8 Lighting technologies what you should know! LED technology long design life of up to 60,000 hours with constant lighting performance. The latest LED developments in the headlamp field are already so advanced that they outperform xenon lights. Additionally, LEDs offer high colour temperatures of around 6000 Kelvin, thus guaranteeing illumination just like daylight. Working in lighting conditions is gentle on your eyesight, and it helps you to stay fit for longer. Benefits of LED headlamps High light output Low power consumption Maintenance-free Extremely long service life Multivolt capable 100% dust and waterproof High vibration resistance Low temperature at the lens Do you know the actual light output of your worklight? LED vendors typically state the light output without considering the temperature influence in their product catalogues. But these illumination values do not reflect the effective light output of a ready-for-use worklight. If these light values are applied to a complete device, they often suggest an unrealistically high lighting performance. These values are known as "calculated Lumen" (clm) or as "cold Lumen". The Lumen specifications of all HELLA worklights are always based on values determined during photometric measurements. They thus correspond to the light that effectively leaves the headlight. HELLA LED worklights achieve their full lighting performance up to 50 C ambient temperature. At HELLA, we put all the benefits of modern LED lighting technology to best possible use in our headlamps. The choice of LEDs, their current supply and the headlight s thermal management are important factors for achieving optimum light output (Lumen). The quality of the components used by Hella ensures, for example, that the light output is constantly bright even at higher ambient temperatures. Good thermal management is essential to being able to guarantee a long design life and thus the economy of an LED headlamp. The reason: as soon as an LED starts to emit light, heat is generated. The more power you feed to the system, the more heat is generated in the LED. Lighting performance and design life drop, the higher the LED temperature becomes. In other words, it is important to dissipate the heat into the environment. HELLA thus deploys state-of-art simulation programs in product development, thus ensuring optimum heat dissipation through the housing design. Interference with electronic devices is ruled out at HELLA. Due to the increasing use of electronics on vehicles, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) plays an increasingly important role. Devices with electronics must be designed so as to avoid interference (radiation) of other electrical devices, installations or systems, and that they are not affected by interference themselves (insolation). In Europe, products can only be distributed if they comply with the EMC directive 2004/108/EC. Manufacturers of worklights must declare a product's conformity by means of a CE mark on the product. HELLA takes this one step further and additionally demonstrates the fulfillment of EMC by means of "E" approval in line with ECE regulation 10. This approval guarantees the interference-free function of the device with the vehicle electric system, thus making the device perfectly suited for use in any vehicle group. In addition to this, LED worklights from HELLA, for example, are equipped with thermal sensors that reliably protect LEDs against overheating. This is the only way to achieve an extremely

The highest EMC requirement level is met throughout. This means that interference by the worklight with radios and other electronic devices is conclusively ruled out.. HELLA worklights use H3 filament bulbs with a light colour of 2500 Kelvin. Additionally, there are halogen versions with HB3 and H9 bulbs. Notes on the installation of xenon worklights To allow the ballast on the xenon lamp to ignite safely, the line resistance between the vehicle's battery and the xenon ballast must be no more than 150 mω at 12 V, and no more than 300 mω at 24 V. In order to ensure optimum service life of the xenon lamp, the worklight mounting angle must be no more than ± 35.

10 More design freedom from LEDs The use of LEDs gives design engineers much greater design freedom. Ergonomic aspects can be implemented more easily. Diverse technical options from LEDs. Depending on the product or customer requirements, HELLA installs LEDs in different optical lighting systems. 11 10 11 LED indicators and the patented failure check Legal requirement in all ECE states The indicators on vehicles registered for use on public roads must be monitored. An indicator failure must be communicated to the driver visually or acoustically. This applies in all ECE states. A potential failure of the indicator must therefore be monitored by the vehicle. Manufacturers use different control methods for this purpose. However, the failure controls in use today cannot detect simple LED lights and display an error when they are used. All HELLA LED indicators have integrated electronics for failure control. The indicators monitor themselves. They generate an impulse that is evaluated by the electronic ballast. This ballast simulates a 21W bulb which means it can be used with conventional indicators. Safe conversion to LED indicators is now possible using patented HELLA electronics HELLA supplies electronic ballasts for all HELLA LED indicators which makes it possible to convert the indicator failure display for various vehicles. This is necessary if the vehicle manufacturer does not guarantee direction indicator bulb failure checking via the vehicle's electrical system. The method is patented by HELLA. There are currently three different ballasts and several different LED indicators available. If just a single LED fails, the light is faulty and the pulse is no longer generated. In this case, the ballast switches off bulb simulation and the indicator reports the fault to the driver. LED-light failure check and correct electrical connection Operation of the LED light with AC voltage or synchronised DC voltage is not permitted. The individual light functions may only be operated with a vehicle fuse of max. 3 A. Due to the low watt output of LED lights, which are distinctly different from a bulb version, problems can arise in bulb failure control when operating traction vehicles. As the indicator check is required by law, we recommend operating the light only in conjunction with the indicator control unit, HELLA part no. 5DS Furthermore, some traction vehicles detect other light functions. This represents a vehicle comfort function that is not required by law and does not exempt the driver from their obligation to visually inspect the lighting equipment. Even in this case, low outputs can lead to misdiagnoses (instrument panel in the cab shows a light failure even though it is working fine). Should misdiagnoses occur, as described above, while operating your traction vehicle, please contact the traction vehicle manufacturer.

This is achieved by defining quality criteria throughout the entire manufacturing process and performing in-depth checks using carefully selected methods. Production quality is ensured by parallel quality monitoring and testing.

13 12 13 Quality tests HEAT, COLD AND VIBRATION TEST In temperature cycle tests, HELLA worklights are exposed to temperature fluctuations of -40 degrees Celsius to + 90 degrees Celsius in climatic chambers. For vibration tests, the temperature fluctuates between 30 degrees and 80 degrees Celsius, while the headlamps are shaken for hours and exposed to forces of 9.6 G. These tests are pure stress for any material. But only devices that come through all the tests without any damage make it into serial production. Test reports are archived at HELLA for a period of 15 years. SPLASH WATER TEST In universal splash water cabins, HELLA worklights are tested under realistic environmental conditions. The cabins are equipped with devices for rain, splash water, water jets and water mist. The test products are exposed in water cycle and spray water tests with a pressure of up to 5 bar and in the water jet test to a pressure of up to 10 bar to check their tightness.

14 QUALITY TESTS PRESSURE CLEANER TEST In one test system, the worklights are exposed to a water pressure of up to 100 bar and a water temperature of +80 degrees Celsius. This test simulates cleaning in a carwash or with a pressure cleaner. IMMERSION AND PRESSURE TIGHTNESS TEST In this test, the headlamps are immersed to a depth of 1 meter for 30 minutes in a submerged pipe. No water is allowed to penetrate into the device. This test is performed for all LED worklights. DUST TEST In this test, the products are tested for their dust tightness. Unfired Portland cement is used as a test medium for all products. The test is optionally performed in sample function operation, and with overpressure or underpressure exposure of the device under test. The tests are evaluated by determining the photometric value before and after the test.

15 14 15 HAZARDOUS GOODS ORDINANCE GGVSEB (previously GGVS) means hazardous goods ordinance, roads, railyways and inland waterways. This ordinance implements the European Parliament and Council Directive 2008 / 68 / EC from 24th September 2008 on inland transport of hazardous goods. Worklights with this mark are approved for installation on conveyances that must comply with the provisions of GGVSEB / ADR. IP PROTECTION CLASSES - ASSURANCE FOR PURCHASERS How well is a product protected against environmental influences? Worklights are exposed to dust and water, for example. The IP protection class states how resilient the product is. The classes are determined by DIN Part 9. HELLA worklights are designed for various protection classes: Protection class IP 5K4K Dust may only penetrate to such an extent that function and safety are not impaired. Water that is sprayed from every direction at increased pressure against the housing must not have any damaging effect: water pressure approx. 4 bar. Protection class IP 5K9K Dust may only penetrate to such an extent that function and safety are not impaired. Water that is directed against the housing during high-pressure/steam-jet cleaning must not have any damaging effect; water pressure approx. 100 bar. Protection class IP 6K4K Dust must not penetrate. Water that is splashed against the enclosure at increased pressure from any direction must not have any harmful effect; water pressure approx. 4 bar. Protection class IP 67 Dust must not penetrate. No water may penetrate, even if the device is submersed for some time. Protection class IP 6K9K Dust must not penetrate. Water that is directed against the housing during high-pressure/steam-jet cleaning must not have any damaging effect; water pressure approx. 100 bar. 31 30 31 DynaView Evo2 A new lighting era DynaView Evo2 combines the cornering light and fog light safety functions in compact round auxiliary lights, which can be universally installed in many different vehicles. When the low beam is switched on, the right or left cornering light is activated automatically and immediately when the indicator is actuated or when the vehicle drives round a bend at a speed of less than 40 km/h. A yaw rate sensor measures the vehicle's angular acceleration and triggers the turn-on signal when the car drives through a curve. At the end of the curve, a dimmer softly fades the extra light. If the reverse gear is engaged, both cornering lights are switched on and ensure broad and bright illumination of the areas along the left and right of the vehicle. The cornering light is switched off during normal driving situations on a straight stretch of road. When turning a corner or driving slowly through a curve (up to a speed of 40 km/h), the cornering light is turned on automatically. When driving round a bend up to a speed of 40 km/h, the respective headlight is switched on automatically. By supplementing the circuit with appropriate components, it can be protected, so that the service life is extended and failures are prevented. Polarity reversal protection Even if the connecting cable is connected the wrong way round, there is still no danger for the electronics. The semiconductor in an LED must always be operated with the correct polarity. Inverse polarity damages the LED, so that LED lamps are always equipped with a reverse polarity protection (diode). This function only works when "+" and "-" are correctly connected, however. If a lamp has a bi-polar circuit, the functioning is independent of the contact connections. This ensures Poka-yoke (avoiding faulty installations) in connection with the indentation clamping technology, for instance. However, the additional components on the PCB also increase the costs. Automotive Electronic Council Components qualified according to automotive standard. Electronic components (LEDs, diodes, etc.) are more robust and safer than electronic components for industry due to automotive specifications By using certified suppliers, a more robust design of the circuit is possible - even for longer periods- with consistent quality. Savings of up to 90 % are possible, thus helping to reduce CO 2. Vehicle electrical system voltage Defines the power supply for the lamp. This can be 12 V, 24 V or a flexible voltage range for Multivolt (8 33 V). Multi-voltage is most flexible: Requires fewer versions, but has more electronic circuit components and thus a higher price. IP protection class International Protection (IP) as per DIN Part 9. Specific definition for road vehicles. 5K = Dust protected 6K = Dust tight 9K = Protection against water during pressure / steam cleaning. The higher the protection class, the better the protection against penetrating media. IP 6K9K maximum value Completely sealed against dust and water. Direction Indicator failure check as per ECE R 48 Regulation as per ECE R 48: The driver must be informed of a failure of the direction indicator function on the vehicle. To remain legally compliant, this requirement must also be fulfilled for LED lights. This requirement is fulfilled by means of an integrated selfdiagnostic unit on the LED PCB and an electrical pulse. Shorter LED design life in case of failure. No EMC approval required. Thermal Management Active Passive Active: Electronic power control of the LED in case of impermissibly high ambient temperatures. This ensures the protection of the LED against destruction by overheating. Passive: Optimized layout of the components for even temperature distribution and spread. Active: More development overhead with active thermal management and higher parts prices ensure optimal conditions for maximum design life. Passive: The warmer the LED gets through exterior factors or heating caused by its own operation, the shorter the service life. ECE R 65 ECE R65 +8 Defies the lighting values, light distribution and colour location of beacons. Only beacons that fulfil ECE-R65 can be used on public roads. -8
