3 2 THE PRODUCT SCOPE The product is a lamp system consisting of a short arc burner in a reflector, and a lamp driver. 4 3.3 Ignition Cold ignition The criterion for reliable ignition is defined as a maximum of three ignition failures on 30 attempts per lamp however none of these ignition failures may occur subsequently. During the ignition phase of the lamp (run-up-time), no cooling of the burner is recommended. Cooling of the burner can lead to ignition failure. It is known that asymmetric cooling after switching the lamp off, can lead to ignition failure in the next attempt due to condensed mercury on 1 of the electrodes. Therefore Philips advises to build in multiple attempts (max. 5 for safety reasons) to start the lamp. Between 2 attempts one has to wait 15s. Philips suggests after a successful starting attempt to keep the lamp burning for at least 15 minutes. The cable has an isolation value of 8kV To limit voltage loss of the ignition pulse, the mutual capacity of the cables may not exceed 40pF. To ensure this, Philips recommends to: Avoid twisted cables Never tie the cables together Avoid contact to conductive plates, especially if those are connected to ground (e.g. via PE) If possible keep the cables straightened having a mutual distance (of 1 to 2 cm between the cables) A suitable Electrical enclosure should be provided in the end-product. Creepage and clearance distances to high voltage parts and traces have to be evaluated in the end-product. Special consideration has to be given to the distances from earthed mounting screws to hazardous voltage traces on the lamp driver PCB Hot restrike At max. bulb temperature of 300 C 25 C: 99% ignition reliability of the total number of switches. (confidence level : 95%) A restrike of the system can be applied 15 seconds after shut down. Restrikes of the system can be repeated up to max. 5 times, if the lamp has not successfully started from the first time. Philips suggests after a successful starting attempt to keep the lamp burning for at least 15 minutes One step : full power - dimming In case of one-step-dimming from full power to minimum dim level, light fluctuations may occur. When a lamp is dimmed, the lamp voltage may drop. If boosted again it is possible that the driver is temporary operating below its full power. This will cause a lower light output. External factors that add mechanical or thermal stress to the lamp should be avoided. Please ask advise in case of doubts. We strongly advise to ensure lamp replacement at end of life, enabled by the UART software of the lamp driver. 11 6 SAFETY - SPECIFIC ATTENTION IS REQUIRED Platinum lamps are designed and produced as a (spare) part of entertainment fixtures, manufactured by OEM s worldwide and sold worldwide. Carefully read the safety instructions. Make sure these instructions are conveyed to the end user.. General safety instructions: unpacking / manipulating lamp: 1 To avoid cutting hazard, wear (preferably clean white cotton) gloves. 2 Platinum lamps tend to wear out over lifetime and the probability of bulb rupture progressively increases beyond the specified lifetime. In order to minimise risk of bulb rupture, do not operate the lamp (or do not allow operation) beyond the specified life time 3 Make sure that touching or replacing a component can only be possible when mains are switched off 4 Check the integrity of lamp cable at lamp exchange Mercury: 5 This type of discharge lamp contains mercury. Mercury is a toxic compound 6 In case of bulb rupture in non-operative mode, avoid inhalation of mercury vapour, and clean the spilled mercury according prevailing safety procedures. 7 In case of bulb rupture during lamp operation, mercury vapour will be emitted. Avoid inhalation. Take precautions to avoid prolonged exposure to this mercury vapour. 8 Furthermore, user manuals and instructions for the end user (consumer) should warn for risks and indicate precautions to be taken to avoid prolonged exposure to mercury vapour in case of bulb rupture. High Operating Lamp Temperature 9 In operation the Platinum lamp gets extremely hot and develops a very high internal pressure. In case of bulb rupture, the safety of the application is to be secured by adequate shielding of the lamp in order to avoid glass parts coming out of the device, even during testing. 10 In operation the lamp gets extremely hot, as well as surrounding parts in the fixture. Before touching lamp, driver and/or other internal parts make sure the fixture has sufficiently cooled down. 11 Do not put lamp on combustible material High Intensity Light Beam: 12 During operation the lamp creates a very high intensity beam, never look directly in the light beam. 13 Prevent the exposure of combustable materials to the light beam 14 Make sure necessary precautions are taken to be compliant with directive 2006/25/EC UV & IR radiation: 15 The lamp generates an amount of UV & IR radiation 16 Make sure that necessary precautions are taken to be complaint with IEC (e.g. the use of personel protective equipment is strongly recommended both for eyes and exposed skin) High Voltage: 17 Safety protection is needed for the lamp area because of the high ignition pulses, dependent on type, listed in 3.1 Conductivity: 18 The reflector coating is conductive. The customer needs to take actions to prevent electrocution and short circuit of the lamp. Page 11 of 12

12 7 INSTRUCTION FOR USE 1. Never touch the burner or reflector mirror with bare hands. If bare hands have touched it, it should be cleaned with a lint free towel before installing the lamp. 2. The lamp should be operated on the lamp driver as mentioned in paragraph Fast switching cycles will reduce lamp life (e.g. 10min on 10min off). 4. Max torque on the side connectors = 0.5 Nm. 5. The set maker must design a lamp house to keep glass pieces of bulb and reflector in the lamp house. 6. Visible arc instability has to be suppressed by set optics. 7. Connection : see ANL ENVIRONMENTAL LAWS 8.1 EU 8.2 USA At end of service life, lamps should be treated as chemical waste (in view of mercury content), and be disposed of in compliance with national regulations/law. To comply in accordance with the Law of Vermont, that obliges the visible notification on a lamp in case it contains mercury, a Hg logo will be added on the reflector of the lamp. Besides the reflector, also lamp packaging with destination USA needs to notify the customer that the packaging contains mercury added products.
