1 2017 Model Information MODEL NAME: Ninja 1000 ABS MODEL CODE: ZX1000WHF REFINED SPORT TOURER WITH ADVANCED ELECTRONICS OFFERS DREAM COMBINATION: NINJA + TOURING Now in its third iteration, an even more polished Ninja 1000 continues to offer the comfort and convenience to enable sport riding enthusiasts to take their seductively styled machines touring. Complementing the even smoother power delivery and extremely composed handling, the new model features increased touring performance care of improved wind protection, greater comfort and the clean-mount pannier system. All-new Ninja family styling deepens its sporty image. And loaded with the latest electronics technology that Kawasaki has to offer, the new Ninja 1000 is even better equipped to meet a wide range of rider needs.

2 ENGINE Exhilarating In-line Four engine Powerful 1,043 cc liquid-cooled, 4-stroke In-line Four engine pulls strongly from all rpm and does not let up before the redline. Adding to rider exhilaration, the engine delivers superb response, a strong mid-range hit and an intoxicating intake howl. Revised engine settings offer even smoother power delivery, facilitating control and contributing to rider comfort and confidence. H Liquid-cooled, DOHC, 16-valve 1,043 cc In-line Four offers impressive power (104.5 kw (142 PS) and strong torque. H Downdraft throttle bodies allow intake air to travel to the engine in the shortest possible distance, contributing to performance. H A secondary balancer, driven off a gear on the 6th web of the crankshaft, eliminates excess vibration. Of course, a certain amount of engine vibration was desired as part of the bike's character (vibration contributes to the feeling of acceleration, increasing linearly with rpm), so vibration was not totally eliminated. Revised ECU settings contribute to even smoother power delivery, facilitating control and contributing to rider comfort and confidence, and deliver cleaner emissions, ensuring various market regulations (including Euro 4) are cleared. Cool Air System H The Cool Air system routes cool air to the airbox from ducts at the front of the side fairings, minimising performance loss due to heated intake air. This should not be confused with Ram Air, where force-fed air becomes pressurised in the airbox. Exhaust System H The exhaust system features a 4-into-2- pre-chamber-into-2 layout. Silencer end-caps create a quadstyle image. New end cap design with large exhaust exits adds to the sporty looks. H Main and pre-catalysers ensure emissions are clean. Assist & Slipper Clutch: Lighter & Sportier Operation H Assist & Slipper Clutch was developed based on feedback from racing activities. The clutch uses two types of cams (an assist cam and a slipper cam). H When the engine is operating at normal rpm the assist cam functions as a self-servo mechanism, pulling the clutch hub and operating plate together to compress the clutch plates. This allows the total clutch spring load to be reduced, resulting in a lighter clutch lever pull when operating the clutch. H When excessive engine braking occurs as a result of quick downshifts (or an accidental downshift) the slipper cam comes into play, forcing the clutch hub and operating plate apart. This relieves pressure on the clutch plates to reduce back-torque and help prevent the rear tyre from hopping and skidding. Aluminium Twin-tube Frame The highly rigid aluminium frame features a high degree of mass centralisation, ensuring a balance of sharp turning and firm handling. H Aluminium twin-tube frame design features frame beams that go over engine, allowing a narrow construction that is easy to grip with the knees. H Lightweight and highly rigid, the frame uses the engine as a stressed member. The frame contributes to handling, offering a firm, planted feeling, good stability and light, nimble turning. H As much as possible welds were eliminated, contributing to appearance. Mass Centralisation HThe exhaust system (with large pre-chamber and short silencers), Horizontal Back-link rear suspension and the use of downdraft throttle bodies are the greatest contributors to mass centralisation. The Horizontal Back-link rear suspension arrangement frees up space taken up by the Uni-Trak suspension lower linkage, enabling a larger pre-chamber, which in turn allows the use of shorter mufflers and contributes to mass centralisation. The result is lighter, sharper handling. Turn-in is light. Steering is neutral after the bike has been leaned over. A

3 Inverted Front Fork & Horizontal Back-link Rear Suspension The Ninja 1000's suspension settings allow the bike to respond quickly to rider input while soaking up bumps and ruts. H 41 mm inverted front fork features stepless compression and rebound damping and spring preload adjustability. H Settings, offering both sporty performance (contributing to light handling on the street and in the hills) and comfort, were revised to deliver more direct handling. H Rear suspension positions the shock unit and linkage above the swingarm. The suspension is located far enough from the exhaust that operation is not affected by heat. H Visible from the outside, the Horizontal Backlink rear suspension contributes to the appearance of the Z1000 SX. H The rear shock features rebound and preload adjustability (now with remote adjuster). Revised shock settings and linkage ratio offer suppler suspension action for improved bump absorption and firmer cushioning. The new linkage also results in a lower seat height (820 mm >> 815 mm). (2) Remote Preload Adjuster H A new remote preload adjuster greatly facilitates making adjustments (without tools) to suit tandem riding or carrying luggage. Brakes H At the front, 300 mm petal brake discs are gripped by opposed 4- piston radial-mount monobloc calipers with differentiated diameter pistons: 32 mm (upper), 30 mm (lower). H The monobloc front brake calipers offer a firmer initial touch, the level of brake force is very easy to control, and overall brake performance is increased. New pad material with a higher coefficient of friction further contributes to the enhanced brake feeling. H The machined monobloc calipers feature an alumite coating and are laser-etched with a Kawasaki logo, adding to the bike's high-quality sporty looks. H Radial-pump front brake master cylinder also contributes to the superb control and feel offered by the calipers. Revised rear brake pad material and pedal optimised return spring offer improved control and increased overall performance. H The caliper is mounted below the swingarm and features a torque rod. The arrangement adds to the racy image. Supersport-style high-precision brake management system is standard equipment on the 2017 Ninja Please see KIBS (Kawasaki Intelligent anti-lock Brake System) below. H ABS provides added braking reassurance in emergency situations. Lightweight Wheels H Lightweight supersport-style 6-spoke wheels contribute to the unsprung weight. 4 EVERYDAY VERSATILITY: RELAXED RIDING POSITION Comfortable Ergonomics The Z1000 SX s relaxed riding position was designed to accommodate everything from city riding to touring to sport riding. This blend of comfort and control allows the rider to enjoy a variety of riding situations. H Relatively upright position (compared to supersport models) offers both control and comfort. H Separate, raised handlebars contribute to the sporty, comfortable riding position. The handlebar stays are mounted to the fork tube tops, which extend above the upper triple clamp. 5-way adjustable clutch lever can be set to suit the size of the rider's hands, contributing to rider comfort. Mirrors are positioned 20 mm farther outward and have a greater range of movement, offering easier adjustability. Both rider and passenger seats deliver increased comfort. The redesigned rider seat has a wider seat area, offering greater support, and enabling longer stretches at a time without having to stop due to discomfort. The passenger seat is longer (+25 mm), with 3 mm thicker urethane padding and a design that swells at the front (25 mm thicker) to help keep tandem riders from sliding forward, all contributing to increased passenger comfort. Dampers on the underside of the seat help reduce vibration. Ergonomically sculpted passenger grips are easy to hold and are naturally positioned, contributing to passenger comfort. Seat material of both seats has superb elasticity, offering increased comfort and holding performance. The material is also resistant to cold, allowing it to maintain its suppleness when temperatures drop and reducing the chance of tearing/ripping when exposed to cold temperatures. H Front footpegs are rubber mounted to reduce vibration transmitted to the rider. Further, vibration-absorbing weights on the back of the foot guards minimise fluttering of the floating pieces. The fairing design also covers part of the frame, contributing to a good ergonomic fit and helping to protect the rider from engine heat for added comfort. Increased Wind Protection A new double-bubble windshield is 15 mm taller at the centre, contributing to the increased wind protection. o Windshield has three available positions spanning approximately 20 and ranging from sporty to maximum wind protection, to suit rider preference. Adjustment can be done by hand (no tools required) by depressing the release button below the instrument panel. (Windshield adjustment should be done with the bike stopped.) Two-piece fairings are wider (up to 28 mm wider each side), offering increased wind protection for the rider's legs. Large-volume Fuel Tank H 19 litre fuel tank offers a substantial touring range. H Dynamic fuel tank design with tall upper surface features supersportstyle flared edges with a trim shape at the rear, a shape that is easy to grip with the knees. H Steel construction facilitates the use of a magnetic tank bag. Brighter Headlamps In addition to contributing to the Ninja 1000's sharper looks, dual LED headlamps also offer increased brightness while drawing less power. Each headlamp unit features low and high beams, as well as a LED position lamp.

5 Clean-mount Pannier System H Accessory GIVI panniers (28 litres, 5 kg max each) can each hold a full-face helmet. H The mounting system positions the panniers close to the bike's centreline. This makes them look well-integrated with the rear of the bike and facilitates navigating narrow spaces without worrying about the width of the panniers. H The panniers are colour-matched to the body of the bike and have the Kawasaki logo stamped into their covers, ensuring a quality image. H One-key system means that the panniers are conveniently unlocked and removed with the ignition key. Now that the standard tandem grips are compatible with the clean-mount system, mounting the panniers is as simple as sliding them onto the slots on the grips and the pannier supports integrated into tandem footpeg stays. (Installing accessory tandem grips is no longer required.) Because the elegant mounting system does not use cumbersome mounting brackets, the rear of the bike looks clean and sharp when the panniers are removed. ELECTRONICS KCMF (Kawasaki Cornering Management Function): Total Engine & Chassis Management Package The strength of Kawasaki's cutting-edge electronics has always been the highly sophisticated programming that, using minimal hardware, gives the ECU an accurate realtime picture of what the chassis is doing. Kawasaki's proprietary dynamic modelling program makes skilful use of the magic formula tyre model as it examines changes in multiple parameters, enabling it to take into account changing road and tyre conditions. Using the latest evolution of this advanced modelling software and feedback from a compact Bosch IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit), KCMF monitors engine and chassis parameters throughout the corner from entry, through the apex, to corner exit modulating brake force and engine power to facilitate smooth transition from acceleration to braking and back again, and to assist riders in tracing their intended line through the corner. On the Ninja 1000, KCMF oversees the following systems: - KTRC (including traction and wheelie control) - KIBS (including pitching and corner braking control) Enhanced Chassis Orientation Awareness: Bosch IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) The use of Bosch's compact IMU allows an additional layer of precision to be added to the already high-level KTRC and KIBS systems. IMU enables inertia along 6 DOF (degrees of freedom) to be monitored. Acceleration along longitudinal, transverse and vertical axes, plus roll rate and pitch rate are measured. The yaw rate is calculated by the ECU using Kawasaki original software. Additional feedback from the IMU gives an even clearer realtime picture of chassis orientation than the programming of the previous systems was able to predict. In addition to more precise management, feedback from the IMU enables KIBS to incorporate a new function. Corner braking control assists riders in tracing their intended line through the corner. Bosch's latest IMU is highly compact and very lightweight, weighing only 40 g.

6 KTRC (Kawasaki Traction Control) Three modes cover a wide range of riding conditions, offering either enhanced sport riding performance or the peace of mind to negotiate slippery surfaces with confidence. The IMU-enhanced feedback allows even more precise management than on the previous model. H Riders can choose from three modes. Modes 1 and 2 prioritise maximum forward acceleration. Mode 3 provides rider reassurance by facilitating smooth riding on slippery surfaces. Riders may also elect to turn the system off. H In Modes 1 and 2, highly sophisticated programming allows a degree of slip a certain amount of slip is required to maximise acceleration. The ideal slip ratio varies according to conditions. The system looks at a number of parameters to get an accurate real-time picture of what is going on: front and rear wheel speed (slippage) and various engine, machine and rider input parameters are monitored. H Using complex analysis, the system is able to predict when traction conditions are about to become unfavourable. By acting before slippage exceeds the range for optimal traction, drops in power can be minimised, resulting in ultra-smooth operation. H Conditions are confirmed every 5 milliseconds, and control via ignition timing allows extremely quick reaction. H In Mode 3 (the most intrusive) the same logic and control as in Modes 1 and 2 is employed during normal operation. However, when excessive rear wheel spin is detected, Mode 3 switches to three-way control governing ignition timing, fuel delivery and airflow (via the sub-throttles) and engine output is reduced to a level that allows the rear wheel to regain grip. It is the control of the sub-throttles that enables smooth operation. This fine control results in a very natural feeling: engagement is smooth, on/off transition is smooth, and stability is maintained during extended operation. H In Mode 3, KTRC effectively enables riders to negotiate both short slippery patches (train tracks or manhole covers) and extended stretches of bad road (wet pavement, cobblestone, gravel, etc) without worry. Wheel spin is also limited when starting on a slippery surface. H The system is also able to distinguish between torque wheelies, which are smooth, and sudden wheelies, which can be dangerous. In Modes 1 and 2, torque wheelies are allowed as long as acceptable acceleration is maintained. Sudden wheelies trigger system intervention. In Mode 3, all wheelies are prevented. With the addition of the IMU, wheelie control is more precise. In addition to smoother operation, the system limits wheelies to a level optimised for street-use taking into account the potential weight of a passenger and luggage. H The system uses minimal hardware but complex software. Apart from the engine ECU, the system relies on only front and rear wheel speed sensors which means minimal additional weight (none, in the case of ABS models, which already have wheel speed sensors). H By default, KTRC is always ON when the engine is started. (The mode will be the same as when the engine was turned off, or in Mode 1 if the system had been turned off.) To ride with KTRC off, riders must consciously turn the system OFF (using the mode button on the left grip). Power Mode selection H A choice of Full Power or Low Power modes allows riders to set power delivery to suit preference and conditions. While output at lower rpm is the same, Low Power mode limits output to approximately 70% of Full Power and uses a milder throttle response. (Reduction of both power and throttle response varies according to engine speed (rpm), throttle position and gear position.) H Combining the KTRC and Power Mode options, riders have eight combinations from which to choose. For example, an experienced rider on dry pavement might choose Full Power and KTRC Mode 1 for sport riding. On a wet and/or slippery road surface, Low Power and KTRC Mode 3 might be selected. Each system can be set independently to best suit rider skill/preference, riding location and road conditions. H Like KTRC, Power Mode can also be controlled from the left grip.

7 KIBS (Kawasaki Intelligent anti-lock Brake System) Kawasaki's supersport-grade high-precision brake management system is standard equipment on the 2017 Ninja This is the same base system used on the Ninja H2 and Ninja ZX-10R, with programming and settings revised to suit the performance parameters of the Ninja KIBS is a multi-sensing system, using the input from numerous sources. In addition to front and rear wheel speed sensors (standard for any ABS system), KIBS also monitors front caliper hydraulic pressure and various information from the engine ECU (throttle position, engine speed, clutch actuation and gear position). High-precision brake pressure control enables the system to avoid reduced brake performance due to excessive pressure drops, allows lever feel to be maintained when KIBS is active, and ensures ABS pulses feel smooth (not heavy). High-precision brake pressure control also offers a number of sport riding benefits: 1. Rear lift suppression 2. Minimal kickback during operation 3. Accounting for back-torque Supersport models pitch more than most motorcycles, so there is a greater tendency for the rear to lift under hard braking. By monitoring front caliper hydraulic pressure, KIBS is able to regulate pressure increases, reducing the tendency of the rear to lift. This happens in two situations: 1) Before conditions require ABS intervention, KIBS prevents the pressure from increasing too quickly, thus suppressing rear lift, and 2) after ABS has decreased pressure to prevent wheel lock, KIBS pressure is not returned too quickly, preventing a sudden increase that could induce rear lift. Suppressing this tendency contributes to enhanced braking stability. Precise control of front caliper pressure also enables KIBS to minimise kickback during operation. Pressure is increased in small amounts and slips are minimised, resulting in a very smooth operation feeling. This of course translates to minimal distraction to the rider during sport riding. By accounting for back-torque, KIBS is able to offer increased rear brake control during downshifts. KIBS parameters include throttle position, clutch actuation and gear position, allowing the system to recognise engine back-torque from downshifting or getting off the gas at high rpm. Rear wheel slip due to engine braking often triggers ABS action on standard systems, but by preventing unnecessary ABS intervention in these situations, KIBS enables rear brake control to be maintained. With feedback from the IMU, KIBS is able to incorporate a new function: corner braking control. Should riders use the brakes beyond the entrance to a turn (i.e. trail braking) or mid-corner (e.g. to avoid an obstacle), brake force is modulated to counter the tendency of the bike to stand up under braking. This assists riders in tracing their intended line through the corner instead of running wide. Shown with accessory panniers

8 Stylish Multi-Function Instrumentation All-new instrument panel layout features a large analogue tachometer flanked by warning lamps on one side, and a gear position indicator and multi-function LCD screen on the other. Gear position indicator increases shifting precision and confidence, while also lending to the Ninja 1000's sporty image. Complementing a new shift-up indicator lamp, the tachometer's needle changes colour (from white to pink to red) to indicate the rider-selectable shift-up timing. - During normal operation the shift indicator lamp is off, and the tachometer needle is white. - When engine speed is within 500 rpm of the selected shift-up timing, the shift indicator lamp flashes, and the tachometer needle turns pink. - When the chosen engine speed is reached, the shift indicator lamp flashes rapidly, and the tachometer needle turns red. Riders can set the shift-up timing between 5,000 and 11,000 rpm in 250 rpm increments. The shift indicator function may also be turned off. LCD screen features a negative display, adding to the instrument cluster's sporty, modern appearance. In addition to the digital speedometer and gear position indicator (new for 2017), display functions include: odometer, dual trip meters, remaining range, current and average fuel consumption, external temperature (new for 2017), coolant temperature, clock and the Economical Riding Indicator. Other new features include indicators for the IMU and KIBS. H The Economical Riding Indicator appears on the LCD screen to indicate favourable fuel consumption. Paying attention to conditions that result in the mark appearing can assist riders to maximise their fuel efficiency. This handy feature is active all the time, although to be effective, the rider must ride in a gentle manner: less than 6,000 rpm, less than 30% throttle, under 140 km/h. H A hazard switch is located on the left handlebar. Numerous Accessories In addition to the GIVI panniers, a number of Kawasaki genuine accessories contribute to the Ninja 1000's touring performance. A larger GIVI top case (47 litres, 5 kg max) offers enough room to hold two full-face helmets. Like the panniers, the top case can be fitted with the one-key system. ERGO-FIT low-seat reduces the seat height 8 mm, facilitating the reach to the ground for increased confidence and comfort. Seat leather is the same cold-resistant, high-elasticity-type material used on the standard seats. Other available accessories include: smoked windshield, gel seat, single seat cover, tank bag, smart bag (JPN only), soft top case, grip heaters, DC outlet (7.5 A, 20 W), GPS unit bracket, sliders, crankcase rings, front axle sliders, tank pad, knee pads, wheel rim tape.
