April 2013 JUNCTION CITY CHAPTER #1508 H.O.G. MONTHLY OFFICERS Director Mike Rhodes Assistant Director Deb Auld Secretary Sue Gwaltney Treasurer Karen Connell Activities Carol Ebersole Ladies of Harley Claudia Perry Road Captain Gerry Jean Assistant Road Captain T.J. Schmidt Editor Wanda Allen Safety Kevin Connell Webmaster Orin Auld Photographer Deb Auld Membership Vonda Copeland Historian Ronnie Scheller Director s Report Mike Rhodes Now that the weather is changing remember to look out for all of the sand on the roads around town. If you are riding in the rural areas always look out for the gravel and rocks that are on the roadway whenever you have a dirt road intersecting the paved road. Don t forget to give your bike the once over before you take it out riding if you have not already done so. One thing I talked about at last month s meeting was something I picked up at the H.O.T training in Dallas back in March. If you see someone new at one of our meetings, rides or gatherings go up and introduce yourself. If you are not comfortable with striking up a conversation with them take them to someone else and introduce them. That person can then introduce the new person to another individual. What a way to make a new person feel comfortable and get them introduced one on one to the others in our group. Try it. We are going to need some help on April 27 at 9 a.m. for the highway clean up. We will be doing this in conjunction with the city-wide clean up. Mark your calendars and come out that day to help. The more people we have the quicker we can get the highway cleaned up. We can either eat free hot dogs at Spin City or take a ride for lunch. Sound like a plan? We will soon have some info coming out on the MDA fundraiser this year. I have some thoughts on something new that I think will be fun and you will want to participate in. We have been invited to the MDA camp this year at Rock Springs. We may tentatively have our Chapter meeting for July at Rock Springs. One last thing, remember to get me your recommendations on members that would be deserving of receiving the Director s Challenge Coin. You can do so in person, via text, , or phone call, however you feel comfortable. Don t ride faster than your guardian angel can fly. Mike Rhodes honoring Gerry Jean with the Director s Challenge Coin

For updates check the most recent newsletter, website, or at City Cycle Sales. Minutes Sue Gwaltney secretary Director Mike Rhodes called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. April 8. A moment of Prayer/Silence was observed for our friends and soldiers serving stateside and overseas, and for our friends and families who are in need of our prayers. This was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Mike welcomed all who were present, including new member, Eric Paxton, who rides a 2002 Dyna Low Rider. Also visiting this month was Frances Clay, Fundraising Coordinator for MDA. Birthdays to celebrate this month include Deb Auld 4/9, Carol Ebersole 4/ 14, Brian Spurlock 4/17 and Barbara Wagner 4/30. March minutes were posted on the Junction City H.O.G. Chapter website. Old Business: 1) T.J. Schmidt is planning a ride to Oakley to meet the Run for the Wall riders on May 19. New Business: 1) Frances Clay, Fundraising Coordinator for MDA, updated our chapter on MDA fundraising plans and MDA Camp. Harley-Davidson has supported the Muscular Dystrophy Association for 33 years. MDA Camp will be held at Rocks Springs this year from July 7 through July 13. Frances suggested our chapter plan a ride to Rock Springs so the children can enjoy looking at the motorcycles. Discussion included moving the meeting to another day so our chapter could ride to Rock Springs on the meeting day or moving the meeting time, having a short meeting and then riding to Rock Springs. Bonnie Templeton made the motion to begin the July 8 meeting at 6:30, having a shorter meeting, and then ride to Rock Springs. The motion was seconded by Vonda Copeland and Gerry Jean, then carried. Liability concerns prevent the chapter from allowing children to ride on motorcycles but children riding in a side car is acceptable. Scott Templeton will try to have his motorcycle with side car available for rides for the children. In celebration of Harley-Davidson s 110th anniversary and collaboration with MDA for 33 years, Harley-Davidson is donating a 2013 Harley 883 Iron Sportster to raffle off to raise funds for MDA. On May 18 Armed Forces Day will be held at Heritage Park. Our chapter will sell tickets for a chance to win the 883 Iron Sportster at Heritage Park from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. along with tickets for a chance to win a Harley basket, which is the fundraiser for our chapter. Ticket prices for the Sportster are one ticket for five dollars or three tickets for ten dollars. Raffle tickets will also be sold at City Cycle Sales. Mike Rhodes will check with the Run for the Wall committee for approval to sell tickets for the 833 Iron on May 18 and 19 at the Run for the Wall event. Drawing for the motorcycle will occur in September. Seventy-five percent of funds raised for MDA by our chapter goes to families and clinics in the Junction City area. 2) Gerry Jean, Road Captain, led an Iron Butt ride beginning on Saturday, March 16. The ride began at Handy s gas station in Grandview Plaza with Johnny Ryan as a witness, starting at midnight. Riders Gerry Jean, Jay Copeland and Ronnie Scheller arrived at the Big Texan in Amarillo, Texas for a buffet brunch at 10:30 a.m. The riders returned to Junction City at 10:15 p.m. Saturday, March 16 after riding 1,116 miles for 22 hours and eight minutes. Paperwork to verify the ride was turned in to the Iron Butt Association upon completion of the ride. Riders Frances Clay (MDA) (Minutes continued on next page)

APRIL (Minutes continued from previous page) will receive a patch, pin, license plate frame and a large certificate. 3) Linda Rush resigned from the photographer position due to health reasons. 4) Deb Auld agreed to be the chapter s photographer unless another member would like to fill that position. Anyone else interested in being the photographer, please or call Director, Mike Rhodes. 5) Highway cleanup for our chapter is scheduled for April 27 in conjunction with city wide cleanup. Johnny Ryan made a motion to meet at City Cycle Sales at 9 a.m. to begin highway cleanup. Kevin Connell seconded the motion and the motion was carried. Gerry Jean will plan a ride after highway cleanup. Officer Reports: Director: Mike Rhodes-Awarded the Director s Challenge Coin to Gerry Jean for going Gun Ho in his new position as Road Captain. Assistant Director: Deb Auld Secretary: Sue Gwaltney Treasurer: Karen Connell-Reported the balances of both the general account and the Run for the Wall account. Editor: Wanda Allen Road Captain: Gerry Jean-Provided the chapter an April calendar listing the following rides: 4/14 Roller Coaster Ride meet at City Cycle Sales (C.C.S.) at 9 a.m., 4/20 Carriage Cross, Yoder, KS. Meet at Sapp Bros. 8 a.m., 4/21 Prairie Band Breakfast meet at Sapp Bros. 8 a.m., 4/27 Whistle Stop Café Walton, KS, meet at C.C.S. at 9 a.m., 5/5 Cassoday, KS. Meet at Sapp Brothers at 8 a.m. Webmaster Orin Auld will add the rides to the chapter website. Safety Officer: Kevin Connell-Group Riding Seminar planned for April 13 at 2 p.m. at City Cycle Sales in collaboration with Road Captain Gerry Jean. Hand signals and planning means of escape in dangerous riding situations are among several topics to be discussed. Weather permitting, a short ride will proceed after the seminar. Kevin discussed the importance of riders watching for sand, salt, chemicals, shredded tires, and chunks of wood while riding. He also discussed the importance of staggered riding and the dangers of riding side by side. Activities Director: Carol Ebersole-Carol is coordinating with officers in the planning of MDA and the sale of tickets for the Harley theme basket for the chapter s fundraiser. Ladies of Harley: Claudia Perry-Harley Theme Basket for the chapter fundraiser will be completed to begin the sale of tickets on Saturday, April 14 and continuing the sale of tickets for the basket until the drawing on Saturday, May 25. Claudia will also have a table set up on May 18 to sell tickets, along with tickets for the MDA Sportster, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The tickets for the basket are one dollar per ticket. Claudia has a sign-up sheet at City Cycle Sales for each day to sell tickets. A Ladies of Harley ride for the ladies is planned for Saturday, April 20. This is a chance for new lady riders to become comfortable with riding in a group. This is a group ride to Topeka for lunch. Ladies, meet at City Cycle Sales at 10:45 a.m. and kickstands up at 11 a.m. Ladies, you may ride with the group in a vehicle instead of motorcycle. Chapter members are to meet at City Cycle Sales at 9:15 a.m. on Saturday, May 4 to make the zipper pulls for the Run for the Wall riders. Photographer: Membership: Vonda Copeland-Twenty-one new members have been added to the roster, with 16 having new bikes and five paid members. Total members for our chapter is 94. Our chapter form for membership registration differs from the national form: a space for the member s birthdate has been added to the chapter form. Our chapter form has been this way for several years. Mike Rhodes stated that after attending the National Officer s Training, he questions whether our form meets National Harley Owner Group standards or if the change causes a legality issue. Mike will check with the National Harley Owners Group on this matter. Webmaster: Orin Auld-Orin will continue to update the calendar of events/activities on the website. Historian: Not present. Gerry Jean, Ronnie Scheller and Jay Copeland SaddleSore 1000 Iron Butt ride (Minutes continued on next page)

4 APRIL 2013 (Minutes continued from previous page) Good of the order: Get well cards were signed by chapter members for Linda Rush, Chuck Ford and Charles Gwaltney. Linda Rush resigned as the chapter photographer for health reasons. Chuck Ford is at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka. Charles Gwaltney is recovering from knee surgery. Our chapter sends get well thoughts and prayers. Door Prize: New member Eric Paxton won the door prize drawing. 50/50 Drawing: Mike Rhodes won the 50/50 drawing. Bozo: Gerry Jean was nominated for Bozo for stating that he paid Kevin Connell off so he would not nominate him for Bozo. The next meeting will be Monday, May 13 at 7 p.m. The April meeting was adjourned by Mike Rhodes at 8 p.m. T.J. reunites Bozo and Gerry again for the month of April Tech Tip Dean Mizes service manager Spring is finally here! Be sure to at least check your tire PSI first. The PSI for your tires can be found on the frame label at the front of your bike. Check engine oil, when the engine is warmed up. Don t forget the roads still have that winter / sand stuff on it so be careful until we get some good rains to wash it off. Also, do a quick walk around to check your lights and tires. My surgery went very well and I m back on bikes which for me is HUGE! Not much in life means more to me than biking.

APRIL April Birthdays August Anniversaries April 9 Deb Auld April 14 Carol Ebersole April 17 Bryan Spurlock April 30 Barbara Wagner jmadog Jeff Maddox sales Posted on March 9, See more of Jeff s blog at Here I am cleaning my motorcycle. It s been awhile and it needs to be done. I ride all the time and just like your car and all the stuff you carry, it gets to the point where my saddle bags are full. Full to the point that I can t get the required loaf of bread in it when I am asked to bring it home after work. So as I sort through what is necessary and what isn t, I find that I m just a sneeze away from being a hoarder on two wheels. The very top is easy. A lighter pair of gloves, and a hooded sweatshirt. Check. Tie down bungee cords and rain suit, check. A hat for those horrible helmet hair days, and a pair of sunglasses. Broken of course. And another pair of gloves. And who couldn t use those? What is this, a multi-tool? Great! More bungee cords and a single glove. The left one must surely be in the other saddle bag. I mean, why would I keep a single glove? As for the bottom of the bag I find my insurance and registration card in a small zip-lock baggie which has a hole worn in it and some small things like sun screen and lip balm, and receipts for milk, bread, soda, chips and dog food! One bag down and one to go. A tool roll and bug cleaner. Micro fiber towel and a pair of sunglasses. Not my style and I m sure they re not mine. Probably a find on the road somewhere and too good to throw away. Tennis shoes and teryaki beef jerky, and it s still good. Another rain suit that has a story all to itself and wait, another bag of beef jerky that is not so good! That one was from a trip to Dodge City two years ago as it still had the receipt with it. Has it been that long? Not the trip the beef jerky. I thought it lasted forever. For a second there I thought I saw the end of time where canned goods and beef jerky both had the same expiration date. Nearing the bottom I find the source of a lot of discussions about memory loss and the onset of aging gracefully. A Blackberry cell phone. You guessed it. The trip to Dodge City where I swore I left it in the Hotel. After many calls to them and all but riding out there to prove them wrong, I have to admit they were right. It s funny how I knew every detail of the trip, where the phone was sitting in the room plugged into the charger, and the exact moment where the employees were making long phone calls to distant relatives while I was on the return trip home. But alas, phone records showed me otherwise. So it s been a couple of years since I ve sorted through the necessities of the road. Now I have a little more room for this season s travels, and soon I will mention the back story of the second rain suit. Melted leg and all! If I can remember it
