For several years Baldor has been working toward this convergence of motors and electronics culminating in the introduction of the Baldor SmartMotor. Simply put, this breakthrough product combines adjustable speed control electronics with an industrial motor in one easy to install, easy to use, package. The Baldor Smartmotor is offered in NEMA 143TC through 215TC standard frames covering 1 through 10 horsepower ratings. It is also available in Washdown Duty and Close Coupled Pump models. And only Baldor provides you with the lab-tested Matched Performance curves showing the operating range for each rating. Making high performance drives easy to understand, easy to apply, and easy to teach was our challenge. We ve met the challenge head on and the result is the revolutionary Baldor SmartMotor. Motor and Control Compatibility - By integrating the control electronics to the motor in the design and manufacturing process, we solve many of the traditional compatibility problems. We take care of the sizing of the control to the motor, so you only need to size the drive to the load characteristics. We even make sizing to the load characteristics easy by providing a Matched Performance curve. Easy to Install - What could be easier? Just connect line power and control wiring (if necessary) and you re ready to run. You save the cost of the wire and conduit between the motor and control. Just another way Baldor adds value to our products - saving you time and money. Single Setup - How many hours have been spent trying to program a motor control to a particular motor s characteristics, only to be disappointed in the performance? The Baldor SmartMotor is a factory assembled motor drive. We even pre-program many of the normally required setup adjustments. A wide range of parameter adjustments are available through the 32 character keypad to tune the Baldor SmartMotor to your particular application. Reduces Reflected Wave Voltage - You may know this phenomenon by other names such as standing wave or voltage ring-up. If the distance between the motor and control is long, a standing wave can form between the motor and control. These standing waves can increase the voltage at the motor terminals causing the motor to fail prematurely. Locating the control near the motor can keep this problem from occurring. Until now it was not always possible to prevent long motor to control distances. The distance between the Baldor SmartMotor control and motor is measured in inches not feet. Saves Panel Space - Need to retrofit an existing fixed speed application to incorporate variable speed control and have no panel space to mount a motor control? Not a problem with the Baldor SmartMotor. Since the control electronics are incorporated onto the motor, you only need to supply power. Check the wire size going to your existing motor and you can probably use the existing wiring and conduit running to the motor location. 2

3 Baldor SmartMotor Applications Bridge and Trolley Drives - The Baldor SmartMotor is the perfect choice for Bridge and Trolley applications where panel space is limited. The compact design makes installation a snap. Just bring power and control logic signals to the Baldor SmartMotor and you are ready to go. We have even included C-face mounting as standard. With a Baldor SmartMotor you can adjust the acceleration and deceleration ramps to reduce sway of the lifted material. The built in dynamic and DC injection braking features provides controlled stopping for rapid loading and unloading. The Baldor SmartMotor is a smart choice for better control of cranes. Web Handling - From textiles to metal forming, if you are operating a web handler the Baldor SmartMotor is the right product. Whether you use helper drives or center winders the combination of motor and control electronics in the same package makes for easy installation and operation. The Baldor SmartMotor comes standard with C-face mounting so you can combine it with a Baldor speed reducer to increase the torque output. The Baldor SmartMotor control accepts a 4-20mA input for speed commands for easy connection to PLC controllers. Of course you can also connect 0-5VDC, and 0-10VDC, 5kOHM potentiometer, or use the optional keypad to command speed. The built in PID process control loop can also be used to eliminate an external process loop controller. Machine Tools - For small compact machinery the Baldor SmartMotor is the right choice to eliminate bulky electrical enclosures. Since the motor control electronics are an integral part of the motor, there is no additional wiring needed to connect two separate units. A Baldor SmartMotor is shown here operating an automotive rotor turning lathe. When you need to upgrade your machine to a variable speed, just bolt on a Baldor SmartMotor in place of the existing motor. You can even use the same power wiring. The Baldor SmartMotor keypad uses the same 32 character programming language found on many other Baldor control products. Other Typical Applications Fans and Pumps - The ultimate in Matched Performance is the Baldor SmartMotor used on a variable torque application such a centrifugal fan, blower, or pump. With a Baldor SmartMotor the mechanical vanes, dampers and actuators used to control flow can be eliminated along with their associated maintenance. The food processing oven shown, varies the speed of a blower with a Baldor SmartMotor. The air flow can be adjusted to control the food processing and additionally the amount of energy consumed can be reduced dramatically at low airflow rates. No need to worry if the motor and control are compatible in your application, we have taken care of matching the control to the motor for you. Environmental heating is the most damaging element for motor and control design. By utilizing a definite purpose power module we eliminate the potential for damaging heat generated from the motor or control. Simply taking a micro or mini inverter and mounting it to a motor can lead to premature failure of the motor control electronics that were not designed for high ambient temperatures. Patented TEFC Drive Cooling - By using the motor shaft mounted cooling fan we offer smaller package sizes and cost effective cooling for the motor and control. This patented design was refined over several generations of products and the result can be seen on the Baldor SmartMotor. High Efficient Inverter Duty Motor Designs - Building on Baldor s many years of experience in designing and manufacturing inverter duty motors, the Baldor SmartMotor incorporates the same design features as offered in our industry standard inverter duty motor product line. Some of the many features include Class H insulation system, 200 C Inverter Spike Resistant magnet wire, low loss motor lamination, precision rotor balance to half of NEMA s vibration standards, and anti-friction ball bearings are standard with Exxon POLYREX EM polyurea grease. DC Bus Powered Logic Supply - The control logic supply is powered from the controls internal DC Bus to insure high noise immunity and reliability. Additionally, the power loss ride through capability is increased when compared to designs using AC powered logic. The Baldor SmartMotor can even be operated directly from a DC source such as found in automotive air conditioners and other battery powered applications. 5

6 Matched Performance : The Perfect Motor and Control for Your Application Matched Performance is Baldor s solution to the concern, What kind of constant torque and constant horsepower speed range will I get with this combination of motor and motor control? Only Baldor provides Matched Performance curves that go beyond the typical performance curves and instead provides actual laboratory dynamometer test results. Each test is performed in Baldor s own engineering testing laboratory using advanced dynamometer equipment and digital power measurements. A typical Matched Performance test requires 2-4 days of continuous testing. This painstaking effort is another example of Baldor s commitment to providing customers the extra value to make our products easy to apply to your specific application needs. These curves show the continuous operating constant torque speed range that can be produced without exceeding Class F temperature rise in the motor. The lower Class F rise is selected to provide long life, even when a Class H insulation system is used. Peak Torque is the maximum amount of torque a Baldor SmartMotor can produce. This may be limited by the breakdown torque of the motor or the control s current-limited peak torque. Peak torque is available for momentary overloads or acceleration and deceleration requirements. The horsepower curve is simply a representation of how much power is available from the motor at any given operating speed. The horsepower curve can be used to size applications requiring constant horsepower operation. 9 Dynamic Braking Fast cycle times not only need controlled power to drive the motor up to speed but also require the motor drive to absorb generated energy when the motor is commanded to stop. Simple positioning applications require controlled stopping to bring the motor to a stop at just the right spot. All Baldor Standard C-Face (CSM) and Washdown C-Face (CWDSM) come standard with Dynamic Braking. The SmartMotors s built in dynamic braking circuit can handle 20% braking torque continuously. Stopping a motor faster than it would normally by coasting to a stop causes the motor to act as a generator. The generated energy during braking cycles needs to be removed from the motor control in order to prevent the control from tripping on an Overvoltage Fault. Dynamic Braking is the common method of transferring the generated energy from the motor to resistors that dissipate the energy from the motor drive as Heat. SPEED TIME BRAKING ENERGY Standard on All Baldor Motors: Exxon Polyrex EM Polyurea Grease It s a fact: Bearing failure is the #1 mechanical reason for motor failure. So the better the grease protecting those bearings, the better and longer the motor performs. Today, that better grease is Exxon s new Polyrex EM polyurea grease now standard on all Baldor SmartMotors. It provides lubrication life of more than four times greater than other polyurea greases in tests up to 350 F. It exhibits greater durability when subjected to mechanical shearing forces. Furthermore, a specially formulated additive in the grease resists washout, rust and corrosion even when subjected to salt water conditions. The run command can be given at the Keypad or the Control Terminal Strip. The Speed Profile is built by using the available Preset Speeds to set the profile speeds. Selection of the direction and time to run the Preset Speeds is individual to each Preset Speed. The number of run cycles is adjustable up to 254 or continuous run as an endless loop. 12 The Baldor Keypad The new Baldor keypad provides the flexibility and ease of use expected in today s controls. The 12 keys provide tactile response so you know a key has been pushed. The 32 character alpha-numeric display provides full parameter names to simplify programming, operation and monitoring. Parameter code number translation is not required. Keypads supplied on NEMA 1 and NEMA 4 controls carry a NEMA 4X rating when remotely mounted. The Baldor keypad is used on a variety of controls so when you know how to work with one you know them all. JOG Used to call up preprogrammed JOG speed. JOG Indicator Lights (JOG) - Green Lamp lights when JOG Speed is active. (FWD) - Green Lamp lights when FWD direction is commanded. (REV) - Green Lamp lights when REV direction is commanded. (STOP) - Red Lamp lights when motor STOP is commanded. LCD DISPLAY Displays control status including LOCAL or REMOTE operation, motor direction command, set value of each parameter/function, monitoring values such as output frequency and current, also displays fault conditions and log. PROG Used to access the block programming area. FWD Used to initiate a forward direction run of the motor. REV Used to initiate a reverse direction run of the motor. STOP Used to initiate a motor stop command. LOCAL Used to toggle between LOCAL and REMOTE operation. DISP Depressing this key changes the displayed control status. Also used to bring the lower block programming menu back to the monitoring menu. SHIFT Used to move the blinking cursor over one space for each push of the SHIFT key. RESET Used to initiate a logical reset after a fault condition and to take the block programming menu up one level. UP Used to change the display parameter or parameter value up one increment. ENTER Used to take the block programming menu down one level while saving any changes. DOWN Used to change the display parameter or parameter value down one increment. 12
