1 2013 Transportation Technology Deployment Report: Sacramento Clean Cities March 2014

2 The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Clean Cities program advances the nation's economic, environmental, and energy security by supporting local actions to reduce petroleum use in transportation. A national network of nearly 100 Clean Cities coalitions brings together stakeholders in the public and private sectors to deploy alternative and renewable fuels, idle-reduction measures, fuel economy improvements, and new transportation technologies, as they emerge. Every year, each Clean Cities coalition submits to DOE an annual report of its activities and accomplishments for the previous calendar year. Coalition coordinators, who lead the local coalitions, provide information and data via an online database managed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). The data characterize membership, funding, projects, and activities of the coalitions. The coordinators also submit data on the sales of alternative fuels, deployment of alternative fuel and hybrid electric, idle-reduction initiatives, fuel economy activities, and programs to reduce vehicle miles traveled. NREL and DOE analyze the data and translate them into petroleum-use and greenhouse gas reduction impacts for individual coalitions and the program as a whole. This report summarizes those impacts for Sacramento Clean Cities. To view aggregated data for all local coalitions that participate in the Clean Cities program, visit

MPG determined by converting fuel economy number for delivery step van to CNG fuel economy. General note: The best approach we used was contacting Terry Larson with 2012 information on the and asking Terry if it would be possible to update for UPS Heavy-Duty CNG 3 100% of time 71,659 gal tons Miles traveled per vehicle: 64,764 mi Average vehicle fuel economy: 3 MPGde Vehicle type: Truck: Semi-tailer 3 NG Yard shifters 12 hrs/day/vehicle in operation MPG etc. are estimates and/or default values. For further notes on UPS, see other UPS entry in alternative fuels section of this report. USPS Light-Duty E ,432 gal 79,462 gal tons Market: USPS 2013 David Dyer-Fleet Manager phone survey done; Amount of alternative fuel used-unknown, took annual report 2012 data for fuel used, divided by number of (474mpv). Miles per vehicle(474) multiplied by 2013 # of for 2013 gallons of alternative fuel used. This is a conservative estimate because the number of E85 stations in the region has increased and USPS is an EPAct regulated fleet. University of California, Davis Heavy-Duty Biodiesel (20%) 2013 See LD B20 entry for details on calculations of this entry and source ,250 gal 10,201 gal 93.5 tons University of California, Davis Heavy-Duty CNG ,800 GGE 278,177 gal tons 2013 Based on response from UC Davis Fleet Manager Richard Battersby. See B20 approach for a description of methodology. Essentially, stakeholder reported total fuel use, but in order to simplify our form, we do not require that the stakeholder differentiate between LD and HD fuel use (if it's even possible for them to do). This approach provides an accurate total alt fuel use number, as again the two numbers add up to total alt fuel use reported by stakeholder. Page 12 of 29 Clean Cities 2013 Annual Report Sacramento Clean Cities

13 University of California, Davis Light-Duty Biodiesel (20%) Vehicles Fuel Used GGE Reduced GHG Reduced 29 16,750 gal 4,080 gal 39.5 tons 2013 Based on response from UC Davis Fleet Manager, Richard Battersby gallons is based on Richard's response for B20 fuel use, less the estimated amount used by HD (this comes out the same total number, so there are no inaccuracies in what we're reporting). The way the LD use was calculated is: total gallons B20 used by fleet divided by total # using B20 to find the average B20 use per vehicle. This was multiplied by the number of LD for this entry, and the number of HD for the HD entry. Again, the LD + HD B20 use adds up to the total reported by UC Davis. University of California, Davis Light-Duty CNG 19 65,450 GGE 62,181 gal tons 2013 See HD CNG entry for details.
