges (a Ford factory option) and license plates are truly the only options. If you choose not to use the stripping, there is a rear deck lid blackout panel available. Also note that this is the first model I have seen with a factory dash navigation system (decal provided). In my opinion, truly a magnificent model. Wisely, Revell has already come out with a modified reissue of this kit in the form of the Shelby GT500, but more on that later. PROGRESS REPORT July and August have been busy for me with two of my Step-Daughters getting married, company from down South, work, chores, and life in general.

I've managed to find time to work on model projects, and thought I'd pass a good tip along that I got from Clay Kemp. I was having a very difficult time fabricating roll cages.

4 PROGRESS REPORT July and August have been busy for me with two of my Step-Daughters getting married, company from down South, work, chores, and life in general. My model bench is cleared off enough that I can work on something, but it'll never be considered for the America s most organized model room award. LOL! I've managed to find time to work on model projects, and thought I'd pass a good tip along that I got from Clay Kemp. I was having a very difficult time fabricating roll cages. The bending, fish mouthing, and lengths weren't a problem, it was getting the glue joints to hold. Turns out, it was the adhesive I was using was the culprit. Clay told me to try PLASTRUCT PLASTIC WELD. It's formulated for styrene tubing. I tried it, and that stuff works great. It makes a strong bond and welds the joints into one another. I'd use super glue for most every other aspect of model building, and Crafter's Pick water based super glue for windows. I'm on Facebook. It's a great place to connect with people, find old friends, classmates, and for the model-builder, modeling groups! There are quite a few out there that you might be interested in. There's a group called Models and Dioramas, Plasticators Model Car Club (PMCC), and one of my favorites, Facebook Straightliners. There's a wealth of information to be found in those groups, and they have group builds. One that's got me motivated to finish up a few projects is the Ford Gasser build-off. Got a few projects that I've written about and it's about time I got in "GIT-ERDONE" mode. With that said, I'll leave you with a few pictures for motivation. See you at the meeting. 5 The weekend of August was very busy down in Newport. On Saturday your club was asked to feature a display on the Levee, and on Sunday the boys from BPMG hosted a NNL style model car gathering on Monmouth St. No word from BPMG how their NNL went, but on Saturday CAR s display was a great success. We talked to many people, passed out a bunch of fliers, enjoyed some of the shops and restaurants in the levee area, and had a great time. Building Better Models

6 Over the past several months we have been looking at ways to build better model cars. When we left off last, we had starting to talk about painting. Recently I have been asked how do I get such a flat and smooth surface on my models, and how do you make them shine. To be honest, I do not think that I am an authority on the subject, so if anyone else has tips to give. But I will share my tips now. Some key things to remember is that the paint needs to be dry and hard before the sanding I also like to put at least three coats of paint on the model starting with a light thin coat and getting progressively thicker with each coat. Careful not to go too thick, thick paint equals paint runs. Inspect each coat after it sufficiently dry. Lightly sand away any anomalies in the paint such as dust or hair, or anything else that will disturb the final surface. Once the final coat is applied and no buggers appear in the paint, apply your clear coat. Again start off with light coats and finish with a much thicker one. If you paint starts to crack or bubble, you could be using to different types of paint, or grease or other foreign material is on the surface of the model. When this occurs, wait for it to dry, sand or strip the area, clean and smooth, and start again. Once you have a surface you like, let the model sit for a period of time. I like to let the model sit for a month or so. You model should be somewhat shiny with plenty of orange peel on the surface. After the surface is completely dry and hard, the sanding and polishing can begin. Starting with a 3200 grit sanding paper or paper, dip it in water and lightly sand. Apply more water as needed and clean your area as needed. Do not sand to deep, you will remove most of the paint and damage the finish. Repeat the process using 3600, 4000, 6000, 8000, and grit films. You should start gradually see a finish appear. Complete by using a polish, Novice Plastic Polish work well. Start with grade 3 and work your way to number 1. Don t worry if the edges start to wear the paint away, you can go back later and touch it up. Touching up simply involves a little paint, a really small brush or toothpick. Simply spray a little paint in the cap, I prefer to use a toothpick and gently go along the edges where the paint has worn away. This has been successful for me, and I invite you to do the same. This is similar to what detailers use in professional body and detail shops. The sanding process works well to remove glue globs on plastic windows as well. Again, this is not a perfect system, and I am sure other can do better, so I invite someone to send me their tips. That way we can all Build Better Models.
