3 Surge Arresters Tyco Electronics Energy Division covers a wide range of porcelain and polymeric transmission surge arresters. The Bowthorpe EMP range of arresters has demonstrated reliable performance in environments all over the world for over 60 years. Bowthorpe EMP, unlike other manufacturers, recognise that some Power Utilities require the need to maintain the conventional ZnO porcelain surge arrester. A program of continuous design update and development on the porcelain arrester has provided a range of surge arresters to meet the demands of most system voltages. Design Evaluated and Type Tested at the HV Laboratory in Brighton. Bowthorpe EMP were the first manufacturer to develop the polymeric housed arrester for commercial operation (1983). 4 H, 2H & 3H Modular Single Column Polymeric Surge Arresters The essential feature of the international construction is the homogeneous resin and glass fibre bond over the complete insulated surface of the ZnO varistor elements. The arrester module has good conductivity even when high cantilever loads are applied and provides a uniform dielectric at the insulated surface of the ZnO elements. 8 Series Parallel Modular Polymeric Surge Arresters The series parallel construction comprises individual surge arrester modules rated between 30 and 45kV interconnected by means of corona free aluminium alloy cross arm. Each surge arrester module is completely impervious to the ingress of moisture and utilises the high mechanical strength properties of the ZnO varistors bonded by cured resin impregnated glass fibre. The seismic performance of the 500kV arrester has been proven in two leading test facilities. Bonneville Power USA performed at Portland State University and NEL East Kilbride UK. The diameter of the series parallel design has been calculated to reduce the radial field stress to a minimum, even under adverse environmental conditions. 16 Station Class Porcelain Surge Arresters Porcelain surge arresters are available for applications up to 400kV systems. Porcelain housing designs have been used by us for over 55 years. From 1945 we produced porcelain surge arresters to the gapped silicone carbide pattern and since 1980 we have produced arresters to the gapless ZnO design. The design consists of porcelain housing which conforms to IEC-815 with an Aero Dynamic shed profile. The varistors, spacers and locating rings are assembled under compression with pressure relief diaphragms at either end. The air void is evacuated and replaced with dry air, then sealed. Routine tests are carried out to show that the manufacturing conforms to the current International standard. 26 PSRB single column Polymeric Housed Surge Arresters The PSRB surge arrester is available for applications up to 220kV systems. The design utilises a housing construction, which is a resin and glass fibre strengthening sleeve over moulded with Silicone Rubber outer insulating housing fitted with aluminium flanges. High cantilever mechanical strength is achieved on this design with the internal assembly similar to that of the porcelain Housed Surge Arrester. The design has been tested to IEC and demonstrates a 63kA short circuit performance. Routine tests are carried out to show that the manufacturing conforms to the current international standard. 32 There are few places more exposed to direct lightning strikes than an airfield. In such situations lightning strikes within the vicinity of the airfield can result in permanent damage to electrical equipment. Airfield lighting circuits are particularly vulnerable as the associated cable networks present an attractive low impedance path for lightning surge currents to earth. The result of a nearby lightning strike can be permanent damage to the control circuits unless a suitable lightning arrester is fitted to the lighting control equipment. The Lightning Arrester Type 2DCAFL4 is designed to protect airfield lighting control equipment from the effects of direct or indirect lightning strikes. The arrester is provided with two metal oxide active elements which are connected in parallel with the supply cables. Installation requires only the cutting of the supply cables at a convenient place close to the control equipment and connection of the arrester to a good electrical earth. Arrester 2DCAFL4 can be fitted to new equipment but is primarily designed to be quickly installed on existing circuits. The SPG1 Spark Gap is designed for use with traction circuits to provide virtually instantaneous protection of both equipment and personnel from power system faults. The unit also provides protection against lightning generated voltages which would otherwise cause damage to signalling and cable circuits. The SPG1 is constructed in stainless steel of rugged design allowing the SPG to be installed in harsh environments such as track side locations without additional weather protection. Suitable for use on circuits where standing/induced voltages do not exceed 110v RMS. Fast operation Typical 5 microseconds with 11kA fault current. Internal spark gap module unit easily replaced after fault current operation. Fail safe feature ensures safety to personnel and equipment. Service proven performance. High internal impedance with low capacitance does not interfere with track signalling circuits. The Bowthorpe EMP range of Surge Arrester monitoring instruments are fully tested for use with any manufacturers surge arrester. The SC12 is a Surge Counter only, whilst the SC13 provides the additional measurement of total leakage current. The analogue instrument provides a means of monitoring the current through the arrester and the leakage current over the surface of the arrester housing. Significant changes after installation may indicate a deterioration in the arrester or a build up of surface contamination. These instruments, which require no auxiliary supply, are designed for installation in the earth connections of a single surge arrester or alternatively the SC12 may be used with the common earth of a three phase set. Fully weatherproofed and sealed for life they are housed in a one piece gravity die cast aluminium case coated to enhance its already rear of the case providing a single high degree of resistance to surface clearance hole for the galvanised corrosion.
