2 Hi friends, Welcome to our 41st annual bull and bred heifer sale. This is a special sale for XL Sim-Angus because after holding our sale at Kist Livestock in Mandan for the last 31 years, we are moving home to Lemmon Livestock where we began our production sales 41 years ago. Even though this is a very big change for us, our cattle philosophy will not change. Honesty, integrity, and good, functional cattle are what we always aim for and we intend to keep it that way. XL Simmental is not as flashy in promotion as many other seedstock operations. We run our cowherd mostly like commercial operations. Our cows are not pampered and must raise a good calf every year or they re off to market. Last year was a challenge here at XL Sim-Angus and my best view of 2018 is from a rear view mirror! We suffered through severe drought but we did manage to catch a large hail storm. We didn t have a grain crop and anything that could make a windrow was put up for hay. The best crop we had was our calf crop. The bull calves averaged 717 pounds for their 205 weight and that s just a few pounds off from our 2017 bull crop which was our best ever. We ve been utilizing AI for 50 years and that is stacking the top beef genetics available from one generation to the next. I believe Sim-Angus cattle are perfect for our environment and they utilize the best traits of the Simmental and Angus breeds. The average weight of the bulls was 1174 on January 26 with an ADG of 3.44 on test. The ration stays the same each year with 8 lbs. of CHS Bull Challenger, 15 lbs of ground ear corn, 15 lbs. of corn silage and long stemmed hay free choice. This ration works well to insure bull longevity for our customers. The bred heifers are out of our replacement group. Most are AI sired and have an average API of 139. Calving dates are determined by ultra sound by Dr. Ron Ford of Lemmon Vet Clinic. Ben and Holly Hetzel are selling 10 bulls this year. The H4H bulls have been top notch in quality and have been well received since joining our sale. They sell under the same terms and conditions as the XL bulls. We will then get him semen checked, and deliver him to your ranch in North or South Dakota. 11. Option 3: Send the bull home to XL Ranch on sale day and we will deliver him to your ranch within 2 weeks. 12. Free delivery to all points in North or South Dakota. XL Ranch will work with customers in other states to assist in delivery at the lowest cost possible. 13. Our bulls are 100% guaranteed through the first breeding season (August 31) for health, fertility, accidents, and disposition. If you have a problem with our bulls, give us a call and we ll make it right. Our first step will be to try and replace the bull. If we can t do that we ll arrange credit at next years sale. Finally, if credit is not satisfactory, you will be refunded the purchase price of the bull. Your responsibility will be to contact us when a problem arises. (605) or (800) About EPDs The EPD itself does not imply good or bad performance, only whether the performance of progeny is expected to be above or below that of progeny from average parents. The birth weight and calving ease EPDs are the most commonly misunderstood. For the birth weight EPD, positive values indicate heavier-than-average birth weights. For calving ease EPD, the more positive the value, the easier the bull calves. API (All-Purpose Index): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield. TI (Terminal Index): Evaluates sire for use on mature cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield. Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a $50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed. This guy is thick and deep with lots of capacity. XL Simmental 4-H Award In September of 2003, Larson XL Simmental sponsored an award that gives a deserving young 4-H member an open Simmental heifer. This award is given to the Grand Champion Jr. Showman at the Lemmon Junior Livestock Show held in September of each year. The winner must agree (along with their parents) to show the calf as a bred heifer the following year in the Lemmon Junior Livestock Show. The first calf must be given back to Larson XL Simmental to perpetuate the award. After these obligations are met, the animal is theirs in its entirety. We wanted to sponsor this award because our own children benefited greatly from 4-H as they grew up.
