BOS and Power Electronics Workshop SPI - 12 September, 2012 Scott McWilliams Andrew C. Rudack 25-Sep-12 1

BOS and Power Electronics Workshop Agenda: Noon 12:45 1:00 1:20 1:30 2:10 2:15 Registration/lunch Intro/Workshop objectives Dow presentation (Stephen Pisklak) Challenges Pareto Review Discussion/Additional Challenges Meeting wrap-up/action Items Adjourn 25-Sep-12 2

DOE SunShot Initiative Mission of DOE SunShot Initiative - Deliver grid-parity solar PV by 2020, a goal that will demand ~75% reduction in the cost of systems compared with today - Advance large-scale US solar manufacturing, drive national deployment of solar energy SunShot Initiative focused on R&D and cost reductions PV Cells / Modules 3 recipients Balance of System Power Electronics April 11, 2011 award recipients of solar cell/module and BOS - Industry-led consortium, SEMATECH U.S. PVMC Copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS) pilot line, in partnership with CNSE csi metrology and wafering technologies, in partnership with UCF/FSEC in Florida - U.S. Photovoltaic Manufacturing Consortium (PVMC) Consortium Management CIGS csi 3

Workshop Objectives Review and add challenges associated with implementing advanced photovoltaic module and power electronic designs Rank those challenges Develop U.S. PVMC Balance of Systems programs that address the industry challenges identified 4

Dow Presentation Stephen Pisklak 5

Advanced Module and Power Electronics Challenges Votes Area Challenge 2 Regulation Eastern/Western/Ercot involvement in module/electronic designs for seamless approval 17 Research Lifetime and reliability focus, not just initial for early failure testing 1 Standards IEC61853 Part 1 - not being adopted for predicting degradation and weather 3 Metrics $/KW-HR metric vs. $/watt 5 Testing Independent data collected/reported for modules/bos not tethered to who pays for the module/bos report - like Fraunhofer data pre 2009? USPVMC? 2 Design SPC data available/ built-in to inverters 2 Design Module data - health monitoring and communications there s a problem - on module electronics

Advanced Module and Power Electronics Challenges Votes Area Challenge 2 Standards System energy rating methodology standards 1 Standards Certification and qual test for inverters 2 Manufacturing BOS manufacturing flexibility and compatibility with advanced module designs 5 Manufacturing Testing/metrology in factory specified to capture early failure 4 Standards Standardized connectors across BOS 2 Design Module level energy management and data transmission (telemetry, carrier)- cost competitive 1 Design Weather/climate/Doppler prediction input algorithm development

Advanced Module and Power Electronics Challenges Votes Area Challenge 5 Consortia Create Forum for power electronics like NREL QA 1 Codes Consortia Non-grounded >300v per 2014 NEC (forum) 0 Design Inverter switch Hz/voltage for world-wide market 6 Codes Design Arc-fault detection and remediation per 2014 NEC 2 Consortia World-wide /electrical codes dashboard 2 Design Reverse bias at night to combat photo induced degradation

Write-in Module and Power Electronics Challenges (not reflected in 7/11/2012 meeting Pareto results) Challenge Methods to lower barriers and costs for permitting, uniform and simplified permitting, evangelism to communities around the USA to achieve this IEC TC82 and UL to develop inverter certification standards Differentiating BOS and performance demands for Grid versus Consumer (large vs. small) modules/installations Forum for power electronics like QA Forum for Modules that NREL AIST and JRC started last year. Incompleteness and lack of clarity on UL 1741 leakage current regulations General lack of knowledge on leakage currents in terms of safety across the industry, when and where are transformers are needed PV/Inverters - FL/CA certification in addition to UL/ETL. Is trend 50 different State certifications required?

25-Sep-12 10

Challenges Added 2/12/2012 at SPI workshop on Advanced Module and Power Electronics Challenge Mil/NAVMAT specs for module leakage current National unified permitting required in USA, State/National expedited permit process (Solar ABCs, Plug and play) Incorporate energy storage into BOS discussion Rotating Equipment/inverters - temporary over-voltage and effective grounding requirements Don t overlap Solar ABCs - choose different area focus Institute reliability, safety and quality rating systems (like 5-star crash rating in automobiles) Define/standardize where arc-fault detection is installed Survey/publish building codes

Challenges Added 2/12/2012 at SPI workshop on Advanced Module and Power Electronics Challenge Better design information for supporting modules e.g. Installation and testing Standard to mount web/rack to roof structure (ASTM WK21327 work item under development) Invite additional stakeholders to participate - fire code/fire Marshalls (2012 building code enforcement, NFPA/fire rating UL1790) Standard walkways around, between modules/panels when installed - adopt CA fire recommendations 2014 National Electric Code - kill switch, embed electronics solution Environmental Safety Health involvement, Partner with SESHA/SEIA for safety standards Parametric shading and modeling, Enphase- like solution developed into a standard

Next Steps - Timeline Add challenges to original list via Monday 10/1/2012 5PM Send Challenges list for Pareto ranking Monday 10/8/2012 5PM Return Pareto ranking Monday 10/15/2012 WebEx/telecon to review Pareto results/next steps Wednesday 10/17/2012 Noon EDT Publication on 13
