2 Page 2 The Prez Sez. The weather is trying to improve, unfortunately most have it has occurred during the week when us non-retired guys cannot get out. Too many times have I left work at lunch to run some errands and found the sun out and winds low. We have received our contest sanction from the AMA for the NEAT Fair, and the SEFLI club insurance for the HEC and Bethpage are in place. Vendor invitations to the 2004 show will go out in early May, after I confirm the price of the Friday Night Kick-off Dinner with the Rockland House. See you at the meeting, and hopefully out at the field more often! Remember the contest season starts Saturday April 24th! Bethpage Park Restrictions With the ever increasing demand for flying fields comes with it the problem of overcrowding, control and the ever present danger of injury or death due to an out of control plane crash. Bethpage Polo Grounds for many years was home to only one club, The Whitman Flyers. The Flyers developed a comprehensive policy for training, testing and monitoring their pilots and the flight line. Even with their strict rules and policies, accidents have happened, placing the R/C flight privileges in jeopardy. As more clubs have entered the scene, applying and receiving permits to use the Polo Grounds there needed to be an across the board policy for all clubs. Aside from the club membership the permit and an AMA card, it is now the responsibility of the individual flying club to insure the pilot using the Bethpage field has had his or her pilot skills qualified and a Blue card issued by the club. The Card must be worn at all times at the field, and visibly displayed. Those persons not abiding to these rules will not be permitted to fly. Tom R. It s never too cold to fly! 3 Page 3 Toledo Show report, Tom Hunt Don A, Jim R, Bob A and myself drove out to the 50th (WOW!) Annual Weak Signals R/C Trade show (commonly called the Toledo Show) on Friday April 3 rd and saw the show on Saturday and until noon on Sunday. The 10-hour drive is well worth it. The show is quite a bit larger that WRAM show and a lot more attended. It does however, get as crowded near the booths during peak hours. For us "e-flyers" if could easily be called "The Year of the Brushless Motor". It seemed everywhere you turned, there was new brushless motor or controller from the current suppliers, or a new manufacturer or distributor. It was tough trying to keep up with who makes what! Multiplex (now owned by Hi-Tec) will be releasing a new "480" sized brushless motor for direct drive and or gearbox (Maxon 4.4/1 planetary) in three different turns, 4, 6, and 8. These motors are probably far from being a "480" replacement. Their specification table shows 7-10 cells and currents as high as 25 amps! That's 250 watts! That's more like a high quality "05" motor, not a 480! No word on price yet. They should have a matching ESC to market with it in 2 months. I should be getting a few of these motors/ ESC's for review for Fly R/C magazine when available. Northeast Sailplane showed me a new mini "outrunner" motor only slightly bigger than Mario's CD ROM motor. It is called the Microtex (Czech-Rep I believe). Sorry I did not get a picture of it. I was told that it will be a Speed 280 replacement (3-4 amps) and will cost $ E-Cubed R/C (Azarr) showed me the new MP- Jet (Czech-Rep) outrunner motors. There will be two styles: the large diameter, short length "Nippy" style and the smaller diameter, long length "AXI" style. Prices should be better than the Axi's at Hobby Lobby. He should have stock to sell in a month. E-flite (Horizon) showed me their new small internal rotor motors called the Park 370 and Park 400. These motors are intended to be drop in replacements into the GWS (and eventually their own) Speed 300 gearboxes. The motors will come with a 10-tooth pinion and adapter plate standard to mount them directly into these drive units. Motors will be around $40! Astro Bob showed me his new Astro 25 and 40 motors for larger models. I did not get prices, but I hope they will be competitive. They will come stock with his Superbox. I doubt they will be good direct drive motors. Kv is probably too high, if he intends to sell it with a fairly high ratio gearbox. Hacker will also be entering the "outrunner" market. I was shown their first offering, a motor about the same size as the smallest "Axi" (2208) Price, unfortunately, will be much higher listing at $ Another US company seems to be entering the brushless motor arena, BMI (Brushless Motors Inc. Their first motor is the Chili Pepper CP 20 motor. About the same size as the Hacker B20L with 5 turns and will be available producing the following Kv's (RPM/Volt constant): 2300, 3000, 3600, 4300, and Only the CP and CP will probably be appropriate for direct drive, the others will require a gearbox. The motor has Speed 400 bolt spacing on the front bell (2.5mm x 16mm). The bearing boss is the same size as a speed 400 so it should mate with any 400 gearbox currently available. Price will be a bit steep at $99.00 but may be discounted lower at distributors. There may have been a few more lurking in the shadows at the show. I just could not get around to see every little new vendor that has popped up in the last year. Going to be an exciting year! Hacker enters the Outrunner market. WS is 35", Area is 270 sq. in. and length is 34.75". Radio is 4 Ch Futaba Attack-4, Motor is a Speed 380 with a 10 x 6 folding prop geared at 3.5:1. Pack is a 10 cell NiCad w/500 mah. Wgt is 1.75 lbs and wing loading is oz. Looks good Harry. 400 with a 2.33:1 gear drive. Rx is a R114H, ESC is a Jetti 18, Wheels are made of Lyte Foam 1 3/4". An all foam bipe with a 32" WS, 320 sq. in. area and 9 oz. or 2 oz. Wing Load. Using a AXI 2208 brushless motor and a 9 x 6.3 prop, it should stand on its tail without a problem. Simple! Mario DiDiego s original design is a full fledged RC 3-channel model. WS is 16", (70 sq. in. WA), Motor is a Kenway Type N, 3" standard micro prop, Power 145 mah LiPo battery, Total weight under 1 oz.. 2 Selman actuators, Sergio Zigris Infra Red Rx and Tx. With a ft range. It will make the trip to Toledo and he expects to fly it during an indoor flight demonstration. Tom Hunt s Work In Progress model is the Bugatti 100. This model, under construction with a 144 sq. in. wing that has a 30" span. The smooth lines of this scale aircraft is a good example of how Tom designs and builds these models. It was not ready for the trip to Toledo, but Tom wanted us to see how it was progressing. It will use a GWS IPS V drive and a 7 x 6 prop. Weight to be 8 oz.
