9 HGHLGHTS 1994 During 1994 calendar year there were 134,171 reportable crashes in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania involving the deaths of 1,440 persons and injury to another 130,678 persons. A total of 227,532 vehicles and 347,569 persons (including 226,653 drivers) were involved. The estimated cost to society of these crashes was about $4.060 BLLON or approximately $ for every one of Pennsylvania's over 12 million residents. During 1994, there were approximately BLLON vehicle miles of travel on Pennsylvania's 118,445 miles of maintained road. The 1994 fatality rate of 1.56 killed per hundred million vehicle miles was again the lowest ever recorded in Pennsylvania., ON AVERAGE: There was a reportable traffic crash every 3.9 minutes in the Commonwealth. There were 3.9 persons killed each day or about one every 6.1 hours. There were persons injured each day or about one every 4.0 minutes. One out of every 41.9 licensed drivers was involved in a reportable traffic crash. One out of every 45.9 registered vehicles was involved in a reportable traffic crash. 63.0% of drivers in all crashes and 77.1 % of drivers in fatal crashes were MALE. 62.4% of all crashes happened in daylight conditions. 51.9% of fatal crashes happened on weekends (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) with Saturday the high day with 20.8% of the fatal crashes. The worst three-hour time period for fatal crashes was between 2 P.M. and 5 P.M. with 16.4% of the fatal crashes. 77.3% of all crashes occurred under no adverse weather conditions and 65.3% of all crashes occurred on dry road surfaces. 9.6% ofab crashes and 36.7% of the FATAL crashes involved alcohol. 1
