4 Overview ALE has over 30 years experience operating girder frame trailers within the global heavylift industry. ALE has a whole fleet of fit-for-purpose girder frames and axles. The fleet includes standard 3m wide trailers, with 3 file and 4 file options, specialist widening units that can be widened out (underload) in order to provide a greater weight distribution and a low dead weight, units with longer axle spacings that can be configured in widths up to 4.8m (2 file), as well as SPMT, PST and ADDrive units. These are all designed in compliance with local highway constraints to fulfil different functions, carry varying weights and offer maximum levels of manoeuvrability. From our smallest and lightest frame, the AL24, to one of our biggest girder frames, the AL600, we have a wide and varied fleet to find the right solution for the job. In fact, we have more equipment and greater options than any other heavy transportation company. Our in-house engineers and project management teams, combined with our experienced drivers and trailer operators, work together and adapt our fleet to ensure we have the optimum transport solution for any load or route. Routing is critical as one of the biggest challenges is finding a suitable route that considers the negotiability, gross weight, axle weights and, above all, the contact footprint. Our specialist routing team work with our engineers and project managers to establish a transport solution that clears the route. 5 DESIGN As there are so many different factors to consider, selecting the right trailer combinations to accompany the girder frame itself plays a pivotal role in obtaining route clearance and achieving successful heavy transportation moves. As loads become heavier, wider and taller, and ultimately more challenging to transport with standard trailers, designing a girder frame solution that could overcome these challenges and carry a load under bridges and over weak structures is essential. ALE owns the most extensive girder frame trailer fleets in the world and, by offering this range and variety in design, we can overcome these challenges. When approached with a transportation challenge, we work closely with our clients to identify the best solution. The type of frame that is chosen is often dictated by the weight and dimensions of the load and the route obstacles, meaning the design of the girder frame configuration needs to be optimised to suit that particular job. With a variety of frames, each with a different configuration, we have a different concept to work with every time. Through careful analysis of the current market and early engagement with clients, ALE identified the need for a higher capacity frame that could carry loads up to 600t. The AL600 was designed as a modular frame that could transport loads under low bridges and maximise manoeuvrability. For short configurations, the main beam sections and load-spreader extensions can be removed to have a low self-weight. The design ensured that the frame can work with a daylight of 3m-6.5m and reduce axle loadings which gives ALE the option to drive in variable configurations to optimise the transportation of the different types of loads. 8 Together, we are Smarter, Safer, Stronger 9 9

6 OVERVIEW OF KEY FEATURES Girder frame trailers are a practical solution for carrying heavy or abnormal loads across public, private or site roads, allowing the load to be carried at the lowest possible profile, whilst distributing the gross load over a greater surface area. This means that they can easily overcome height and weight restrictions on the route, such as low or weak bridges, weight-sensitive surfaces and overhead cables. As the bogies are separated, the girder frames can achieve a better spread on the structures it passes over. The variety of the trailers means there are wider options (in a 2 file configuration) to ensure greater stability across adverse cambers and reducing ground bearing pressure. 10 Together, we are Smarter, Safer, Stronger 11 11

7 DESIGN BENEFITS STEERING CAB LOAD FLEXIBILITY The interchangeability in its configuration provides greater flexibility, allowing for over 40 combinations for the optimum solution to carry different loads of varying weights at different heights. The design of the girder frame trailer and use of cross beams and transport beams means that it is flexible enough to carry a transformer or module of any size. AL24 MAXIMUM CAPACITY: 180t NECK HYDRAULIC TOWER STABILITY Unlike others in the market that offer up to 3m-wide trailers with a narrow stability triangle, we own a selection of widening trailers as wide as 3.6m or even 4.8m (2 file). These achieve a much higher geometric and hydraulic stability and provide much-needed stability. ADAPTABLE AL50 MAXIMUM CAPACITY: 240t AL100 MAXIMUM CAPACITY: 320t GIRDER BEAM SPREADER The variety of the spreaders, that can be used with different girder frames, provide the necessary spread depending on the axles we deploy. By offering a more adaptable solution, the girder frames can work with different routes. HIGH STRENGTH AL30 MAXIMUM CAPACITY: 350t AL500 MAXIMUM CAPACITY: 400t BOGIE DRAW BAR The girder frame is designed to cater for different weights, with an ascending capacity range up to 600t capacity. TECHNICAL NOTES: Safety is embedded into the design of our frames. We have added remote-controlled towers, fitted walkways and ladders for safe accessibility, as well as crowsnests for increased visibility when passing under structures. Floodlights provide additional visibility during night-time moves and purpose-built steer cabs with CCTV systems are also incorporated into the design. 8 OPERATIONAL BENEFITS CASE STUDY COMPLETE SOLUTION For the full solution, the girder frames can be integrated with different ALE equipment, such as the Trojan truck that puts less strain on the overall structure with fewer tractor units so costs can be reduced. Clients can take advantage of our vast fleet of different types of axles and configuration combinations, which can be integrated with beams to suit the size and shape of the load. MORE ROUTE OPTIONS The variety of girder frames hold loads lower to the ground so they can pass under lower bridges and spread weight for a more even weight distribution on structures. Subsequently, more, and potentially shorter, routes are available. REDUCED DISRUPTION We can find the optimum frame for the job. This means we can avoid any unnecessary, and often costly, removal of street furniture as well as any potential site impact or disruption. Furthermore, as the girder frames are designed with narrow necks, (narrow at the tower support and wide near the load), this is the ideal solution when driving around corners. 9 SAFETY FEATURES, THE FUTURE & ENGINEERING The girder frames have been designed in accordance with DNV GL and the most stringent safety regulations. To gain third party approvals, every stage was checked, witnessed and approved by globally recognised independent surveyors. Using these strict criteria ensures the very highest standards of design and fabrication. The equipment has been designed with safety in mind, with additional features and enhancements. This includes improved lighting for night moves and, on the AL600, shock logging, cameras and control systems for steering and height adjustment, which have been installed to increase safety and visibility. To maximise visibility whilst travelling under structures, ALE has also fitted a crowsnest for a crew member to be positioned inside to ensure clearance Together, we are Smarter, Safer, Stronger 17 17

10 CASE STUDY Penwortham quad boosters, UK OVERVIEW: ALE has successfully transported two quad booster units separately to the National Grid substation at Penwortham, using road and barge transportation. The units were then transshipped, offloaded, skidded and jacked into position. SERVICES REQUIRED: The quad boosters, a 267t shunt unit and a 271t series unit, were transported from Stafford to the quayside at Ellesmere Port by girder frame trailers an AL34 (24 axle). The units were then transferred to an AL100 (20 axle) girder frame and loaded to the Terra Marique barge. This sailed from Ellesmere, around the coast and down the River Ribble to Preston. The Terra Marique barge had been moored to the north side of the River Ribble the night before offloading and ALE had pre-positioned five link span ramps, weighing 9.8t each on the south side. The barge was then manoeuvred onto the south side of the river, where it was anchored to the quay by three 40-46t tractor units. The units were rolled off across the link span ramps and into the park at Holme Road, Preston. With just one tidal window per month for these river manoeuvres, detailed and accurate project management was critical. Following overnight stops in the park, monitored by security, both units were then transported by road under police escort, successfully negotiating tight turns and a low bridge on the A59 to Penwortham. As the site roads were too small for the trailers, each unit had to be transshipped and loaded onto 12 axle lines of SPT outside the electrical compound and transported to its plinth. The units were offloaded and jacked-down to a turntable which rotated each unit 90º to achieve the correct orientation. They were then skidded onto the plinth and jacked-down to complete the installation. CASE STUDY Reception, transportation and installation of a boiler, UK OVERVIEW: ALE has received a boiler, weighing 139.7t, from Immingham and transported it to a renewable plant in Lutterworth, UK. Once on site, it was then installed. SERVICES REQUIRED: ALE received the boiler in Immingham, UK, which had been shipped from Texas, USA. It was lifted onto the AL34 girder frame and SPMTs using ALE s lift n lock system. It was then transported using the AL34 girder frame and 22 axle lines of conventional trailers to a renewable plant in Lutterworth, approximately 130 miles away. Once on site, it was offloaded by crane onto 8 axle lines of SPMT and installed into its final position using ALE s lift n lock system Together, we are Smarter, Safer, Stronger 19 19

11 CASE STUDY Delivery of three transformers to Highbury, UK OVERVIEW: ALE was contracted to deliver three transformers, weighing 135t and measuring 7.6m x 4.98m x 4.55m, to the new National Grid substation in Highbury, North London. SERVICES REQUIRED: The transformers were transported from the vendor s manufacturing facility in mainland Europe via the ports of Rotterdam, The Netherlands, and Tilbury, UK. Once the transformers arrived at the Port of Tilbury, all three were offloaded by mobile crane from a coaster vessel. The transformers arrived earlier at the Port of Tilbury on a coaster vessel and were successfully discharged using a mobile crane onto an 8 axle lines of conventional trailer. Two transformers were then offloaded onto temporary supports and the other subsequently loaded onto ALE s AL50 (14 axle) girder frame ready for transport. Each transformer was transported individually, within four months of each other. Each transformer was transported to site using the AL50 girder frame and two of ALE s Trojan trucks over two days. The route from the port to the site had weight and height restrictions and the selection of the AL50 girder frame was the optimum solution for the project. One of the main challenges ALE faced was that the location and layout of the new substation site did not permit direct delivery of the transformers on the AL50 girder frame. This required a transship operation for the transformer from the girder frame onto a smaller trailer. This presented a challenge to ALE as a location close enough to the substation site had to be found where the transship operation could take place. After working with multiple local authorities, ALE s Logistics and Project Management teams found a suitable route. The delivery to site involved taking a route on the M25 motorway in one night, followed by a daytime move through London. Because of site restrictions, ALE needed to transship the transformer and required the road closure of the A1 at Holloway Road a busy high street area of London. ALE offloaded the transformer and transferred it onto 8 axle lines of SPT at Holloway Road. Starting at 10pm, ALE moved the transformers from Tilbury under Police escort to a temporary parking location off the M25. To transport the transformer the short distance along Seven Sisters Road to the substation site, delivering the transformers in front of each foundation. This was all performed within the time permitted by the authorities. All three transformers were delivered safely and on schedule, highlighting an innovative solution for a complex transportation route through urban and residential areas of the Greater London area. After delivery to the substation site, all three transformers were installed by ALE onto their respective foundations using conventional jacking and skidding methods Together, we are Smarter, Safer, Stronger 21 21

12 CASE STUDY Kirkstall Substation transformer delivery, UK OVERVIEW: ALE has successfully delivered a transformer, weighting 143.3t and measuring 8.358m x 5.159m x 4.5m, to Kirkstall Substation near Leeds, UK. SERVICES REQUIRED: The transformer was successfully discharged at Goole Docks, using a mobile crane, onto ALE s AL50 (14 axle) girder frame trailer for road transport to Kirkstall Substation. The delivery to site involved taking a route of over 30 miles from Goole Docks via the M62 and M1 motorways to Kirkstall, Leeds. Once on site, the transformer was offloaded to stands and transshipped onto 8 axle lines of SPT, stored temporarily and then installed using jacking and skidding equipment Together, we are Smarter, Safer, Stronger 23 23

13 CASE STUDY First transformer delivery using the widening trailers, UK OVERVIEW: ALE has used its widening trailers for the first time to transport a transformer from Stafford to Ellesmere Port, UK. SERVICES REQUIRED: The transformer, weighing 231t, was moved in three stages over three days, from Stafford to Congleton, then to Kelsall and, finally, to Ellesmere Port ready for its onward shipment. The transformer was transported using 24 axle lines of the new widening trailers, narrowed in, with an AL34 girder frame Together, we are Smarter, Safer, Stronger 25 25

14 CASE STUDY Delivery and installation of transformers, Norway OVERVIEW: ALE has successfully delivered and installed seven transformers, weighing 225t each, as part of the Nordlink Project in Tonstad, Norway. SERVICES REQUIRED: ALE received the transformers from the Port of Kvinesdal and transported them using the AL100 girder frame and 26 axle lines of conventional trailers along a very technically challenging 70km route, through the Norwegian mountains. This was the first milestone ALE has reached in the major joint Norwegian/ German renewable energy project. Referred to as the Green Cable project, which at 623km long, it will be the longest high voltage direct current (HVDC) connection in Europe. CASE STUDY Transportation of a stator generator, South Africa OVERVIEW: ALE has transported stator generators from Small Craft Harbour, Richards Bay, to two of South Africa s biggest fossil power plants: Medupi Power Station in Limpopo province, 985km from the port, and Kusile Station in Mpumalanga province, 650km from the port. SERVICES REQUIRED: This project involved collaboration between ALE s South African and UK operations teams, as a large amount of plant, equipment and manpower was exported with less than three months notice door to door. Each 357t generator was transported using two 16 axle, three file conventional bogies, one AL500 frame, three 8x8 FAUNS, a 6x6 Mercedes Benz and two 8x4 Mercedes Benz trucks. The route involved a 14% incline while travelling through Swaziland, and the Mfolozi Bridge in South Africa had to be propped up to support the weight Together, we are Smarter, Safer, Stronger 27 27
