A number of blacked-out parts and numerous original-design styling components give the Vulcan 1700 Vaquero a hard, sporty image and its own distinct look. Further, it is loaded with high-grade cruising essentials, like Kawasaki s advanced brake system K-ACT ABS, Electronic Cruise Control, and a high-spec ipod-compatible audio system. Each offers 35 litres of storage space. Muscular front cowling and wind deflector, key bagger styling elements, offer protection from the wind and weather. Mounting the cowling to the frame rather than the handlebars contributes to light handling and minimises effect of wind buffeting. Twin tapered mufflers P.9 Long tapered mufflers complement the wide-andlow bagger styling. Electronic Throttle Valve System P.11 Electronic throttle valve (ETV) system delivers smooth, natural engine response. Belt drive P.14 Smooth and efficient belt drive uses carbon fibre as a tensile material. Slimmer than a Kevlar belt, it reduces weight and contributes to appearance. 6-speed transmission with overdrive P.15 6-speed transmission includes an overdrive gear for relaxed highway cruising. 1,700cc liquid-cooled, 4-stroke V-Twin P.14 Long-stroke engine based on that of the VN2000 delivers significant torque and power. 5 SPORTY, FLOWING BAGGER STYLE In typical bagger fashion, the Vulcan 1700 Vaquero follows a wide-and-low concept, its design flowing from the front of the bike to its integrated rear. While its muscular curvature is based on that of the Vulcan 1700 Voyager, it is much more than a Voyager with the top case removed; the Vaquero features a host of original-design components: engine shrouds, side covers, rear fender, mufflers even the side bags are new to the Vaquero. Further, numerous blacked-out parts contribute to a hard, sporty image. Both bodywork and engine covers received the meticulous attention to detail and exquisite craftsmanship expected of all Kawasaki cruisers. 2012MY VULCAN 1700 VAQUERO MODEL INFORMATION 5

6 Bodywork * Large, muscular front cowling is reminiscent of American sports cars in its sculpted, flowing design. Chromed headlamp cover contributes to the look. (Photo 1) 1 * Original engine shrouds tidy the front of the bike and help to give it a light, sporty look. (Photo 2) 2 * Louvre-style fog lamp covers can be replaced with accessory fog lamps. * Short-style smoked wind deflector contributes to the Vaquero s sporty image. * The elegantly shaped fuel tank tapers at the rear, contributing to the Vaquero s curvaceous figure, its lines flowing through the rest of the bike. The fuel tank s curves have constantly varying radii, giving the bike a dynamism that is both powerful and sexy. 8 Dashboard * Instrument layout and large round dials give the console a sporty automotive appearance. This image is reinforced by red-coloured rings on the dials, amber backlighting on the dials and instrument and audio LCD screens, and by the font used on the instrumentation. (Photo 6) 6 Side Bags * Capacious side bags are curved on the top and flat on the bottom a design that lends itself well to the bagger styling. 9 Engine * Basic engine structure has a great impact on a V-Twin engine s appearance. Using a semi-dry sump enabled the engine s long-stroke configuration without increasing its height. * The line created by the top of the airbox and the cylinder heads forms a curved lined that continues to flow through the bike. (Photo 8) 8 * Engine covers have curved upper surfaces. Their three-dimensional form adds volume and gives a quality appearance. * The matte black finish of the engine covers gives the bike a sporty image, and sharply contrasts the chromed mufflers and cylinder head covers. 10 TOP-END TOOLS FOR CRUISING COMFORT Like the flagship Vulcan 1700 Voyager, the Vulcan 1700 Vaquero comes fully loaded with advanced systems. K-ACT (Kawasaki Advanced Coactive-braking Technology) ABS ensures smooth braking control for confident, highly effective braking. Kawasaki s fully electronic throttle valve system offers smooth, natural engine response and easy starting in cold conditions. Electronic Cruise Control, multi-function instrumentation, and a high-spec audio system compatible with ipod and other systems are standard equipment. Coactive Braking (VN1700K only) * 2nd Generation K-ACT (Kawasaki Advanced Coactive-braking Technology) ABS enables riders to execute controlled, balanced braking. Designed to complement riders applied brake force, K-ACT ABS ensures ideal brake force distribution to maximise braking efficiency. * Rider actuation of the front brake lever and/or rear brake pedal causes brake fluid to act directly on caliper pistons per usual brake systems. Pressure sensors (one for the front brake master cylinder, and one for the rear) detect the amount of braking force the rider is applying. Then, taking into account the vehicle speed at time of initial brake application, the brake ECU determines the amount of corresponding brake force necessary for maximum braking efficiency. A motor in the control unit operates front and rear fluid pumps, increasing pressure to the front right caliper (based on rear pedal application) and/or rear caliper (based on front lever application) as necessary. (Illustration A) * Two more pressure sensors (one measuring front right caliper fluid pressure, the other measuring rear caliper fluid pressure) also provide feedback to the brake ECU. * K-ACT ABS also incorporates an anti-lock braking function to help prevent the wheels from locking up during hard braking in a straight line. * For maximum controllability in tight corners and when executing U-turns, K-ACT ABS s coactive function does not engage when braking is initiated at speeds below 12 mph (20 km/h). 11 ETV (Electronic Throttle Valve) System * Fully electronic throttle actuation system enables the ECU to control the volume of both the fuel (via fuel injectors) and the air (via throttle valves) delivered to the engine. Ideal fuel injection and throttle valve position results in smooth, natural engine response. (Photo 10) 10 A * Control of both fuel injection and airflow enables precise cold-engine idling speed control. * The simple system makes it easy to incorporate other systems, like Electronic Cruise Control (please see below). * Twisting the throttle grip actuates a throttle pulley on the throttle body. The Accelerator Position Sensor (APS), also located on the throttle body, sends a signal to the ECU, which then actuates the throttle valves via a DC motor. Throttle position is confirmed to the ECU by Throttle Position Sensor (TPS). (Illustration A) * Redundancy in the system (APS and TPS each send two sets of signals to the ECU) ensures some control is maintained in case of failure. * Because the throttle grip is connected to cables, the feel at the grip is like a standard cableoperated throttle. 12 Electronic Cruise Control * Operation of the Electronic Cruise Control is conveniently from the right handle. (Photo 12) * The system can be activated between 30 mph (47 km/h) and 85 mph (137 km/h) in 3rd gear or above. * Operating the brake lever, clutch lever or rear brake pedal causes the Electronic Cruise Control to be disengaged. Closing the throttle beyond the zero-throttle position is another instinctive way to disengage the system. 12 Multi-function instrumentation and high-spec audio system with superior ipod-compatibility * Instrumentation and audio functions can be fully controlled by handlebar switches. The switches were designed for gloves-on operation. * Multi-function LCD display in the centre of the instrument console is controlled by switches on the right handle. Features include a gear position indicator, clock, odometer, dual trip meters, remaining range and average fuel consumption. 13 * Pushing the S switch to the left ( MODE-A ) toggles the middle display between RANGE (remaining cruising range) and AVERAGE (average fuel consumption). Pushing the S switch to the right ( MODE-B ) toggles the upper display from ODO to TRIP-A to TRIP-B and back. (Photo 16) 16 * High-spec audio system features twin 40 W speakers, radio (FM/AM/WX) and compatibility with an ipod, XM tuner or CB radio unit. 14 WINNING FEATURES FROM THE VULCAN 1700 Numerous features were carried over from the Vulcan 1700 Series. The 1,700cc engine, offering both significant power and torque and superior passing performance, is mounted in a frame designed for light weight and light handling. And like its siblings, the Vaquero s compact package offers ease of manoeuvrability. Powerful 1,700cc V-Twin engine * Long-stroke, liquid cooled, SOHC, 8-valve 1,700cc V-Twin engine was designed to deliver high levels of torque. Bore and stroke measure 102 x 104 mm. * Valve system uses a SOHC arrangement instead of OHV for more direct engine feel and easier merging onto freeways. * Large capacity airboxes are located on either side of the engine. * Extremely smooth casting cores for the intake manifold enable a very smooth finish without machining. The extremely smooth surface of the intake manifold helps prevent fuel spray build-up from occurring, resulting in more linear power delivery and smoother throttle response. * Semi-dry sump allowed the crankshaft to be lowered, enabling a longer stroke without increasing engine height. * Both pistons are connected to a single crankpin. Primary balance is satisfied care of two counter-balance shafts. * Small-diameter iridium spark plugs reach deep into the combustion chamber for high combustion efficiency, especially at low-load operation (near idling). * Belt final drive is quiet and efficient and helps reduce maintenance chores. Using carbon fibre instead of Kevlar as a tensile material, the belt offers high strength (tensile strength is 40% greater than a Kevlar belt of the same size) with a slim size and light weight. 15 Superior passing performance * Engine tuning offers superior acceleration in the km/h range. Even in overdrive, the engine pulls strongly in this speed range, facilitating overtaking at highway speeds. Light handling * Designed from the start to be as light and slim as possible, the frame minimises the number of forged parts and trims any unnecessary meat. The only forged parts (the down-tube joint, engine brackets, side-stand bracket, rear fender/shock absorber bracket) are areas that require additional strength. * Shorter distance between the seat and frame head pipe facilitates handling at low speeds, especially when executing U-turns. 6-speed transmission with overdrive * 6th gear is an overdrive gear, contributing to stress-free riding and better fuel economy when travelling at highway speeds. Long range * 20 litre fuel tank offers a substantial range, helping to minimise fuel stops when out on the open road. * Mounting the front cowling to the frame rather than the handlebars contributes to light handling when manoeuvring at low speeds. 16 Convenient storage Ergonomics * Side bags are sealed and lockable, with a volume of 35 litres each. (Photo 18-19) 18 * Sculpted seat designed for both comfort and an easy reach to the ground. (Photo 20) * Upright riding position contributes to all-day riding comfort. * * Up front, lockable glove boxes provide a handy place for storing small items and accessories. * Dual adjustable rear air-shocks ensure a comfortable ride feel. The air pressure in the shocks can be adjusted for different road and loading conditions. (Remote air valves are located under the seat for easy access.) 17 ADDITIONAL FEATURES * Ignition switch allows on-position key removal, preventing key bunches from damaging the luxurious chrome finish around the ignition area while the bike is in operation. Turning the ignition switch collar to the OFF position turns the engine off and necessitates re-insertion of the key to restart. ACC position allows accessories to be used while the engine is off. * ACG with rare earth magnets has reserve of 155 W for powering accessories. Optional 12 V socket can be installed below the right-side glove box to provide a power source for optional accessories. * Front engine guards help protect the bike s bodywork in the case of a stationary fall. * Two helmet holders are located under the seat.
