Serrated face flame-hardening T All GEDORE Swedish pipe wrenches are additionally flame-hardened at the teeth by a hardness unit developed by our Special Machinery Construction section. A uniform distribution of temperature across the entire jaw surface ensures a stress-relieved additional hardening of the surface of the teeth. The DIN specified hardness values are surpassed with ease by GEDORE pipe wrenches. The grip holds up for years even under the rough and tough daily routine. Round thread with undetachable adjusting nut A non-detachable adjusting nut with round thread ensures a width adjustment. A round thread stands up better than other thread types to mechanical damage and soiling. It allows the adjusting nut on the pliers shaft to run rapidly, evenly and precisely. Self-clamping serrated face The self-clamping serrated face grips reliably and firmly and this is intensified as the turning resistance is increase. There is no need to press the handles together. GEDORE Swedish pipe wrenches have that non-slip grip - even on smooth pipes. 554

4 Manufacturing process for pipe wrenches The pipe pliers comprise a hook, shaft, sleeve, knurled nut and locking ring. The individual parts are initially manufactured separately. Final machining is carried out on the assembled pipe wrench. The Head (1) The blank is stamped in an eccentric press from steel flat stock. The steel used is GEDORE chrome-vanadium special steel. The thick head and slim shaft can already be identified (2) The blank is heated precisely to forging temperature in the continuous furnace and then forged in a forging die (3) The excess material is removed by de-burring. Scale is removed by sand blasting and grinding (4) Thread cutting (5) The slot for the shaft is milled. The teeth are broached The Shaft (1) The blank is stamped in an eccentric press from steel flat stock. The steel used is GEDORE chrome-vanadium special steel. The thick head and slim shaft can already be identified. (2) The blank is heated precisely to forging temperature in the continuous furnace and then forged in a forging die. The Sleeve (1) The sleeve is stamped from steel (3) The excess material is removed by deburring. Scale is removed by sand blasting and grinding. (4) The rivet hole for the sleeve is drilled. (2) The sleeve is pre-bent (5) The joint is machined to its final geometry in the machining centre. (6) The teeth are broached. (3) The stamped geometry gives the finished sleeve high flexural strength. It is subsequently hardened in the continuous furnace (1) In the area of the slot, the hook is widened and pushed through the shaft. Once this is done, the hook is pressed back to its original size. (2) In the continuous furnace, the pipe wrench is heated to hardening temperature, quenched in a water bath and completely hardened through. To achieve the optimum combination of hardness and toughness, the wrench is annealed throughout. The teeth of GEDORE pipe wrenches are then once again flame hardened. The additional hardness this achieves ensures a long tool life. The sleeve is pushed on the shaft and riveted to the hook. Before entering the paint shop, the pipe wrench is straightened, descaled and degreased. (3) The pipe wrench is stove enamelled. The side surfaces of the head are ground and treated with a corrosionprotection agent. The final step is to screw on the knurled nut and the locking ring. 555
