1 RDC-1 Phase 2 Rapido is proud to add the Phase 1 & Phase 2 Budd RDC-1 models to its growing catalog of museumquality US and Canadian locos and rolling stock. Our first RDC production run focuses on the RDC-1. This was built with coach seating throughout while the RDC-2 and RDC-3 included compartments for baggage or mail. As well as using original blueprints, our 3D scanning team visited two actual RDCs to capture the classic features of the Budd diesel rail cars. Above: RDC-1 Phase 1 Our RDC-1 model will be produced in both Phase 1 and 2 variants. These railfan terms were never actually used by Budd, but they neatly describe the major differences between the early style of RDCs delivered between and the new look RDCs built between The model also features Phase 1b, 1c or 2 roof blisters as appropriate, while the Canadian and Amtrak/B&O examples with diaphragms and rebuilt light/numberboards on the cab roof will also be faithfully rendered. The key spotting differences between the two phases are described below: Phase 1: Headlight in cab roof, big front windows, small or no pilot. Phase 2: Headlight box on cab roof, small front windows, wraparound drainage strip, large pilot. RDC-1 Phase 1 with rebuilt headlight assembly, diaphragm and new pilot Hobby-leading underbody detail with hidden motors & flywheels The real RDC-1 was built with two engine compartments under the floor and the Rapido model uses the same configuration. This enables us to hide two small motors with flywheels in the same space, allowing us to include complete interiors and full underbody equipment. All of our RDCs feature lit headlights, class lights and numberboards; as well as the option of amazingly accurate sound.,

Built by the Budd Company of Philadelphia in their hundreds between the late 1940s and early 1960s, the single-car RDC (Rail Diesel Car) fleet was ubiquitous on passenger service throughout Canada and the United States on any routes that could not justify loco-hauled operation. The 85ft long vehicles, which were powered by a pair of Detroit Diesel Series 110 engines, could be employed in single formation or coupled together with other examples - all controlled from the lead RDC cab. North of the border, Pacific Great Eastern (later British Columbia Railway), CN and CP all rostered large numbers of RDCs, which later passed to VIA, while the Alaska RR also acquired four units. In the lower 48, the Boston & Maine was the principle user of these single-car units, but they were also an important part of the rural lines and short-haul commuter passenger fleet of other railroad companies, including the Santa Fe, B&O, C&EI, CNW, GN, CNJ, LV, MKT, New Haven, NP, NYC, PRSL, Reading, Rock Island, SP, Susquehanna and WP. Many later worked for Penn Central/Conrail and other railroads before moving to Amtrak and various commuter agencies such as the Long Island RR, MBTA, Metro-North, NJT, etc. Some RDCs are still operational, while they can also be found in small numbers on scenic lines in both countries.
