While the low, short hood up front became standard for later EMD SD and GP models, as older GP9s started through rebuilding programs, many returned to duty sporting new chopped hoods and center windshields. 3 Summer Jobs Heat waves dance above the rails and the smell of creosote hangs heavy in the humid air, where the only breeze comes as trains roll by in the opposite direction. Signals ahead gleam approach, restricting and the dispatcher wants us off his railroad now! Chances are we won t get much of a break before the backlog clears and we re hard at it again, but we ll at least have time to reset the spreader blades to profile the next few miles of track.
