June 2005 Dedicated to the Advancement of Electric Flight HOST of NEAT 2005 President: Tom Hunt Secretary: Tom Reilly Editor: Tom Reilly For changes in the meeting and contest dates due to weather/conflicts,please call or Tom Hunt at , Vice President: Jim Reid Treasurer: Joey Cabana Contact info:tom Hunt Tom Reilly - TDR19@LI-FISH.NET Prez Sez - page 2 Rudder Bug E - page 3 May Show & Tell - page 4 E-Dawg - page 6 Acro - Cutie - page 8 Event Schedule - Back page Thanks to Lionel Bernstein, Roy Thompson, Ray Juschkus, and George Rowsom. Next meeting JUNE 21st This month's News Letter features: A couple classics (the planes & the authors!) re-visited. Special Note from Bob Aberle: John Worth has successfully managed to set up a replacement for the now cancelled RC MICROFLIGHT newsletter. The new name for our "web-zine" is "RC MICRO WORLD". The first two issues (May and June) will be free samples open to everyone at this website:

Prez Sez Dear SEFLI'ers We have had some communication with the HEC concerning the use of Holtsville for flying. I must say it does not look promising. Incidents which may or may not be the fault of SEFLI have raised valid concerns by the governing body. They site three instances of concern. Two instances concern models entering the zoo area (we know of only one), and it was resolved very easily and without repercussion (so we thought)). One instance, which is rather troubling, states the owner of the model sought restitution for the damage to the model that the animals had caused. That certainly does not sound like any SEFLI'er I know of, however, if that person is a SEFLI member they are partly responsible for the loss of the field. The other instance was "two men in a black pick-up truck" that supposedly drove across the jogging track up to the hill without concern to the ladies pushing a baby stroller. This also does not sound like a SEFLI'er in character, nor do I know of any member(s) that drive a black pick-up... does this sound familiar to anyone else? It would certainly appear that some of the problem can be passed off on lack of control of who uses the facility, assuming that neither of these incidences were the results of poorly acting SEFLI members. If we are to regain use of the facility, I am sure that the only way it would work would be to forbid the car traffic to the top of the field and the HEC demand proof of membership at the gate to enter the back lot. We will approach the authority with this compromise and see if we can regain flying access to the HEC. In other news, the NEAT Fair preregistrations are moving right along with many vendors and pilots checking in. I will have an updated count for you at the June Meeting. Jim Reid, Roy Thompson, Joe Cabana, Alan Ford and myself took our woodworking tools to Calverton on the 4th of June. There is now a ride-on mower in a locked box at the Calverton field (built mostly from Alan Ford's de-constructed deck wood). Alan Ford also donated the mower when he purchased a new one. Joe Cabana and Alan delivered the mower on Saturday the 11th. There will be a grounds keeping committee formed and only those participants will know the combo to the mower shed. Have fun, fly safely, see you all on the 21st. Prez Tom

Rudder Bug By George Rowsom The Rudderbug was designed in 1949 by the Good brothers for rudder only control. It had a 72" wing span and won the 1949 Nationals. This scaled down 54" wing span model will have rudder and elevator and will be powered by a Nippy Black 1812/100 motor. It was built from the plan by Nick Ziroli Sr, which was featured in the January 04 issue of Model Airplane News. The wing area is 480 Sq in and it is 39" long. Construction is the old crutch method and not too difficult, although I had problems interpreting what the designer had in mind in a few areas, so I did what looked logical. At this stage of construction, I think I am going to have some problems getting the CG in the right place and may have to add nose weight. George

SEFLI AWARDS FOR OUTSTANDING PAST SERVICE TO THE CLUB Harvey Knopf Henry Prew Nick Dannenhoffer 8 Years as Club Secretary Years as Club President Years as Club Secretary SEFLI Show and Tell at the General Meeting on May 17, 2005 Jim Reid displays his modified Aqua Star, by Herr sea plane. The model was enlarged by Tom Hunt to a 430 sq. in. wing area and has a 16 oz. wing loading. The fuselage has a redesigned widened beam for better take-off from the water. Power is a 8.4 volt Speed 600. WS: 60", Weighs: 46 oz, Wing has one added bay, Battery is an 8 cell 1300 or 1950 mah pack. Looks great Jim. Good luck on your inaugural flight. lb Page 5

SEFLI SHOW AND TELL (continued) May 17, 2005 Tom Hunt brought in a couple of models that he has been writing a kit review on. They turn out to be quite interesting. The top pictures show the Graupner Mini Star Jet. This is from the Star series of foam electric models that Graupner has been marketing. The specs on this one is as follows: Wing Span 33.5", Overall length approx. 22", Wing Area approx. 316 sq. in., RTF weight 22 ounces, Construction is injection molded polystyrene foam and plastic, Battery: 2s2p Kokam 4000, Motor: Permax BL-4805D, Prop: 5.5 x 4.5 APC E, Power Loading: 68 watts/lb. Note: Added sub fins were installed to improve yaw stability. It flies great and will provide you with a long flight! The bottom pair of pictures are of the Great Planes Mini Super Sportster EP ARF, Specs are as follows: Wing Span 39.5", Overall length approx. 30.3", wing Area approx 276 sq. in., RTF weight: 24.4 ounces (stock system), 22 ounces with Brushless/Li-Po conversion, Construction: Balsa/Ply/Mylar covering, Battery: 8 cell Kan 1050 or 3s1p Kokam 1500, Stock motor: Speed 400 geared 4/1, Prop: 10 x 4.5, Brushless motor ver: Himax Outrunner with 9 x 6 APC E Prop., Stock system current: 12.5 amps, Brushless system current: 7 amps, Note: Great flying qualities like its larger brother. Stock system flies the model adequately, but the brushless system creates a better climb due to overall lighter weight and also gives much longer flights due to higher efficiency motor. (It is obvious that the conversion to a brushless system (though more expensive) is the way to go with electrics at this stage of RC electric model flying. Save up your money and go for the more efficient brushless systems.) lb Page 6

E-DAWG by Roy Thompson This model was scratch built from plans by Rich Uravitch included in the April 2004 Fly R/C magazine. The E-Dawg is based on Ken Willard s original Top-Dawg which was a construction article in the July 1966 issue of R/C Modeler magazine. The RCM article today is like traveling through time taking the reader back to the days of rudder only escapements, reed type radio systems and a new covering material called Monokote. Construction is traditional balsa and plywood with only minimal structural changes required for mounting the Axi brushless motor. Spruce spars were substituted for the square stock balsa called for on the plans. The original flat bottom airfoil was retained opting for adherence to the vintage design over aerobatic capability. The E-Dawg does feature ailerons which were not standard on the Top-Dawg. In flight the model has crisp response to rudder and elevator but is a bit slow on ailerons. Roll rate is acceptable as long as airspeed is kept high. Lateral control gets very mushy near the stall requiring rudder inputs to maintain heading. A Kokam 3S1P 3200 mah lipoly battery was chosen to power this model. The desire was to carry enough capacity to enjoy three moderate flights without the need to recharge in between. The goal appears to have been achieved by observing that the total motor run time during the initial flight was 20 minutes 10 seconds. I have a fondness for models of this era since they are the ones I learned to fly on many years ago. If you have a similar view or would like to experience the characteristics of a vintage model, then consider building the E-Dawg.

Specifications: Wingspan: 40 in Motor: Axi Wing Area: 350 sq in ESC: Jeti 30-3P Advance Plus (with BEC) Weight (rtf): 39 oz (2 lb 7 oz) Battery: Kokam S1P (10 oz weight) Wing loading: 16 oz/ sq ft Prop: APC 10x5E Power: ~ 230 watts Power density: ~ 90 watts/ lb

Ray s Acro - Cutie part one The pictures shown here are of the original Cutie under construction about 4 years ago. I had just got into Electrics and this was a good trainer, but I soon got bored with it. All I could do was a few loops etc. Surely everyone knows it was designed by Larry Schribnick of SR Batteries. It was powered with a Speed 400 and ten cell pack. It flew well but a little heavy. Larry later came out with the Acro Pro powered with a Phasor brushless motor, at the same time he had a wing kit to convert the Cutie to an aileron model with a symmetrical airfoil. I built the wing, because it was a straight wing with a symmetrical airfoil, the performance was very sluggish and under powered (Speed 400). I was ready to sell the plane, I was not happy with it at all. Then I got a bright idea to use a Li-Poly battery 3 cell Kokam 1500 mah pack, it made a difference but still not what I was looking for. At this time Hobby Lobby was selling the PJS 800 motors at a huge discount, I thought that this might be the motor for the Cutie. I have since renamed the plane to Acro-Cutie. Well I took it to the field and flew it with the PJS 800 / Li-Poly combination and Bingo I hit the Jack Pot! You just have to see this plane perform with this combo, boy am I glad I did not sell it. So if anyone reading this has a Cutie hanging around because you became bored with it, try this combo and have a great new plane. The Schribnick trademark carbon fiber spars. The original Cutie without ailerons Ray Juschkus Continued The Original geared speed 400 on 10 cells.

Acro -Cutie Continued - This is now what I call the Acro-Cutie. It now has the PJS Motor and the new wing with ailerons and a symmetrical airfoil. I can fly it inverted and with the high wing it looks a little strange flying upside down. It rolls very nice and I do split S's with it also, it does outside loops with ease. It is not a power house but there is enough power to do most maneuvers. I was really ready to sell it with both wings and now it is one of my favorites. This model comes out with me on every flying day! - Ray Juschkus
