1 Dallas Traffic Safety Coalition Call to order A meeting of Dallas Traffic Safety Coalition was held at Plano Police Department, th St. Plano, TX on June 6, 2017 at 10:02 am. Attendees Attendees included: Robert White, TXDOT Bernadine Moore, TXDOT Matt Baxter, McKinney Police Department Derek Stansell, McKinney Police Department Mary McCoy, IPC Helmut Wolff, CTS Cathy Glenn, Texas Health Dallas Brad Leonard, Grand Prairie Police Department Robert Arredondo, Dallas Police Department Shauntona Wagner, State Farm Gordon Putnam, Carrollton Police Department Melissa Everett, Carrollton Police Department Melanie Batdorf, Collin County District Attorney s Office Cameron McBean, Plano Police Department Mike Aguirre, Garland Police Department Ian Dudley, Mesquite Police Department Patricia Gaffney, TTSDL/NSC Larry Wise, Cedar Hill Police Department Mark Parson, Irving Police Department Cinthia Ibarra, Children s Health Gabriella Rodriguez, Children s Health Approval of minutes Dallas Traffic Safety Coalition minutes from March 7, 2017, motion to approve was Helmut Wolff and seconded by Mary McCoy.
2 Meeting Notes Becky Cantu-Aguilar, MADD, has moved and will no longer being serving as secretary for the Dal- TraSC. Melissa Everett, Carrollton Police Department, will now serve as the secretary. The Dal-TraSC website will be updated after the June 6 th meeting. Robert White will be responsible for providing updates. Coalition Logo will be developed by Frisco Technology School; since it was the end of the school when Dal-TraSC approached them; FTS will use the development of the Logo as a project in the new school year. Paige Ericson-Graber, Texas A&M Transportation Institute (TTI), provided a presentation on the Texas Impaired Driving Task Force. The Task Force provides various resources related to Education, Enforcement, and Collaboration on their website, All publications on the site are available for the pubic to print. TTI can data-driven resources regarding crash and driving impaired statistics to agencies free of charge. Copy of PowerPoint is also attached. Upcoming Conferences: TTI Traffic Safety Conference, June 7-9, 2017 Las Colinas, TX TTI Impaired Driving Forum, February 7, 2018 Austin, TX LifeSavers Conference, April 22-24, 2018, San Antonio, TX 2018 Grants - TXDOT worked last week to complete all modifications have been completed and if a grant was submitted it was approved. Be on the lookout for Electronic Signatures on official documents. Member Spotlight Bernadine Moore future speaker at conference is a entrepreneur who has developed a way to notify first responders of wrong-way drivers on highway. Robert Arredondo, Dallas Police Department will be hosting Texas Police Olympics; Motorcycle Rodeo Fair Park, 6/11-13; Family Event at no cost and lunch is free to participants. Trish, with Texas Teen Safe Driving Campaign o Rolls of stickers available for handout. o House Bill 62 (Distracted Driving) is on the governor s desk please send letters; Texas is one of four states that does not have a statewide distracted driving ban. o Teen s in the Driver s Seat is celebrating 15 years Children s Health received a grant for car seat safety and distracted driving. Looking for nonprofits to coordinate child safety seat installs. Melanie Batdorf, Collin County District Attorney s Office Collin County continues No Refusals every weekend. Helmut Wolff, CTS Wanted feedback from officers on slow drivers on highway and if there was a plan to reduce the problem; at time there is no law in Texas regarding minimum speed limit, law enforcement personnel address as needed. We believe that we can significantly improve traffic safety We believe that we can eliminate impaired driving We believe that we can affect change more efficiently as a collection of concerned stakeholders and program partners We believe that one life saved is worth our strongest effort
8 What are We Doing? Educating Providing resources at the state and local level Texas Impaired Driving Plan Texas Impaired Driving Forum Creating awareness about the impaired driving issue by: Educating citizens through educator toolkits; Traditional trainings; Peer-to-peer group interaction; Employer education programs; and Media outreach campaigns Enforcing Stepping up enforcement efforts through: Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) grants and Impaired driving mobilization grants No refusal weekends with high visibility enforcement Collaborating Groups like the Texas Impaired Driving Task Force and statewide coalitions are creating partnerships to attack the problem from many different angles
