The PCA series arrester is designed to perform in the toughest environmental conditions and to meet and exceed the requirements of IEC Our gapless zinc oxide polymeric arresters have been in service since 1986 and now the PCA range builds on that experience and know how. The PCA development has been based on 30 years of internal experience in arrester design and manufacture within the Tyco Electronics Energy Division. The PCA qualification was performed in internationally recognised and independent laboratory facilities in Europe. Sealing: All arrester cores are encapsulated in silicone insulating housing. A permanent chemical bond connects arrester core and the non-tracking silicone housing. This invisible interface prevents moisture from entering during severe thermal fluctuations due to normal climatic and energy absorption events. The arrester void-free construction eliminates moisture vapour transmission. Polymer housing: Non-tracking and hydrophobic silicone insulating material is used for PCA arrester housings. The PCA series is available with standard or extended creepage distance. The housing material has a proven performance in long term TERT and UV aging tests and a proven resistance to flammability. Integrated design: Manufacturing integrates all components in a single piece. There are no glued interfaces. The design is void and gap free ensuring optimum performance under the harshest conditions. Safe mode of failure: Safe mode of failure in the event of short circuit. 6 Reliability, quality and protection excellence Qualification testing: Aluminium Fittings Silicone Rubber Housing Glass fibre Rods Decades of arrester and materials, design and development experience has been combined to create the PCA surge arrester series. The basic construction comprises high energy ZnO varistor assembled within a open cage design. The following IEC design type tests have been carried out on the PCA surge arrester series. Insulation withstand tests on the arrester housing. Residual voltage test. Long duration current impulse withstand test. Operating duty tests. Short-circuit tests. Internal partial discharge test. Bending moment test (Cantilever). Moisture ingress test. Weather Ageing Test. Power frequency voltage versus time characteristics on the arrester. The silicone insulating material has been designed and optimised for arrester application. The following additional testing was performed in the qualification of the silicone. Aluminium Crimp ZnO Varistors Tracking and Erosion. UV testing. Thermal endurance. Dielectric testing. Flammability testing. Long term water immersion testing. Production and Quality: All Tyco Electronics arrester production facilities are ISO accredited and internal procedures ensure test programs that guarantees quality conforming products. 100% of all varistors are tested and stamped with unique varistor residual and reference voltage.
