Gary & Susan Premech Hello everyone, H ere we are another month gone and the summer is slowly dwindling away for another year. We had 25 of our members attend the Region J Rally in Cranbrook on the August long weekend and although there were a couple of hiccups, the event was a success with approximately 140 members attending. The only complaint about the weather was the heat as you could start out in the morning for a ride at 10 C and by afternoon it was up to 34 C. It was great to see a lot of old friends and meet some new ones as well. Our own Kim Coubrough was awarded a certificate for being the youngest male rider and he didn t stop there as he walked away with a number of prizes. This was the first time that the Region put on the event instead of one Chapter and there were things learnt that will help make the future events successful. Participation from all of the Chapters in the future will take away the strain of one small group doing all the work. Next year s rally will be in Red Deer and the Alberta Chapters will all have a roll in the weekend s events. They are going to have the rally the weekend before Wing Ding which is supposed to be in Billings, Montana so members will be able to attend both events. Until next month ride safe!!!! They have earned Level 2 in the GWRRA Levels Program. Kim Coubrough presented the badge. Ron Syroishka spoke about the Grand Fondo on August 22nd and the upcoming Railway Excursion on August 23rd. He also spoke about his plans for a future BBQ. Congratulations to James Tremblay. He has earned Level 3 in the GWRRA Levels Program. Kim Coubrough presented the badge. Medic First Aid Course: Interest exceeded our ideal class size and as a result some of you were unable to be included in the most recent session. We will be having another class later in the year, September/ October timeframe. Anyone interested can let me know at telus.net Advance Rider Course: We are setting up a fall ARC for the weekend of Sept 26/27 at Grey Eagle Casino. This means there will be a classroom portion from 7-9 PM on Sept 25. Classroom to be determined. If we have enough participants we will have 1/2 the class ride Saturday and the other 1/2 of the class will ride Sunday. If not, we all ride on Saturday. A few things to note: 1) You must be a GWRRA member in good standing 2) You must attend the classroom portion 3) Cost to the participants will be $35 July 50/50 Winner Brian Hooker If you are interested, please send me a at hotmail.com or call me at home at Once I have a general idea of the amount of participants I will send out a to you in regards to the particulars.

Wing Wag August 2015 Page 3 As I sit here in my den writing this I am beginning to realize how great is the organization to which we are members. It is Wednesday before the Region J Rally in Cranbrook. All of the planning is now complete and I know we couldn t have pulled it off without lots of help. This year has been a real challenge to have a successful rally. With Reno Rendezvous taking a lot of our member s time, we expected our numbers to drop big time. Boy, have we been surprised! We have almost 150 members coming to Cranbrook! This has exceeded our expectation by almost double. Thank you to everybody for taking the time to come and have a good time with us! We will send out a report about the rally next month. There have been a lot of changes in GWRRA in the last couple of weeks. We now have a new President of GWRRA! Ms. Anita Alkire has accepted the position and is in the process of taking over. Anita brings a wealth of experience to the President position. Most importantly, Anita is and has been a member of GWRRA for many years. This will allow her to bring the member views into the management team. Finally, our voices and concerns will have an avenue right at the top! With Anita accepting this post our neighbours to the south, Region I, now have a new Deputy Director. Mike Briggs, a long time member and Officer has accepted that post. I m sure he will do a great job. We also have new Region Directors in Region K here in Canada. Brian and Lyette MacKay are the new Region K Directors (Ontario. Manitoba and Nunavit). There is a very strong rumor that Billings, Montana may be the site for the 2016 Wing Ding. We haven t been confirmed but we will all know in a month! For us in the west if Billings is true we are going to be scrambling for attendees at our region and Chapter rallies. Maybe there can be an alternative to having a Region J Rally as our fund raiser for the year. Please, if you have an idea how we can do this, share it with your officers. There is also the possibility that Reno Rendezvous will go ahead again in June. With the possibility of Wing Ding in September in Billings we are going to have a lot of choices! I know it will be challenge but what a great conundrum to have! We hope you are all having a great summer and getting lots of riding in! See you down the road Con Williams Region J Director GWRRA

Wing Wag August 2015 Page 6 Text and Photos by: Lance & Kim Medcalf I have to start by saying apparently the person taking the pictures was voluntold to write an article for the newsletter. Guess I ll have to be a bit more secretive about taking pictures in the future. We started the day after a nice breakfast at Fox Hollow Golf course. 12 bikes started out including 8 from our group. Ron Syroishka led the first team of four, followed by Jim & Dorothy Baker, Warren Cooke, and Cheryl Dieissen along with her dog Mattie riding shotgun. Tracy Boyda lead the second team, followed by Lance & Kim Medcalf, Bob Van Ness, and Carol Meyers. We were also joined by a third team consisting of 3 bikes from Innisfail and one from Okotoks. We made our way to Balzac and stopped for a quick gas stop (The couple from Okotoks hadn t joined GWRRA yet and didn t know the first rule of the ride is starting with a full tank and an empty bladder). After a quick fill-up, we were on our way. We followed Hwy 1A east through Ghost Lake to Canmore. We had great weather, beautiful scenery and a great riding group. Along the way, we even saw some wild life on the side of the road (mountain goats). We stopped in Canmore for lunch, and unfortunately as we were pulling into a spot, Lance put his foot down where there was a dip in the road, and tipped the bike. Some of the club members that were in the area came to help. Other than a hit to our pride and pocket book (we broke the driver side mirror and passenger armrest), we were both fine At lunch, when we were telling everyone how embarrassed we were, many members told us their stories of when they tipped their bikes for the first time. It did make us feel a bit better that we weren t the only ones to have done that. After we stopped for a nice lunch break, we got back on our bikes to continue the ride to Lake Louise. As we were pulling out of the back lane parking spot, a car cut us off as we were in the middle of a turn, and we tipped the bike again. This time it was on the other side. I think Lance just wanted to even out the bike. This time the only damage was a few small scratches to the paint. Once again, we had several members helping us out, and we were back on our way. (Continued on page 7)

Wing Wag August 2015 Page 7 (Continued from page 6) The three Innisfail bikes and the bike from Okotoks left us in Canmore. The remaining eight bikes continued to Lake Louise. Unfortunately we didn t have time to make it right to the lake, but turned around after a short gas stop in the town. We continued our ride back on Highway 1, then south to 22X through Bragg Creek, and home. After 7.5 hours, 525 km, and a wonderful ride with a great group of people, we were back home. us mirrors (thanks Stu your mirror worked great), and after replacing the mirror casing, we are ready to be back on the road and looking forward to a summer full of more riding adventures. Lance and I want to thank everyone for the help, very kind words and thoughtfulness when we needed it. We didn t need to tip the bike to find out what a wonderful group of people the GWRRA members are, but it did remind us that we made a great decision in joining this group. Two members offered Text by : Warran Lench N umerous riders in our Calgary chapter have been asking me about my run-flat car tire I use on the rear of my 2002 GL1800. Therefore, I decided to offer some info & my personal experience using a RF car tire over the past 5 years. The best place to start for info, if you don t already know, is this website: Click on Forum at the top left & then in the GL1800 Rider Focus Groups category, click on the Darkside Riders and you will find hundreds of posts. This is where I first learned about using a car tire (Run-Flat) on my bike. I was intrigued from reading all the great experiences from hundreds of Goldwing riders! So, I found a guy selling a spare rim & RF tire in the Classified section, and I thought what the heck and I bought it! After I swapped out my motorcycle rim & tire I went for a ride & after 15 minutes, I was hooked! That was in I was running a Kumho Ecsta 195/55/16 which was a great tire & I got about 28,000 km before I swapped it out in Aug 2013 (it still had lots of rubber left!). This tire was the king of the hill for a few years, but by 2013, everyone was putting on the next great run-flat tire... the Michelin Alpin PA3. I am now running a Michelin Alpin PA3 ZP 195/55R16. It has got great reviews and personally, I love this tire! It is a winter tire, and may be a bit harder to find this time of year. They make a summer & winter version, but everyone loves the winter version, so that is what I got, too. I got mine in Calgary (2013) and I paid $205. The other RF car tire everyone likes right now is the Yokohama Avid Envigor ZPS 195/5516. Others have said it is more of a (Continued on page 8)

Wing Wag August 2015 Page 8 (Continued from page 7) performance tire with a firmer feel to it than the Michelin. Guys are using this tire for aggressive, twisty riding! For now, I really like the Michelin tire as it offers a soft ride and long tread life. However, once my Michelin tire wears out, I will probably give the Yokohama a try! I have 22,000 km on mine & it still looks like new! So now let s look at my Pros & Cons of using a RF car tire over my regular motorcycle tire: PROS: Longer tread life: Some riders are getting over 40,000 km from their RF car tires. Run-Flat safety: You can ride a totally flat, RF tire for approx. 50 miles at 50 mph while you look for the next town. On a motorcycle tire, you are stopped on the side of the ride & not going anywhere! Side Wall Strength: A RF tire has an extremely strong sidewall that will support you & your wife, when you get a total flat while riding. Higher Load Rating: The Michelin Alpin tire load rating is 1200 lbs while the Bridgestone G704 is only 827 lbs. Softer ride: Most of us run 32 psi solo & 36 psi 2-up or when pulling a trailer. This equates to a much softer ride, especially for the wife on the back. Grip: This tire has amazing traction, even on tar snakes, painted yellow lines, gravel, or wet pavement. Ride: The car tire feels almost identical to a regular tire. After 15 minutes of riding on it, you won t know the difference! Only the benefits... then it would be a smart idea to get a TPMS (tire pressure monitoring system). Simply because you would not know when your tire is flat, right? I have this one from Doran: wingstuff.com/products/22885-doran- motorcycle-tire-air-pressure-monitor-system- 2-wheels?context=doran I have been using this since 2010 and it works like a charm! I have mine wired directly to the battery so I just press the button & I know instantly what my pressure is. I bought mine through Wing Stuff. So, as you can see, I am a big fan of the car tire! When you go on the GL1800 riders Darksiders forum, you will see that guys have been talking/using a car tire for about 9 years now! There are thousands of us running this tire & we use them because they are safe, offer amazing traction, and last a long time! Most everyone who switches to a RF car tire never go back to a regular motorcycle tire! If you need me to answer any more questions, feel free to drop me a line. Disclaimer: The facts & figures listed above are accurate to the best of my knowledge. This is my personal experience and therefore the choice to use a run-flat car tire on your Goldwing is entirely your own responsibility. Ride safe! Cheers, Warran Lench Editor s Note: GWRRA and its member Chapters do not endorse or recommend the use of car tires on any motorcycle. The choice to undertake such use is at the sole responsibility of the rider/owner. CONS: NONE However, If you are going to use a run-flat, This article is written by a GWRRA Member about his personal opinions and experiences.
