What is Energy Management? Comprehensive Energy Management includes Energy Efficiency and Demand Response programs. Energy Efficiency projects lead to permanent reductions in energy usage, usually by upgrading equipment and optimizing building system design. Demand Response programs offer lowcost ways to reduce your electrical bill for agreeing to temporarily reduce or shift your electrical consumption when requested by SCE. These requests would typically be in response to either a constrained electrical grid or increasing electrical prices. To help you identify your comprehensive energy needs, Southern California Edison can coordinate an audit of your business to assess its energy needs or provide you with our easy-to-use online tools to help you get started. Working together, we can develop a long-term energy strategy that combines Energy Efficiency and Demand Response programs to lower your energy demand, as well as your operating and capital costs. With California s growing population, increasing demand for energy, and the pressing regulatory need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), now is the time to be strategic and prepare your business for the future of energy management. Comprehensive Energy management Includes both permanent and temporary energy reduction Optimize your savings and energy conservation by employing an integrated approach to Energy Management See the comprehensive project scenario summary on page 8 for details $349,265 $359,216 Energy Efficiency Annual Bill Savings One-time Incentive $373,381 Annual Bill Savings $24,116 Demand Response Annual Incentives 2,320,000 Lbs of Greenhouse Gas Reduction 3

Opportunity In today s economy, it s more important than ever to get the most out of the resources we use to process our food. Southern California Edison is there for you with s designed to help increase your energy efficiency while reducing operating costs and enhancing your bottom line in this vital industry. FOOD PROCESSING is the 3 rd largest industrial energy user in the state CHILLING TAKES UP % of the total electricity usage in meat processing. 2 4

Making an efficient impact on the agriculture food processing industry. California s agriculture processing industry is a vital one, generating more than $50 billion in annual revenue. 1 Out of this revenue nearly 30% comes from livestock and poultry, with a vast amount coming from dairy, along with fruit and nut production. As one might expect, the food processing industry is a huge energy user. However, when you consider that 90% of the agricultural business s electric bill is associated with water use and 75% of electricity usage at food and beverage processors occurs in the processing and assembly systems, you have an enormous opportunity for increasing efficiencies. With market price volatility, customer consolidation and regulatory requirements, reducing operational costs is critical for profitability. Automating the production process and streamlining usage are just two ways energy can be better managed. Over time, proper energy management and smart investment will have a significant impact to the bottom line, enough to weather through the volatility of agricultural product prices. 8 Action There are three stages for developing smart and cost-effective Energy Management Solutions. The first revolves around action. You start by making the commitment to take action. Your SCE Account Representative, an authorized third-party service provider or your in-house team can help you assess your operation s energy needs and set energy improvement goals that will lead to a return on your investment. The second stage is developing and implementing your long-term Energy Action Plan. By planning ahead, you not only adapt to changing conditions, you can stay ahead of the curve. In the third stage, you continuously reassess your progress and set new goals as you work to further reduce energy use across your enterprise Make commitment Assess performance and Set goals Comprehensive energy audit of your facility Create Energy action plan Your customized continuous energy improvement strategy 6

From commitment to results SCE will be with you every step of the way as you evaluate, implement and refine the Energy Management Solutions that make sense for your business. Achieving your company s energy goals begins when every level of your organization makes a commitment to using energy more efficiently and wisely. SCE can then help you, either with personal assistance or with our user-friendly online tools, to perform a comprehensive energy audit of your operations that you can use to determine the best mix of Energy Efficiency s and Demand Response strategies. This leads to a customized Energy Action Plan that establishes the path for your company to achieve its goals and objectives. Your custom plan helps you implement specific no-cost and low-cost projects, like installing more efficient pumps, upgrading compressors, redesigning distribution infrastructure, and improving process and system controls. Energy Action Plans also establish performance metrics that allow you to evaluate progress so you can recognize achievements, reinvest energy savings and incentives into more capitalintensive projects and make Energy Management a critical component in everyday decision-making. Successful Energy Action Plans are regularly updated to reflect recent achievements, changes in performance or operations, external factors and shifting priorities Implement energy action plan Prioritize energy management projects Implement Demand Response evaluate progress Establish performance metrics recognize achievements Update regularly and keep track of changes in performance reassess 7 7

Savings Project Scenario No. 1 8 Food Processing Situation A Central Valley food processing company was growing. To maximize efficiency while controlling costs, the company decided to take a comprehensive look at their energy consumption in order to identify improvement opportunities. Solution The 125,000-sq-ft processing plant included 35,000 sq ft of refrigerated space, which operated at full capacity throughout the year, regardless of seasonal demand. After the comprehensive assessment, several energy-saving s were recommended, including installing a control system to allow floating head pressure, temperature sensors on the air units, variable-speed drives on condenser fans, an evaporative fan in the high-rise freezer, and compressors. After optimizing the refrigeration system, SCE s Technical Audit & Technology Incentive (TA&TI) program was used to identify areas that could reduce electrical load during a Demand Response (DR) event. The company also enrolled in SCE s Demand Bidding program in order to qualify for an additional one-time DR Technology Incentive to help recover the cost of installing a control system to shut down one production line during a DR event. Results and Comprehensive Project Breakdown The comprehensive project had a simple payback of just over 1.5 years. It resulted in an annual electricity savings of 2.3 million kwh, or about $349,000, off their bill. Using SCE s Demand Response programs, the company received $83,000 in Technology Incentives, plus monthly bill credits totaling $24,000 in the first year for participating in the Demand Bidding program. Ultimately, the project helped the community by eliminating 2,320,000 lbs of harmful greenhouse gas that otherwise would have been released into the environment. 11 Project Scenario No. 2 Growers/Farmers Situation A farmer is growing fruits and other row crops on 350 acres. For a high-volume farming operation, profitability comes from controlling costs. As part of the resource evaluation, the farmer looked at water, electricity, and other fuel usages. Since 90% of the electric bill is associated with water transportation, evaluating pumping and distribution systems operations first made sense. $58,431 Annual bill savings $39,952 SCE incentives 385,000 Lbs of greenhouse gas reduction Solution SCE performed a pump test on the main system pump to evaluate its operating pump efficiency (OPE). As recommended in the pump-test efficiency report, the farmer upgraded the existing pump and installed a new premium efficiency motor on the pumping system. To help improve the project payback, the SCE representative recommended replacing the older blower fans in the storage area with high-volume low-speed fans and upgrading the lighting system from high-intensity discharge (HID) to new linear fluorescent T8 fixtures. Results By using SCE s pump-testing services and incentive offerings, the farmer improved the performance of the farm s pumping operation, upgraded other energy systems and successfully reduced their annual utility expense by $58,430. Including the $39,950 in incentives received from SCE, the simple payback for the project was just over one year (13 months). The project saved over 389,541 kwh of energy, which is equivalent to eliminating 385,000 lbs of harmful greenhouse gas emissions from the environment. Project Scenario No. 3 Cold Storage/ Refrigerated Warehouses Situation A California produce supplier operates a cold-storage facility using water-cooled refrigeration compressors to cool two new cold storage rooms and one new packing room. As a 24/7 operation, managing the use of energy is critical to the bottom line. The company is interested in reducing operating costs by investing in energy-efficient system upgrades and retrofits. $99,340 Annual bill savings $112,500 SCE incentives 660,880 Lbs of greenhouse gas reduction See page 40 to learn more about DR Technology Incentives with Auto-Demand Response Solution An integrated audit of the facility recommended replacing the existing metal halide fixtures with fluorescent high output fixtures, retrofitting the refrigeration system with floating head pressure controls, and installing variable-speed drives on the compressors and evaporator fans. By installing an Energy Management System (EMS) that integrated the existing control system, they could implement a load-shifting strategy that reduced electricity costs by automating pre-cooling operations and shifting load to after-hours (off-peak periods) to coincide with lower energy rates. Automating the system qualified them to participate in SCE s Automated Demand Response (Auto DR) program and qualify for one-time cash incentives to help offset the cost of installing the EMS. Results By installing the recommended s, the company reduced their energy usage by an estimated 662,300 kwh per year, saving approximately $99,340 annually on their bill, and qualifying for $88,200 in Energy Efficiency and $24,300 in Auto DR cash incentives. During the year, the customer shifted 81 kw of their energy usage to off-peak periods, for an additional $2,920 in annual energy bill savings. Factoring in the utility incentives, the project payback was only 14 months. The company s actions also eliminated over 660,880 lbs of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. If you d like to learn more about how companies have saved money by employing energy management s, please see additional project scenarios at These scenarios are based on projects involving various levels of complexity and technology that were completed by various SCE customers in the incentive funding cycle. Each project is unique, and your final savings (energy and utility) may vary. 9
