3 Welcome to our 17th Annual Bull Sale! What a time to be a cowboy! These are certainly good times in the cattle business, but anyone who has been here awhile can remember the tough times. We survived them by running environment-tested cattle that are sound, fertile, and thrifty. Grazing steep river hills without supplement feed is just one way that we weed out the poor doers. This year s offering will help you get through the tough times and capitalize in the good times. We are very excited about the groups of bulls on this sale. We have a range from extremely easy calving bulls for heifers to a set of very powerful bulls for cows. They are all very gentle and in that what you see is what you get condition. The bulls have already passed a semen test and have had their breeding shots. Scrotal circumference measurements are available on a supplement sheet. A feature on this sale will be the 100 purebred yearling Angus heifers. They are herd mates to the bulls selling and have the same sires as advertised for the bulls. Like the bulls they are not over-fed and will be ready to go to grass right after the sale. Many are out of registered cows but we will be selling them as commercialgate cut, 5 or more. 7 Registered or Purebred? You may notice some of our bulls do not record (Expected Progeny Differences). These individuals are purebred Angus but cannot be registered because of the uncertainty in their sire parentage a few generations back. Years ago before parentage tests were available whenever we were not ABSOLUTELY certain if a calf was from AI or natural service, that calf was not papered and deemed purebred commercial. We have kept a few of these replacements each year since our beginning. These purebred cows and calves are recorded at the American Angus Association and ratioed just as the registered ones. For our customers protection, they are also tested for any genetic defects that the AAA may warn us of. Today, with parentage testing available, we can use multiple sires in a pasture and still be certain of sire parentage. Seventy percent of our herd is resistered and thirty percent is purebred. They run as one herd with no consideration for either group. This purebred commercial group has proven very useful to us as we introduced new AI sires into our herd. New sires were first tried in this group and only when they had proven themselves were they used on the registered cows. In summing it up, the purebred individuals do not come with that are sometimes useful. But we feel that we can still know what to expect from their progeny by using birth weights, weaning weights, feed tests, carcass ultrasound, and by living with them 365 days a year! 8 High Maintenance Selection for larger and heavier-milking cows may be outpacing the potential return, says OSU animal scientist. by Troy Smith, field editor In recent years, weaned calf prices have reached record levels. But the prices cattle producers pay for many production inputs also have increased dramatically. That s particularly true for grazed forages, which historically have been a least-cost feed resource. Certainly, commercial cow-calf producers must be costconscious in order to maintain profitability, let alone improve it. With production costs so high, it s not surprising to hear so much talk about developing new genetic selection tools for improving feed efficiency. However, Oklahoma State University (OSU) animal scientist David Lalman said he fears past and current selection emphasis for growth is making beef cows more expensive to maintain. Speaking during the Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) 45th Annual Research Symposium and Convention June 12-15, Lalman discussed the trend toward cows of larger mature size and greater milking ability. Such cows have higher nutrient requirements for which the added cost, in many cases, is not offset by increased productivity. Lalman cited data from various cow country regions suggesting trends in both weaning weight and weaning rate, for several years, have been mostly flat. While the earlier trend toward bigger frame size has been curbed, Lalman said mature cow weight per inch of height continues to increase. He said research indicates that for every 100 pounds (lb.) of increased mature cow weight, her calf weighs and additional 6 lb. at weaning. The value of that added calf weight probably rates from $5 to $7. Every 100 pounds of additional cow weight costs about $42 in added maintenance cost, stated Lalman. You need 50 pounds of calf weight to pay for it, and we re a long way from that. Generally, there has been a push for more muscle and more capacity, but less fat. There is potential for negative impact to fertility, as well as nutrient requirements. Less body fat in proportion to muscle means these cows have to be heavier to obtain the same fat composition, which is still the best mediator we are aware of driving fertility, Lalman said. Bigger cows may have to achieve a higher body condition score to be in optimum condition for reproduction, and producers may have trouble distinguishing what is muscle and what is fat when trying to assess whether cows are in optimal condition for rebreeding. Regarding selection for milk, Lalman said selection has pushed lactation potential so far that cows of some beef breeds are approaching maintenance levels for the Holstein breed. I suggest to you, said Lalman, that the pendulum has already swung too far, and we are trying to make the environment fit the kind of cows we like. Lalman said targeting more moderation in growth, mature size and milk, combined with modification of ranch stocking rates would seem a good response to economic trends and likely would result in increased efficiency. 27 Ole & Sven A few years ago, a potential customer came ot the ranch and wanted to drive through the cow herd. On the drive, I told him the old joke about Ole and Sven going into business together One hot summer they were eating a nice cold watermelon and got the idea to take some melons to the beach and sell them. So they bought a truckload of melons for one dollar each then hauled them six miles to the beach and sold them for one dollar each. Business had been very good for one week when Ole asked Sven how much money they had made. That s when Sven discovered they had lost about one hundred dollars. Ole said, I guess we need a bigger truck! On that same drive, my potential customer explained that he had been using bulls from a huge, famous ranch. They have some of the best and biggest numbers in the breed. He then told me that he was having a difficult time getting his first calf heifers to rebreed. So now he keeps back several more than he really needs to meet his quota! I feel like there is a misconception in the cattle world that somehow we get free weight if we use a bull with huge weaning and yearling weights. We do get larger cattle IF THEY GET THE FEED REQUIRED TO MEET THEIR NEEDS! Otherwise, we get hard-doing cattle. Notes
