4 Gatic 2000 Brochure 4/03 16/11/05 8:25 PM Page 4 GATIC 2000 Product Standard With a history of installations dating back more than seventy years, Gatic 2000 is without doubt a fully proven International Standard for engineered access covers and drainage gratings. The very first Gatic cover was designed by Vivian Elkington in 1928 for The Shell International Petroleum Company who required a gas and airtight cover to provide access to below ground petroleum storage tanks in their garages across the world. The trade name Gatic is actually an acronym for Gas Air Tight Inspection Covers. Shopping Centres In fact one of the very first Gatic covers as supplied to Shell in 1928 can still be seen in a Shell garage in Malta. Power Stations The unique feature of the original patented Gatic design was the closely machined horizontal and vertical seating faces of the cover and frame components which, when assembled into a complete unit, provided a cover and frame that was sealed against the ingress of dirt and water and did not rock under traffic. Although the Gatic cover has evolved over the years from being a single Shell type unit into a system of access covers with applications ranging from pedestrian to aircraft loading, the seating principal still prevails irrespective of the size of unit or the number of cover parts. Today, Gatic enjoys the unique status of being the foremost international manufacturer of engineered access covers and drainage gratings with a history of proven performance on international projects dating back more than seventy years. Gatic 2000 recessed covers are designed for infilling with concrete as specified in BS EN C45 - Compressive strength of 45N/mm 2 of a 150x150x150mm concrete cube using a 10mm aggregate. Gatic 2000 solid top covers incorporate a non-slip lozenge pattern. The seating faces of Gatic 2000 covers and frames will be machined so that when positioned together the metal to metal contact achieved will be within 0.25mm tolerance. When Gatic 2000 units are installed to the same degree of accuracy imparted during manufacture, the covers will be non rocking under traffic and sealed against the ingress of road dirt and other detritus. The interposition of a film of graphite grease between the contacting seating faces of Gatic 2000 units will provide a gas and airtight seal and a watertight joint under normal rainwater conditions. Where an extreme head of pressure may occur Gatic 2000 units can be fitted with an additional fixings. Refer to page 13 on Special Facilities. The machined underside seating face of Gatic 2000 covers facilitates the slide out technique of removal and replacement. Jack screw operating keys locate positively and securely into Gatic 2000 covers and are a necessary tool if the inherent cover seal is to be broken effectively and to allow operator maximum control during operation. Gatic 2000 covers are designed to inhibit removal by unauthorised personnel. Locking bolts can be fitted into Gatic 2000 cover keyways as an additional security feature.

11 Gatic 2000 Brochure 4/03 28/11/05 3:09 PM Page 11 Closed Keyway Interchangeability Gatic 2000 cover keyways will be fitted with a plastic plug to prevent blockage by road dirt or other detritus. Gatic 2000 covers produced from the same pattern will normally be interchangeable but to ensure that tolerances achieved during manufacturing can be replicated on site, all covers and frames will be notched across the surface joint and/or numbered. Design Specification Loading Frame Bars Rigidity Secure Support Beam Wallbox Finishes Installation Levelling Bolts All Gatic 2000 covers will withstand the test load, deflection and maximum deformation criteria specified in BS EN 124, for each loading category. Gatic 2000 Type M and Type DM supporting frames will incorporate an I beam design profile to provide a robust and rigid frame which will withstand the specified test loads, without any concrete infill or backfill. The robust and rigid design of the Gatic 2000 Type M and DM frame, combined with the close manufacturing tolerances provides a monolithic structure which will withstand the dynamic factors associated with traffic movement and impact. The clear opening between Gatic 2000 supporting frames will be at least 10mm greater than the pit/chamber design to allow for minor deviations in pit construction dimensions. Supporting beams in Gatic 2000 multispan units are easily removed with appropriate lifting equipment to facilitate access to the total chamber area. Beam wallboxes will not project into the chamber opening. Gatic 2000 units will be coated with a black bituminous solution which acts as a temporary protection during transit. Removable supporting steelwork will be galvanised to BS EN ISO Each consignment of Gatic 2000 units will be accompanied by comprehensive installation instructions. All side frame bars and wallboxes are fitted with bolts to assist in the levelling of the unit during installation. These can be used to assist in levelling the unit during installation. 13 Gatic 2000 Brochure 4/03 17/01/ :24 Page 13 Security The fit of the Gatic 2000 cover and frame is such that without the correct lifting key unauthorised entry into the pit is virtually impossible. If required, locking screws and/or frame anchor bolts can be incorporated. Special Facilities Ventilation Ventilation can be provided by fitting four 25mm dia ventilation tubes in the covers. Water Tightness Under Pressure Standard units with locking screws and holding down bolts are available to withstand a reasonable upward pressure. Vibration Resistant Locking System To prevent the movement of covers in high density traffic conditions, we recommend the use of a factory fitted vibration resistant locking system. Safety Grids Hinged lift-out galvanised steel safety grids (with padlock facility if required) can be incorporated into Gatic 2000 units. 13

24 Gatic 2000 Brochure 4/03 1/12/05 2:35 PM Page 24 GATIC 2000 Guide to the installation of Single Covers & Frames All frames must be adequately, solidly and continuously supported to a degree sufficient for the designed load conditions in each particular case. Because of the diversity of site conditions it is not possible to give precise instructions for each application but the following details will serve as a guide to installation in most cases. All Gatic 2000 covers have been fitted within their respective frames to a degree that the seating faces are in metal to metal contact. They must be set up in position at site with covers in their own frames (as indicated by numbers and/or grinding nick on top edge and/or as steel banded together) to the same degree of fit and kept thus while concreting in position. 1) Place centrally Place the unit squarely over the pit on a prepared foundation making sure the frame does not overhang the pit wall. 2) Adjust to correct level Using the levelling bolts provided in the frame, adjust to the required level. 3) Shuttering Remove cover and shutter inside face of pit. 4) Metal to metal contact Clean contacting faces of cover and frame then place the cover in position making sure of metal to metal contact on all seating faces by adjusting as stated in 2 above. 5) Mask keyholes Position nylon keyhole plugs in keyholes before concreting. 6) Mask holes in base Where applicable, cover all holes in the base plate of cover with suitable material i.e. metal, slate, etc. 7) Good concrete Concrete the frame in position and fill cover (if of recessed type) with C45/10 concrete. Thoroughly tamp to eliminate voids. 46 Gatic 2000 Brochure 4/03 1/12/05 2:45 PM Page 46 GATIC 2000 Guide to the installation of Duct and Continuous Trench Covers & Frames 3 All frames must be adequately, solid and continuously supported to a degree sufficient for the designed load conditions in each particular case. Because of the diversity of site conditions it is not possible to give precise instructions for each application but the following details will serve as a guide to installation in most cases. All Gatic 2000 covers have been fitted within their respective frames to a degree that the seating faces are in metal to metal contact. They must be set up in position at site with covers in their own frames (as indicated by numbers and/or grinding nick on top edge and/or as steel banded together) to the same degree of fit and kept thus while concreting in position. 1) Prepare rebates Prepare frame rebate in accordance with dimensions on drawing provided. 2) Connect first frame section Place end frame number 1 in position followed by adjacent frame member numbered 1-2 and 2-3 (normally joined in one section). Remove nuts and washers from bolts at ends of side members but do not disturb lead pads. Join corners together with nuts and bolts finger tight. See ILLUSTRATION F. 3) Position first cover Clean contacting faces of frame and cover number 1-2 then position cover to match frame numbering. This method of cleaning prior to positioning is to be followed every time a cover is placed in its frame. 4) Adjust to correct level Using the levelling bolts provided in the frame, adjust to the required level ) Mask key holes Position nylon keyhole plugs in keyholes. 10) Mask holes in base Where applicable, cover all holes in the base plate of covers with suitable material i.e., metal, slate etc. 11) Final check Before concreting check that covers are in metal to metal contact with their frames and each other and that all grinding nicks are in alignment (see Note 7 above). Leave void around U-clamps to ensure clamp removal after concrete has matured. Infill voids after removing clamps. 12) Good concrete Concrete the covers and frames in position with grade C45/10 concrete. Thoroughly tamp to eliminate voids. Allow to mature before any load is applied. 2 F Frame Levelling Bolts 1 5) Shuttering Remove covers, shutter inside face of pit, then replace covers. 6) Metal to metal contact Clamp together the vertical seating faces to ensure a metal to metal fit on all contact faces and finally tighten corner frame joint bolts. 7) Connect second frame section Place the next two frame sections, i.e. number 3-5 in position, removing nuts and washers as before, so that the number 3 frame joint can be made. G 13) Clean and regrease After installation and whenever cover is removed clean and regrease all seating faces of cover and frame before replacing. (We would recommend a graphite based grease). Finally refit nylon keyhole plugs. 8) Placing of covers Place covers No. 2-3, 3-4 in position, repeating the same sequence of operations as specified for cover No Repeat the previous sequence with the remaining frames and covers until the end of the duct is reached. 66 Gatic 2000 Brochure 4/03 24/11/05 12:42 PM Page 66 GATIC 2000 Guide to the installation of Multispan Covers & Frames All Gatic 2000 covers have been fitted within their respective frames to a degree that the seating faces are in metal to metal contact. They must be set up in their position at site with covers in their own frames (as indicated by numbers and/or grinding nick on top edge) to the same degree of fit and kept thus while concreting in position. All frames and beam wallboxes must be adequately, solidly and continuously supported to a degree sufficient for the designed load conditions in each particular case. Because of the diversity of site conditions it is not possible to give precise instructions for each application but the following details will serve as a guide to installation in most cases. A 1) Prepare rebates ILLUSTRATION A shows frame rebate and beam wallbox pockets which should be prepared in accordance with dimensions shown on drawing provided ) Prepare frame Place the frame sections on prepared rebates ensuring that the numbers marked on each frame component are matched in the manner shown in ILLUSTRATION B. Remove connecting nuts and washers from bolts at ends of side components without damaging lead pads so that joints between side and end frames can be made. Cover sequence will be related to the numbering of frame components as shown. 1 Beam Wallbox B 3) Assemble frame sections Connecting nuts and washers can then be located and finger tightened. See ILLUSTRATION C ) Position beam Carefully lower removable beam into position first making sure that all contact surfaces are thoroughly clean and that identification numbers match those of frames. See ILLUSTRATION D. Check thoroughly that beam wallboxes are properly supporting the beam and are fitting metal to metal on all contact faces by clamping over the vertical seatings as shown. 1 C 3 Number Tags 4 6 Beam Wallbox 66

67 Gatic 2000 Brochure 4/03 25/11/05 10:01 AM Page 67 5) Cleaning Thoroughly clean all contact surfaces of covers, frames and beams. 6) Position and adjust covers to correct level. Place front row covers No. 1-2 and 4-5 in correct positions as detailed on drawing (covers are numbered on underside). If necessary adjust levelling bolts to ensure that covers do not rock. Insert remainder of covers repeating this operation. See ILLUSTRATION E. It is important that all contacting seating faces are held securely together prior to concrete filling so as to maintain the high degree of fit imparted to the product at our Works. The securing of the cover to its frame is achieved by the use of U-clamps that are located over the vertical seatings of both cover and frame. (A sufficient number of U-clamps are included in the delivery). Finally tighten up bolts at break joints. 12) Clean and regrease After installation and whenever cover is removed clean and regrease all seating faces of cover and frame before replacing. (We would recommend a graphite base grease). Finally fit nylon keyhole plugs. 7) Shuttering Remove a few covers and shutter inside face of pit. Replace covers and ensure they fit correctly. Frame Levelling Bolts 8) Mask key holes Position nylon keyhole plugs in keyholes. Manual Jack Screw Key (not to be used for mechanical or crane lifting) 1) Clear all obstructions from key hole. 2) Slacken off Jack Screw before placing key in position. 3) Insert Tee Bolt in the key hole, turn clockwise through 90º and tighten Lock Nut. 4) Jack Screw can now be tightened to act on frame and break seal. 5) Slacken off Jack Screw before replacing cover. Multispan Covers and Frames 9) Mask holes in base Where applicable, cover all holes in the base plate of covers with suitable material i.e. metal, slate etc. 10) Final check Before concreting check that covers are in metal to metal contact with their frames and each other and that all grinding nicks are in alignment (see Note 7 above). Leave void around U-clamps to ensure clamp removal after concrete has matured. Infill voids after removing clamps. 11) Good concrete Concrete the covers and frames in position with grade C45/10 concrete. Thoroughly tamp to eliminate voids. 87 Gatic 2000 Brochure 4/03 23/11/05 10:31 AM Page 87 GATIC 2000 Lifting keys Manual Jack Screw Key Operation Method of removing Gatic 2000 covers using manual lifting keys 1) Clear all obstructions from key holes. 2) Slacken off Jack Screw before placing key in position. 3) Insert Tee Bolt in the key hole, turn clockwise through 90º and tighten Lock Nut. 4) Jack Screw can now be tightened to act on frame and break seal. 5) Lift front and slide out cover. 6) Slacken off Jack Screw before replacing cover.
