CONCEPT AND ADVANTAGES The supercharged Ninja H2 was created to offer riders something they had never experienced. But Kawasaki s answer to the ultimate motorcycle was merely the opening act. Now, for their second supercharger challenge Kawasaki brings the unique sensory experience of a supercharged engine to the sport tourer category with the new Ninja H2 SX and Ninja H2 SX SE. Where the Ninja H2 and the sensational Ninja H2R upon which it is based were born from a pure pursuit of performance, the new Ninja H2 SX was designed from the beginning for real-world applications. Its Balanced Supercharged Engine was developed for everyday street-riding situations, offering an output stronger than the H2 in the low-mid range combined with superb fuel efficiency. Its versatile engine character enables relaxed long-distance riding, easy manageability at slow speeds, and when called upon the exhilarating acceleration that only a supercharged engine can deliver. CONCEPT SUPERCHARGE YOUR JOURNEY: KAWASAKI S SECOND SC CHALLENGE IS A SUPERCHARGED LIGHTWEIGHT SPORT TOURER Thanks to its light weight in standard trim, the Ninja H2 SX weighs only 18 kg more than the Ninja H2 the Ninja H2 SX has a power-to-weight ratio between that of the Ninja H2 and Ninja ZX- 14R. The formidable acceleration potential that results is coupled with a high level of touring comfort care of a relaxed, sporty riding position, superb ride comfort, a blend of reassuring high-speed stability and agile handling, a host of touring features, Electronic Cruise Control, and Kawasaki s latest IMU-equipped electronics package. Its Ninja H2-derived trellis frame also accommodates a passenger and luggage, allowing riders to share their experience. Riders can choose from two model variations: the standard Ninja H2 SX; or the SE-model, which offers an even higher level of 2

CONCEPT AND ADVANTAGES quality, and additional equipment that includes Kawasaki s first TFT LCD meter and LED cornering lights. Whether you enjoy winding through the mountains, riding across the plains, or just heading down the highway, the Ninja H2 SX will forever change your touring experience. Supercharge YOUR journey with the new Ninja H2 SX. ADVANTAGES 1 EXPANDING THE NINJA H2 FAMILY Following the performance-focused Ninja H2R and Ninja H2, the sport touring Ninja H2 SX illustrates the wide potential of KHI s inhouse developed supercharged engine technology. 3

CONCEPT AND ADVANTAGES ADVANTAGES 3 SPORT TOURING PERFORMANCE Complementing the everyday usability and supercharged acceleration of the highly efficient Balanced Supercharged Engine, the Ninja H2 SX offers reassuring stability at highway speed, superb ride comfort, numerous convenience features and a host of sport tourer equipment ensuring that it is the mightiest sport tourer on the market. New Trellis Frame: Tandem-, Pannier-Capable The Ninja H2 SX features an innovative trellis frame like the Ninja H2, but to be able to accommodate a passenger and luggage, the frame needed to be completely redesigned. Its 195 kg payload is comparable to that of the Ninja And increased rigidity and a longer wheelbase deliver the stability for riding at highway speed with panniers, while a 30 o steering angle facilitates lowspeed manoeuvres. Full-Fairing: Sportiness & Wind Protection Full-fairing bodywork contributes to both wind protection and the Ninja H2 SX s sporty looks. The full fairing was possible thanks to the highly efficient engine, which gives off significantly less heat than that of the highperformance Ninja H2. The bodywork strategically shields the rider without being too large, balancing rider comfort and aerodynamics. On the SE model, a large windscreen further protects the rider from windblast, offering even greater touring comfort. 4

TECHNICAL DETAILS: ENGINE ENGINE Balanced Supercharged Engine While the base design starts with the supercharged engine of the Ninja H2, the numerous changes necessary to achieve the balance of power and fuel efficiency desired for the Ninja H2 SX essentially resulted in a new engine. The Balanced Supercharged Engine delivers both exhilarating acceleration and superb fuel efficiency (25% better than that of the Ninja H2). Key to achieving this was increasing the engine s thermal efficiency, which was accomplished by significantly raising the compression ratio. Other changes to the supercharger, combustion chamber, cams, and intake and exhaust systems followed. * Air supplied to the supercharger enters via a single Ram Air intake in the left side of the upper cowl. The total frontal area is approximately 80% that of the Ninja H2, matching the airflow requirements of the Balanced Supercharged Engine. (Photo 1) * Ram Air duct was designed to take the fresh air to the supercharger in as straight a line as possible, contributing to the increased supercharger efficiency. (Photo 2) 1 2 * Like on the Ninja H2, a sound hole in the intake duct makes it easier to hear the supercharger s characteristic chirping. 5

TECHNICAL DETAILS: ENGINE * The Ninja H2 SX A features an original impeller, also designed in-house. While its size is the same, the shape and angle of the blades were optimised for the 200 PS, highefficiency engine. The supercharger settings (rpm and airflow volume for maximum efficiency) were also optimised. (Illustration A) The specifications mentioned here apply to and have been achieved by production models under standard operating conditions. We intend only to give a fair description of the vehicle and its performance capabilities but these specifications may not apply to every machine supplied for sale. * Impeller is formed from a forged aluminium block using a 5-axis CNC machining centre to ensure high precision and high durability. The 69 mm impeller features 6 blades at the tip, expanding to 12 blades at the base. Grooves etched into the blade surfaces help direct the airflow. * The supercharger is driven by a planetary gear train, which runs off the crankshaft. Designing the gear train using technology from Kawasaki s Aerospace Company resulted in a very compact unit, with minimal power loss. * Gear train increases the impeller speed to 9.2x the crank speed (1.15x step gear x 8x planetary gear). * Intake chamber is ideally shaped for high efficiency and high engine output. Optimised volume (6 litres >> 5 litres) and revised chamber construction contributes to an overall supercharger efficiency greater than that of the Ninja H2. (Illustration B) * Being constructed of highly rigid aluminium offers two advantages: 1) aluminium offers excellent surface heat dissipation, helping to keep the intake air cool; 2) the rigid structure helps to ensure airtight performance with the supercharged air pressure (approximately 2 atm). * Changing the intake chamber manufacturing process from a gravity casting to die-cast saves 500 g in weight. * As air enters the intake chamber, it passes through a newly added diffuser. This contributes to increased supercharger efficiency, which helps prevent engine knocking, as well as benefiting engine performance and fuel efficiency. * Intake funnel lengths were optimised for the low-mid performance and high fuel efficiency. The lengths are uneven: funnels 1-4 are shorter than 2-3. * The Ninja H2 s intake funnel nets are replaced with a single net at the end of the diffuser. The net helps to smooth the airflow, while the simplified design saves weight. B 6

TECHNICAL DETAILS: ENGINE * A blow-off valve controlled by the ECU regulates pressure gain inside the intake chamber. When the throttle is closed suddenly, the ECU releases excess pressure from the chamber to prevent impeller surging. Valve operation response is better than that of the Ninja H2, enabling an optimum boost pressure to be maintained while contributing to power feeling and throttle response. * Electronic Throttle Valves enable the ECU to control the volume of both the fuel (via fuel injectors) and the air (via throttle valves) delivered to the engine. Ideal fuel injection and throttle valve position results in smooth, natural engine response and the ideal engine output. The system also makes a significant contribution to reduced emissions. * Smaller-diameter (ø50 mm >> ø40 mm) throttle valves optimise the airflow rate, contributing to low-mid range torque and high fuel efficiency. * A two-stage machining process for the cylinder head (race technology developed for the Ninja ZX-10R) is used to form the throat of the intake ports. The valve seat area is bored twice: once along the same path as the throat; then again for the valve seats. The result is smoother intake airflow, which helps reduce intake loss, and translates to increased performance. * Cam profiles with shorter intake (-8 o ) and exhaust (-12 o ) duration (and shorter overlap) match the reduced airflow requirements of everyday street riding, contributing to the low-mid range focused performance as well as increased fuel efficiency. * Intake and exhaust ports were revised to suit the reduced airflow. Low-mid performance and fuel efficiency benefit. (Illustration C) * Like the Ninja H2, a dummy head is used during the cylinder honing process. The more precise circularity and cylindricity that result allow the use of low-tension piston rings, which helps reduce mechanical loss. * Significantly increased compression ratio (8.5:1 >> 11.2:1) enables increased thermal efficiency and greatly contributes to increased fuel efficiency. A smaller squish (now a mere 1 mm, compared to the 4 mm on the Ninja H2) contributes to improved combustion, which also helps prevent engine knocking. C 7

TECHNICAL DETAILS: ENGINE * Pistons feature D revised crowns, contributing to the increased compression ratio. The pistons are cast pieces cast pistons offer better strength than forged pistons for the very high temperatures generated by the supercharged engine. A unique casting process (similar to forging process) sees unnecessary material removed and hollows created to achieve the ideal thickness. This enables a light weight on par with forged pistons, while ensuring the strength necessary to cope with the increased cylinder pressure. (Illustration D) * With the more efficient combustion, less heat is given off, allowing the pistons to be cooled by single piston jets (instead of the dual jets used on the Ninja H2). As a result, the oil pump can turn at a slower rate, reducing friction loss and leading to increased performance and fuel efficiency, and the engine s oil volume could be reduced (by 500 ml), contributing to 300 g in weight savings. * Dual secondary balancers ensure extremely low engine vibration. Balancer position and weight were optimised to minimise unwanted secondary vibration caused by the reciprocating pistons. * Exhaust features smaller-diameter header pipes (ø45 mm >> ø42.8 mm) and a 360 o header arrangement (1-4, 2-3) with connector pipes, contributing to low-mid range torque and high fuel efficiency. * Pre-chamber has a double-wall construction (triple-wall construction on the Ninja H2), contributing to weight savings while keeping exhaust noise to a minimum. * More compact silencer (10 L >> 7 L) with three internal chambers (two on the Ninja H2) saves approximately 2 kg. The lighter silencer contributes to mass centralisation, and by extension to improved handling. (Photo 3) * The stylish silencer features a reverse-taper (thinner at the rear) design with a die-cast end-cap. * Catalysers relocated from the silencer to just aft of the collector pipe, where they can warm up more quickly. This promotes better emission control when the engine is still cold. As a result, retarding ignition can be minimised and fuel efficiency is improved. 3 8

TECHNICAL DETAILS: ENGINE Dog-ring Transmission Like the Ninja H2, the Ninja H2 SX features a dog-ring type transmission. The kind of transmission commonly found in MotoGP or Formula 1, it facilitates smooth, quick shifting. Gear ratios were optimised for a sport tourer. * Unlike a standard motorcycle transmission in which shift forks slide the gears into position, with a dog-ring transmission the gears all stay in place. Only the dog rings move, sliding into position to engage the desired gear. * Input gears are fixed onto the input shaft, whereas the output gears spin freely on needle bearings. Once engaged, the output gear (previously spinning freely) is then able to transfer power to the output shaft. * Because the dog rings are much lighter than transmission gears, this type of transmission offers a much lighter shift effort. Shift touch is also improved, and a much shorter shift time is possible which facilitates quick acceleration. * Longer primary gear contributes to the Balanced Supercharged Engine s superb fuel efficiency while helping to reduce the load of its even greater torque on the transmission gears. 1st and 2nd gears are also longer, contributing to easier engine manageability in everyday riding situations. * Transmission oil jets (first used in a Kawasaki motorcycle on the 2015 Ninja H2/H2R) enable a compact transmission with high durability. Hydraulic Assist & Slipper Clutch: Light Lever Operation A high-quality hydraulic clutch offers less maintenance, ensuring the initial touch condition can be maintained. And the lighter lever operation thanks to the clutch s assist function contributes to reduced rider fatigue when street riding. * Assist & Slipper Clutch uses two types of cams: an assist cam and a slipper cam, offering two functions not available on a standard clutch. * When the engine is driving the rear wheel the assist cam functions as a self-servo mechanism, pulling the clutch hub and operating plate together to compress the clutch plates. This allows the total clutch spring load to be reduced, resulting in a lighter clutch lever pull when operating the clutch. * When excessive engine braking occurs as a result of quick downshifts (or an accidental downshift) the slipper cam comes into play, forcing the clutch hub and operating plate apart. This relieves pressure on the clutch plates to reduce back-torque and help prevent the rear tyre from hopping and skidding. * Aluminium clutch hub material provides a weight savings of approximately 1 kg compared to its steel counterpart. 9

TECHNICAL DETAILS: CHASSIS CHASSIS Trellis Frame The Ninja H2 SX features an innovative trellis frame like the Ninja H2, but to be able to accommodate a passenger and luggage, the frame needed to be completely redesigned. Its 195 kg payload is comparable to that of the Ninja And increased rigidity and a longer wheelbase deliver the stability for riding at highway speed with panniers, while a 30 o steering angle facilitates low-speed manoeuvres. * Using a trellis frame construction offered an elegant, lightweight solution to meeting the performance requirements for the chassis. It offers a balance of stiffness and flexibility that enables a very high level of stability while being able to handle external disturbances at highway speed. * Kawasaki s advanced dynamic rigidity analysis was used to ensure optimum rigidity with light weight. * Pipe diameter, thickness and bend of each piece of the trellis frame were carefully selected to obtain the necessary stiffness for that part of the frame. The trellis pieces are made primarily from high-tensile steel. * Frame s steering head was moved forward 15 mm, enabling a wider steering angle (27 o >> 30 o ) that facilitates low-speed manoeuvres. * Tilting the engine forward 2 o helps keep the centre of gravity low, which contributes to overall handling as well as to stability at highway speed. * Stronger, longer rear frame enables a 195 kg payload (vs 105 kg on the Ninja H2) more than enough to accommodate 2-up riding with luggage on the highway. * Like the Ninja H2, the Ninja H2 SX features a Swingarm Mounting Plate. This innovative chassis mechanism allows the engine to act as part of the frame. Swingarm Mounting Plate bolts to the back of the engine. The swingarm pivot shaft goes through this plate, essentially allowing the swingarm to be mounted directly to the engine. Thanks to the Swingarm Mounting Plate, the frame does not need to use cross members for stability, contributing to the frame s light weight. * Also like the Ninja H2, the Ninja H2 SX features a single-sided swingarm. Designed for high rigidity and light weight, the angular cross-section swingarm is composed of aluminium forged and pressed parts. For the Ninja H2 SX, the swingarm was lengthened 15 mm, contributing to the longer wheelbase. (Photo 4) 4 10

TECHNICAL DETAILS: CHASSIS * 25 mm longer than that of the Ninja H2, the 1,480 mm wheelbase contributes to the stability necessary for riding at highway speed with panniers. * Weight savings efforts keep overall weight down to 256 kg for the standard model (260 kg for the SE model). Weighing 13 kg less than the Ninja ZX-14R (or, only 18 kg more than the Ninja H2) gives the Ninja H2 SX a great advantage in acceleration performance and nimble handling in the hills. Suspension Supersport-sourced suspension delivers a combination of ride comfort and sport performance ideal for street riding and touring. Both front and rear suspension are fully adjustable, allowing riders to make adjustments to suit riding style and conditions. And a remote rear preload adjuster greatly facilitates making changes to accommodate a passenger and/or luggage. * ø43 mm inverted fork is fully adjustable for compression and rebound damping and preload. Settings chosen for the Ninja H2 SX ensure a balance of ride comfort and sport performance. (Photo 5) 5 * KYB fully adjustable mono-shock rear suspension from the Ninja H2 offers superb stability. The rear shock is gas-charged with a piggy-back reservoir, ensuring stable damping performance. Rear shock can be adjusted for compression damping (high/low-speed), rebound damping and preload. Shock settings also contribute to the balance of ride comfort and sport performance. * Top of the rear shock mounts to the Swingarm Mounting Plate. (Again, no need for frame cross-members.) * The bottom of the rear shock is mounted via revised New Uni-Trak linkage that offers excellent feedback regarding the rear tyre s grip condition to the rider. The linkage is situated below the swingarm and also mounts to the Swingarm Mounting Plate. * Remote preload adjuster an indispensable feature on a sport tourer makes it easy to adjust settings without tools. (Photo 6) 6 11

TECHNICAL DETAILS: CHASSIS Brakes/Wheels/Tyres * ø320 mm brake discs, radial-mount front calipers and a radial-pump brake master cylinder offer impressive braking performance and superb feel. (Photo 7) * A ø250 mm disc with twin-piston caliper slows the rear. * On the SE model, steel-braided lines ensure more direct transfer of hydraulic fluid, contributing to brake feel, while adding to the bike s highquality image. * Supersport-style high-precision brake management system is standard equipment on the Ninja H2 SX. Please see KIBS (Kawasaki Intelligent anti-lock Brake System) below. * For added braking reassurance, the Ninja H2 SX features ABS. * Cast aluminium wheels designed specifically for the Ninja H2 SX feature the same star-pattern 5-spoke design first seen on the Ninja H2. Based on analysis and testing, optimised rigidity balance contributes to performance at highway speeds, whether riding alone or with a passenger. * On the SE model, machining on the spokes and wheel rim tape add to the high-quality image. 7 * Screw-in type, aluminium side-facing tyre air valves handle the wheels high-speed revolution. The side-facing valves also ensure easy maintenance with the large-diameter front brake discs. * Front (120/70ZR17M/C) and rear tyre sizes (190/55ZR17M/C 10 mm slimmer than that of the Ninja H2) were selected as ideal for streetriding and touring use. Ergonomics The riding position for the Ninja H2 SX was designed with both sport riding and comfort in mind. Not as far forwardleaning as the Ninja ZX- 14R, and not as upright as the Ninja 1000, the Ninja H2 SX s riding position offers a more relaxed bend for both the elbows and knees than the Ninja ZX-14R. The position is comfortable for both in-town riding and long touring, while still enabling the rider to enjoy sporty riding in the hills. 12

TECHNICAL DETAILS: CHASSIS * Full-fairing bodywork offers a balance of rider comfort and aerodynamics, strategically shielding the rider without being so large it causes adverse drag at higher speeds. With the standard screen, the rider can escape any head buffeting by leaning forward slightly; on the SE model a large windscreen further protects the rider from windblast, allowing the rider to sit up straighter for even greater touring comfort. (Photo 8) 8 * Both the front and rear seats deliver the comfort you would expect of a sport tourer. As a sport tourer the seat height could not be made too low or it would adversely affect handling. Instead, the slim design of the seat enables both superb comfort and an easy reach to the ground to be realised. (Photo 10) 10 * Realising high-speed performance with an upright riding position is difficult to achieve, but thanks to the Ninja H2 SX s superb wind protection the riding position more comfortable than that of the Ninja ZX-14R was possible. (Photo 9) 9 13

TECHNICAL DETAILS: CHASSIS * Two front seats were designed: a Comfort Seat that offers taller riders a relaxed knee bend and thicker urethane cushioning; and a Low Seat (15 mm lower) that prioritises an easy reach to the ground. Seat height is 835 mm for the Comfort Seat; 820 mm for the Low Seat. (Which seat is fit standard varies by market.) (Photos 11-12) * The rear seat offers a wide, flat surface, ensuring pillion comfort. * On the SE model, high-grade two-tone (leather/suede) seats with double-stitching are standard for both the front (whether Comfort or Low) and rear seats, adding to its exclusivity. * Ergonomically designed tandem grips add to pillion comfort, and are formed from high-strength plastic, contributing to weight savings. (Approximately 1 kg lighter than the tandem grips on the Ninja 1000.) * Rubber pads on the footpegs contribute to ride comfort. Clean-mount Pannier System The mounting system for the accessory panniers allows the panniers to be attached and removed very simply, contributing to increased convenience. Seamlessly integrating the panniers with the rear of the bike, the cleanmount system positions the panniers close to the bike centreline, and, thanks to its clean clutterfree design, ensures the rear of the bike still looks good with the panniers removed. High-speed testing on Germany s Autobahn ensures stable operation with panniers. 14

TECHNICAL DETAILS: CHASSIS * The mounting system positions the panniers close to the bike s centreline. This makes them look wellintegrated with the rear of the bike and facilitates navigating narrow spaces without worrying about the width of the panniers. (Photos 13-14) * Accessory GIVI panniers (28 litres, 5 kg max each) can each hold a full-face helmet. (Photo 15) * The panniers are colour-matched to the body of the bike and have the Kawasaki logo stamped into their covers, ensuring a quality image. * One-key system means that the panniers are conveniently unlocked and removed with the ignition key. 15 * Mounting the panniers is as simple as sliding them onto the slots on the grips and the pannier supports integrated into tandem footpeg stays. * Because the elegant mounting system does not use cumbersome mounting brackets, the rear of the bike looks clean and sharp when the panniers are removed. 15

TECHNICAL DETAILS: CHASSIS Aggressive Styling As the world s only supercharged sport tourer, the Ninja H2 SX needed to look the part. Blending aggressive Kawasaki styling that exudes an air of performance, with high-class touches and an exquisite attention to detail, the Ninja H2 SX s arresting design sets it apart, declaring to all that it is a class of its own. * A front face styled after the Ninja H2 points to its supercharged roots and instantly communicates that this is no ordinary sport tourer. (Photo 16) 16 * Like the Ninja H2, the Kawasaki River Mark emblem is proudly displayed on the upper cowl an indication that the Ninja H2 SX is the mightiest sport tourer on the market, and a reflection of the high level of performance, comfort and quality that it offers. (Photo 17) * Full fairing bodywork, which contributes to the bike s sporty image, was possible thanks to the highly efficient engine, which gives off significantly less heat than that of the high-performance Ninja H2. * High velocity lines (the forward-slanted lines traced by the side cowls and fins, as well as the tail cowl and muffler) contribute to the aggressive styling, and suggest the high speed at which riders of the Ninja H2 SX can travel in comfort. * Holes in the fairing offer glimpses of the supercharged engine and the intake duct hints of the performance housed within. They also help extract heat from the engine compartment, contributing to rider comfort. * Thematic quadruple fins symbolic of the supercharged In-Line Four engine on the side fairings contribute to the dynamic image of the side of the bike. * From headlamp to taillight, all the lights on the Ninja H2 SX even the licence plate bulb are LED

TECHNICAL DETAILS: CHASSIS * Bright, compact LED headlamp, styled after that of the Ninja H2, is positioned low, at the front of the upper cowl, contributing to the cowl s intense design. Located above the headlamp, the LED position lamps give a horn-like impression. * On the SE model, LED cornering lights, sets of three lights built into each side of the fairing, help illuminate the road when cornering at night. Each of the three lights has a fixed direction and is activated based on lean angle. As the bike leans over, the lamps come on in order, creating a wider path of light in the direction the bike is heading. (Photo 18, Illustration E) 18 E * Original LED taillight displays a dual H pattern when the position lamp is on. (Photo 19) * Like the Ninja H2, LED rear turn signals featuring an inner lens, surface texturing and surface-emitting LEDs contribute to the bike s high-quality image. High-Class Instrumentation: Multi-Function TFT Colour LCD Meter (SE) The advanced, high-tech design of the instrumentation contributes to the Ninja H2 SX s flagship-level quality. The analogue-style tachometer is complemented by a full digital LCD screen (STD model), or Kawasaki s first use of a high-grade full colour TFT LCD screen (SE model). The SE model s screen enables information to be displayed graphically. Two selectable display modes (Touring, Sport) allow riders to prioritise the information they want to see depending on the kind of riding they are doing at the time. 19 * Aerodynamically shaped mirrors offer a clear view of the rear even when the accessory panniers are fitted. LED turn signals are built into the mirror housings. 17

TECHNICAL DETAILS: CHASSIS * The instrumentation design combines a full digital LCD screen with an analogue-style tachometer. * On the standard 20 model, LCD screen features a negative display (white characters on a black background), contributing to the high-quality image. In addition to the digital speedometer and gear position indicator, display functions include: fuel gauge, odometer, dual trip meters, current mileage, average mileage, fuel consumption, bank angle display and max bank angle recording function (possible thanks feedback from the Inertial Measurement Unit), coolant temperature, boost indicator, boost (intake air chamber) temperature, clock, Economical Riding Indicator, and IMU indicator. (Photo 20) * On the SE model, 21 the high-grade full colour display features TFT (thin-film transistor) technology to ensure a level of visibility previously unattainable. The screen s background colour is selectable (black or white), and screen brightness adjusts automatically to suit available light. In 22 addition to scrollable multi-function windows, two display modes offer riders a choice of how they want their information presented. - Touring Mode: easyto-read, calm layout offers a greater amount of information at-a-glance than the STD model. - Sport Mode: important information is prioritised and presented graphically for easy digestion. Throttle and front brake application, G-force (based on feedback from the IMU) unique to Sport Mode are illustrated visually rather than numerically, as is the boost indicator. (Photos 21-22) * Handle control switches put all mode selection and display options at the rider s fingertips. 18

TECHNICAL DETAILS: CHASSIS Other Convenient Features * Front seat can be easily removed with the pull of a lever located under the rear seat, greatly facilitating access to the battery. * Under-seat storage offers space to keep small items. * Convenient hooks built into the heel guards of passenger footpegs facilitate tying down luggage with bungee cords or nets. 19

TECHNICAL DETAILS: ELECTRONICS ELECTRONICS KCMF (Kawasaki Cornering Management Function): Total Engine & Chassis Management Package The strength of Kawasaki s cutting-edge electronics has always been the highly sophisticated programming that, using minimal hardware, gives the ECU an accurate real-time picture of what the chassis is doing. Kawasaki s proprietary dynamic modelling program makes skilful use of the magic formula tyre model as it examines changes in multiple parameters, enabling it to take into account changing road and tyre conditions. Using the latest evolution of this advanced modelling software and feedback from a compact Bosch IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit), KCMF monitors engine and chassis parameters throughout the corner from entry, through the apex, to corner exit modulating brake force and engine power to facilitate smooth transition from acceleration to braking and back again, and to assist riders in tracing their intended line through the corner. * On the Ninja H2 SX, KCMF oversees the following systems: - KTRC (including traction and wheel lift control) - KLCM* - KIBS (including pitching and corner braking control) - Kawasaki Engine Brake Control *SE-only feature Enhanced Chassis Orientation Awareness: Bosch IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) The use of Bosch s compact IMU allows an additional layer of precision to be added to the already high-level KTRC, KLCM and KIBS base systems. * IMU enables inertia along 6 DOF (degrees of freedom) to be monitored. Acceleration along longitudinal, transverse and vertical axes, plus roll rate and pitch rate are measured. The yaw rate is calculated by the ECU using Kawasaki original software. * Additional feedback from the IMU gives an even clearer real-time picture of chassis orientation than the programming of the previous systems was able to predict. * In addition to more precise management, feedback from the IMU enables KIBS to incorporate an additional function. Corner braking control assists riders in tracing their intended line through the corner. * Bosch s latest IMU is highly compact and very lightweight, weighing only 40 g. 20

TECHNICAL DETAILS: ELECTRONICS KTRC (Kawasaki Traction Control) Three modes cover a wide range of riding conditions, offering either enhanced sport riding performance or the peace of mind under certain conditions to negotiate slippery surfaces with confidence. Kawasaki s advanced modelling software, complemented by feedback from the IMU, delivers precise control. * Riders can choose from three modes. Mode 1 prioritises forward acceleration. Mode 2 offers a balance between acceleration performance and rider reassurance. Mode 3 provides rider reassurance by facilitating smooth riding on slippery surfaces. Riders may also elect to turn the system off. * In Mode 1, highly sophisticated programming allows a degree of slip a certain amount of slip is required to maximise acceleration. The ideal slip ratio varies according to conditions. The system looks at a number of parameters to get an accurate real-time picture of what is going on: front and rear wheel speed (slippage) and various engine, machine and rider input parameters are monitored. * Because the sophisticated software bases its dynamic analysis on the chassis orientation relative to the track surface (rather than relative to a horizontal plane), it is able to take into account corner camber, gradient, etc, and adapt accordingly. * Using complex analysis, the system is able to predict when traction conditions are about to become unfavourable. By acting before slippage exceeds the range for optimal traction, drops in power can be minimised, resulting in ultra-smooth operation. * The system confirms conditions every 5 milliseconds and uses ignition cut and airflow control (via the electronic throttle valves), enabling extremely quick reaction. * In Modes 2 and 3 (each progressively more intrusive) the same logic and control as in Mode 1 is employed during normal operation. However, when excessive rear wheel spin is detected, ignition timing is retarded and engine output is reduced to a level that allows the rear wheel to regain grip. Fine control results in a very natural feeling: engagement is smooth, on/off transition is smooth, and stability is maintained during extended operation. * In Mode 3 (the most intrusive), KTRC effectively enables riders to negotiate both short slippery patches (train tracks or manhole covers) and extended stretches of bad road (wet pavement, cobblestone, gravel) with confidence. Wheel spin is also limited when starting on a slippery surface. * The system is also able to distinguish between wheel lift resulting from strong acceleration, which is smooth, and other types of wheel lift. In Mode 1, assuming the rider s intention to accelerate, the system allows torque-induced wheel lift in so far as acceptable acceleration is maintained. Other wheel lift triggers system intervention. In Mode 3, the system acts to supress all wheel lift, contributing to rider reassurance. In Mode 2, the level of intervention is between that of Mode 1 and Mode 3. * With feedback from the IMU, wheel lift control can be extremely precise. In addition to smoother operation, the system limits wheel lift to a level optimised for street-use, taking into account the potential weight of a passenger and luggage. 21

TECHNICAL DETAILS: ELECTRONICS * By default, KTRC is always ON when the engine is started. (The mode will be the same as when the engine was turned off, or in Mode 1 if the system had been turned off.) To ride with KTRC off, riders must consciously turn the system OFF (using the mode button on the left grip). KLCM (Kawasaki Launch Control Mode) (SE) Designed to assist the rider by optimising acceleration from a stop, KLCM electronically controls engine output to prevent wheelspin and minimise wheel lift when launching. KLCM should only be used under closed-course conditions; do not use KLCM during everyday riding. * Standard equipment on the Ninja H2 SX SE, this system allows the rider to launch from a stop with the throttle held wide open. * With the clutch lever pulled in and the system activated, engine speed is limited to 6,250 min -1 even with the throttle held open. * Once the clutch lever is released to engage the clutch, engine speed is allowed to increase, but power is regulated to prevent wheelspin and help keep the front wheel on the ground. * The system disengages automatically at 150 km/h or when the rider shifts into 3 rd gear. KIBS (Kawasaki Intelligent anti-lock Brake System) Kawasaki s supersportgrade high-precision brake management system is standard equipment on the Ninja H2 SX. This is the same base system used on the Ninja H2 and Ninja ZX- 10R, with programming and settings revised to suit the street performance parameters of the Ninja H2 SX. * KIBS is a multi-sensing system, using the input from numerous sources. In addition to front and rear wheel speed sensors (standard for any ABS system), KIBS also monitors front caliper hydraulic pressure and various information from the engine ECU (throttle position, engine speed, clutch actuation and gear position). * High-precision brake pressure control enables the system to avoid reduced brake performance due to excessive pressure drops, allows lever feel to be maintained when KIBS is active, and ensures ABS pulses feel smooth (not heavy). 22

TECHNICAL DETAILS: ELECTRONICS * High-precision brake pressure control also offers a number of sport riding benefits: 1. Rear lift suppression 2. Minimal kickback during operation 3. Accounting for back-torque * When braking from high speeds, the rear may lift as weight transfers forward. By monitoring front caliper hydraulic pressure, KIBS is able to regulate pressure increases, reducing the tendency of the rear to lift. This happens in two situations: 1) Before conditions require ABS intervention, KIBS prevents the pressure from increasing too quickly, thus suppressing rear lift, and 2) after ABS has decreased pressure to prevent wheel lock, KIBS pressure is not returned too quickly, preventing a sudden increase that could induce rear lift. Suppressing this tendency contributes to enhanced braking stability. * Precise control of front caliper pressure also enables KIBS to minimise kickback during operation. Pressure is increased in small amounts and slips are minimised, resulting in a very smooth operation feeling. This of course translates to minimal distraction to the rider during sport riding. * By accounting for back-torque, KIBS is able to offer increased rear brake control during downshifts. KIBS parameters include throttle position, clutch actuation and gear position, allowing the system to recognise engine back-torque from downshifting or getting off the gas at high rpm. Rear wheel slip due to engine braking often triggers ABS action on standard systems, but by preventing unnecessary ABS intervention in these situations, KIBS enables rear brake control to be maintained. * With feedback from the IMU, KIBS is able to incorporate an additional function: corner braking control. Should riders use the brakes beyond the entrance to a turn (i.e. trail braking) or mid-corner (e.g. to avoid an obstacle), brake force is modulated to counter the tendency of the bike to stand up under braking. This assists riders in tracing their intended line through the corner instead of running wide. Kawasaki Engine Brake Control The Kawasaki Engine Brake Control system allows riders to select the amount of engine braking they prefer. * When the system is activated, the engine braking effect is reduced, providing less interference when sport riding. Power Modes: Full, Middle and Low * In addition to Full power mode, the Ninja H2 SX comes with two additional modes (Middle, Low), allowing riders to select power delivery to suit preference and conditions. Full Full power operation Middle Limited operation (about 75% of full) Low Limited operation (about 50% of full) 23

TECHNICAL DETAILS: ELECTRONICS KQS (Kawasaki Quick Shifter) (SE) * Complementing the engine s strong power and the dogring transmission, a contactless-type quick shifter enables quick upshifts and downshifts for seamless acceleration and quick and easy deceleration. (Photo 23) * During acceleration, the system detects that the shift lever has been actuated, and sends a signal to the ECU to cut ignition so that the dogrings can smoothly engage the next gear without having to use the clutch. * During deceleration, the KQS system automatically controls engine speed, allowing you to downshift without operating the clutch. * KQS does not function below 2,500 min -1. * The system offers very high reliability, as it is less prone to breaking than contact-type quick shifters. 23 Electronic Cruise Control: First for a Kawasaki Sport Tourer Kawasaki s latest cruise control system allows a desired speed to be maintained with the simple press of a button. Once activated, the rider does not have to constantly control the throttle. This reduces stress on the right hand when traveling long distances, enabling relaxed cruising and contributing to a high level of riding comfort. * Operation of the Electronic Cruise Control is conveniently from the left handle. The system can be engaged with the touch of a button. * Once the desired speed has been selected, engine output is adjusted automatically via the Electronic Throttle Valves to maintain speed when ascending or descending grades are encountered. The set speed can be adjusted using the + and - buttons. * Operating the brake lever, clutch lever or rear brake pedal, or shifting gears causes the Electronic Cruise Control to be disengaged. Closing the throttle beyond the zero-throttle position is another instinctive way to disengage the system. (The system also disengages automatically in the event of large traction control intervention.) 24
