Introduction Legal requirement in all ECE states In the case of vehicles approved for use on public roads, the indicators must be monitored: The failure of an indicator must be shown optically or acoustically in the vehicle. This applies in all ECE states. In other words, the potential failure of the indicator must be monitored by the vehicle. Manufacturers use various failure check systems for this. The failure checks currently in use cannot detect simple lights and indicate a fault. All Hella indicators have integrated electronics for the failure check. The indicators are self-monitoring. They generate an impulse that is evaluated by the electronic ballast. This ballast simulates a 21 W bulb, which makes operation with conventional flasher units possible. As soon as one single fails, the light can be considered faulty, the impulse is not generated. The ballast then switches the bulb simulation off and the flasher unit indicates the fault to the driver. light failure check and correct electrical connection Operation of the light with AC voltage or synchronised direct current is not permitted! light failure check On account of the low Watt power of lights, which distinguishes them significantly from filament bulb versions, there can be problems with the bulb failure check during operation on various traction vehicles. Since indicator failure checks are required by legislation, we recommend only operating the light in combination with an indicator control unit, Hella part no. 5DS In addition, further lighting functions are detected by some traction vehicles. This is a vehicle comfort function which is not required by legislation and does not release drivers from their obligation to see for themselves that the lighting equipment is working. Here, too, faulty diagnoses can be a result of the low power levels involved (instrument panel in the driver cab indicates a light failure although the function is working). If faulty diagnoses such as the one described above occur during operation of your traction vehicle type, please contact the traction vehicle manufacturer. The individual light functions may only be operated with a vehicle fuse of max. 3 A. 5

Description of failure indication: Is a defective light indicated when the ignition is turned on or immediately when the defect occurs or when the bulb is removed but without setting the indicator? 8 Technical description of WORKLIGHTS Lighting engineering has undergone dramatic changes in the past few years as s have increased in capacity. s are now also used for headlights and worklights, as well as for other kinds of lights. Hella was one of the first manufacturers to launch the advantages of onto the market through mature technical solutions. Thanks to intensive research and development, Hella is already in a position to replace Xenon by worklights1). The long service life of the s means that Hella worklights are absolutely maintenance-free after installation. 2) 1) The lumen values listed for Hella worklights correspond to the light that effectively leaves the headlight. Thus these specifications correspond to the measurement values. 2) Service life specifications for Hella worklights do not refer solely to the service life of the, but rather to the system function. Thermal Management The long service life of the can only be achieved through good thermal management. Hella uses state-of-the-art simulation programs even at the development stage to help optimise the design in terms of heat dissipation. In addition, all headlights are fitted with a thermal sensor that reduces power supply in the event of overheating. This is the only way all the advantages of can be exploited throughout the service life. 8

9 Light output and light colour Introduction worklights already provide light output at Xenon level. The colour temperature of around 6000 Kelvin is very similar to daylight. This makes perception much easier for the human eye and prevents people becoming tired quickly. This makes more efficient working in the dark possible. 17 Worklights XENON The use of xenon worklights brings clear advantages compared with the use of halogen worklights: 2.5 times the luminous flux, and thus brighter and wider illumination of the working area (compared with H3 bulb). Approx. 35% less power consumption. Illumination similar to daylight for natural colour reproduction even at night. No sudden light failure impact-resistant light arc rather than a sensitive bulb filament. Service life up to five times longer than that of a halogen bulb reduced expenditure for bulb replacement. Constant brightness even if there is a drop in on-board voltage. Lower load on the vehicle wiring system thanks to the power consumption of only 42 W. Since it is very costly to supply the required power, there is a noticeable trend towards very low control currents which still need to be reliably switched.
