RENEW YOUR BLUE MAX & AMA MEMBERSHIPS!! AMA CHARTER 1040 GOLD LEADERSHIP CLUB PROPWASH & BACKBLAST by Mike Melendy Summer finally arrived, so let s get out and fly. Please observe the safety rules as they benefit all of us. It is real easy to get slack and the more advanced fliers are often the guiltiest! Set the example, preferably a good one. End of sermon. This month s Fun Fly will be a parachute drop. There will be a $1 deposit on parachutes, refundable on return of same. Hopefully this will improve your aim! Ray Laning is on official leave and Jed Korthals will be filling in until his return. Some of us are off to Sig Mfg in Iowa and will report at the meeting. With the exception of tall grass, the field is in good shape and more will be addressed at the meeting. There will be a brief program by some of our full scale pilots on the similarities of flying R/C models and the full size planes. See you at the meeting. ~ Mike President Mike Melendy Vice President Howard Bifeld Editor Lynne Walters Board of Directors Steve Haas Shlomo Rimer Bradford Walters Gene Zerega Secretary Murry Randell Treasurer Bob Wisinski Webmaster Doug Bradbury COMMITTEES Banquet Ray Laning Field Marshal John Haderly Jim Kaufman Flying Proficiency Steve Haas Fun-Fly Ray Laning Ground Crew Gene Zerega Matt Hauser Noise Shlomo Rimer Picnic Carl Will/Gene Derbick Bob Breckler Programs OPEN Safety Don Linder/Rich Blaha

3 June 2014 Volume 21 Issue 6 Page 3 Crash Reports Mike Melendy - Edge - Tore landing gear off. Bob Breckler - Ultimate nosed in after dead stick. Bob Benzuly - Aerobat - lost due to orientation Dale Pate - Little Emma crashed, has been repaired. SAFETY NOTES By Don Linder Now that the flying season is in full swing we should once more talk about the safety rules and guidelines. The purpose of rules and guidelines is to reduce the probability (the ODDS) of having an accident. Operating outside of the rules and guidelines doesn't guarantee an immediate accident (incident), but it can make it more likely. Most of our worst potential accidents result from the spatial intersection of people and fast-moving hard or heavy objects such as propellers, flying engines, automobiles. Some are AMA rules and some are Deer Grove field rules. Parking and Loading Area: Please spend a reasonably minimum amount of time in the unloading area. Especially on weekends there are a lot of pilots and spectators coming and going. Drive slowly on our driveway. Turn around carefully after unloading to avoid hitting pedestrians and other cars. Spectators may not be aware of our practices and may be distracted by watching flying airplanes. Although some people back all the way out to the parking lot, I think it is safer to turn around and drive out. Your range of vision is much better when your vehicle is moving forward. Pit Area: Use a starting bench or a legitimate hold-back when starting your engine. I have seen some home-made forks that look pretty flimsy. Recently those with really BIG models have opted to use a heavy strap and a BIG screwdriver in the pit holes. That seems to work if you use a big enough screwdriver. Use a starting stick, an electric starter, or a heavy leather glove when cranking your engine. Don't reach over, under, or around your spinning prop to remove your glow driver. Walk around behind to remove it. (AMA Rule) Modelers with gasoline engines MUST have a fire extinguisher present (not locked up in the car or the impound shed.) Flight Line: (D.G. rule) No taxiing in or out of the pit area. This means anywhere behind the safety fence. It is good practice when taxiing back to turn sideways at the gaps in the fence to assure that a run-away plane will not go into the pit. You should be able to kill your engine remotely. (D.G. rule) At the flight line call out your intentions loudly enough for the other fliers to hear and to respond. Calls should be: TAXI OUT, TAKING OFF, LANDING, TAXI BACK, ON THE FIELD, CLEAR (when off the field.) Going out, going up, coming down, are poor substitutes for simply saying the correct words. (AMA Rule) Don't fly closer than 25 feet from any person, and 65 feet from any spectator. Flying no closer than the near side of the runway will satisfy these distances. Distance provides lower probability of accidental collision. When a pilot must go out onto the field to set out or retrieve a model, fliers still in the air should avoid flying low over that pilot. Don't taxi out or take off when someone is on the field. Health and Personal Safety: Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from ultraviolet rays. Use sunscreen, a wide brim hat, and/or long sleeves to avoid burning and skin cancer. Bring water or fluids to stay hydrated on hot days. Quit flying if you are tired. Quit flying if a thunderstorm moves in.
