Newsletter of the Oakville Milton Flying Club FEBRUARY The Beast - DA100 power, flown by Nicholas Pinzon Photo by Mansoor Khan Great Lakes (Mike McDermott) In this issue: Minutes of February 2012 Meeting Formosa electric pylon racing Cat s Cradle Swap Shop Meeting and Events Calendar Our next club meeting is Monday March 5th at 7:30 pm Unit 13, 785 Pacific Rd. Oakville
OMFC Fliteline 2 Attention: All Potential Wings Students Ground School this year is Monday, May 7:00 pm ALL NEW STUDENTS MUST PRE-REGISTER WITH THE CFI BY MAY 7th CFI: Brian Anderson brian@virtuhost.com Minutes of February Meeting The meeting was brought to order by President John Pretty at 7:30 pm on Monday, February 6th with 35 members and 5 guests present. John reminded us of the Swap Meet coming up on the Sunday following the meeting. The Milton Static Display date has been finalized for Saturday, May 26th. More details will follow in subsequent newsletters. Also announced were the aircraft classifications for the upcoming Beauty Contest in May. These will be: Self Built, ARF and Previously Flown. As well, there will be a vote for Best Overall Model regardless of category. Again, more detail about this in upcoming newsletters. Jack Linghorne showed the members a kit of an electric (of course!) model called the Formosa. This is a smaller (35 wingspan) foam aircraft that is being used as a standardized pylon racer at some clubs in the area. The model is usually based on a GWS 350 motor, but other powerplants could be used to give different racing classes. The model is a foam kit, and comes as two fuselage halves, a one-piece wing, fiberglass wing reinforcement spar, horizontal stabilizer, hardware and a vacuum-formed cowl. It can also be purchased complete with motor. See Page 4 for some proposed racing requirements. his question to us was, What kind of plane was being flown? Looked very much like a de Havilland DH-4, but no-one was certain. Next on the agenda was the coffee break and the sale of raffle tickets. The items being raffled off today were all donated by the wife of Bill Chalmers, who was a long-time OMFC member. It was encouraging to see a number of new members signing up during the break. Seems several of our guests had come to join! After the break, we had our feature presentation by Eric Babin. Eric is an avid electric flyer and has spent the last few years compiling a web site and forum devoted to the basics of electric flying. Guest speaker Eric Babin and one of his electric models Ron Brown then had a variation on the name the plane theme. He got everyone s attention by asking if we knew who the Red Baron was chasing when he was shot down. The answer, of course, was Wop May. Turns out Wop May flew Ron s parents on their honeymoon after landing in a field where the ceremony took place. Ron had pictures of the event, and
OMFC Fliteline 3 In Eric`s own words: I started RC with a nitro Cadet LT 40 (I think that's what it was) in 98. I flew my trainer for a season and a half until the end of 99. Then, my personal situation changed and I was out of the hobby until I was living in an apartment and didn't want the mess of a nitro plane. By then I got back into the hobby with electric micro planes I was flying in my living room. Then a friend of mine showed me what was happening with electric planes on a larger scale. Wow! I was amazed at how much the electric side of the hobby changed since I was involved in it almost ten years back! I was hooked! I started devouring all the information I could get my hands on. I got lots of help from a few of the guys at my club (MMFC) and I just kept building plane after plane (or at least as many as my budget would allow). I started with a couple foamy electrics and then I graduated to bigger more acrobatic planes. The power was just impressive and I really enjoy the technical aspect of the electric power systems. After flying electrics for a couple years and suffering through the learning curve of figuring out proper power systems, I came up with the idea for ElectroFlightRC.com. A site where you could feed off the experience of others and also share your experience. I did a big knowledge dump of what I learned and documented it in the "Basics of Electric Flight" on the website. At the same time, I started development of the site which is now fully functional. I am still an avid flyer and still only fly electrics. His presentation led us through the web site, which is an excellent and well laid out site giving would-be electric flyers the basics, from definitions all the way to a search tool that will let them configure a model depending on its characteristics. Eric`s talk lasted almost an hour, and he covered motors, batteries, ESCs, connectors, useful tools and charging systems, just to name a few. This site would be a definite must-see for some-one who is just starting out into electric models most things you need to know at the beginning and laid out so you can easily find them. Eric`s website can be found at: For those of you who remember Ron Barr s DH-71 Tiger Moth from last year s Beauty Contest and Scale Rally, here s this year s effort from Ron a 1923 de Havilland DH-53 Humming Bird. Here s hoping we see the finished version at the May meeting (no pressure, Ron)!!

OMFC Fliteline 5 Cat s Cradle February is almost gone and we can finally see the end of winter (I hope!). As usual, the swap shop was awesome! Everyone should go to at least one of these events; the atmosphere is really incredible! There s so much good stuff available, especially early on. Even at the end of the meet, when all the good stuff is pretty well gone, it s really fun to wade through what is left and see what people are trying to get rid of. I ll bet some of it hasn t seen the light of day for decades!! But that old saying really holds true here, one person s junk is another person s treasure! So make a point of making it out to next year s Swap Shop it s worth the entry fee in entertainment value alone! Back on the home front, my current project is ARFing along quite nicely, thank you! Boy, what a difference in weight between an 80 s kit-built bipe (1/6 scale WACO) and a modern ARF bipe (1/5 scale Skybolt). Basically the same size, with the 80 s model weighing about 3-4 lbs more. Must be because there s about a quarter of the wood in the latter, not to mention laser-cut parts and lite-ply versus real ply. I haven t decided yet how good a thing that all is, but I guess they all look the same if you hit hard the ground hard enough!! Note to self land very gently! Why... Do I never get epoxy on my oldest jeans? Is the tip of my finger always just over the edge of the ruler when I cut Monokote? Is the product held together with chewing gum and the price tag put on with cyano? Does the package contain three when I need four? Why does it contain five when I need three? Why can t I even get the package open? The cover this month, as well as the two photos above, were taken by Mansoor Khan at our 2011 Air Show last June. Some really nice shots at Mansoor s online album. Have a look here:
OMFC Fliteline 6 Report on the 2012 Swap Meet The last few weeks of January and February have been relatively warm and dry, but fortunately the temperatures dove into the subzero range and the snow started flying just in time for Valentine s Day, and of course, the annual Toronto West Swap Meet. The high was supposed to reach 2C today, but the wind chill definitely made it feel like winter again. antique aircraft with everything in between. Terry Sears co-administered the event with me again, which yours truly really appreciated. Again this year, with much input and legwork by Terry, we were able to select a date that did not conflict with the annual football Superbowl in the U.S. or with any of the swap meets being held by other clubs in the region. Attendance this year was 84 paying attendees. This is down four persons from last year, but up 9 from Because of the snowy conditions, a lot of slush was carried into the hall on visitor s boots and we felt it only fair to pay for the extra clean-up that resulted. The results of the 2012 February s swap meet are as follows: Revenues Table Sales: $ Entrance fees 84 $ Total revenues $ Expenses We had a total of 27 tables of varying sizes available for rent. We charged the small tables out to vendors at $5 and the large ones out at $10. Jim Eichenberg supplied some tables for a silent auction, which were placed in the entrance way. All of the tables were occupied with toys ranging from some really mean looking IMAC type machines to Advertising $ Room Rental Cleaning Total Expenses $ Net Contribution to OMFC $449.50
OMFC Fliteline 7 Even yours truly managed to grab a bargain! The Aurora Swap Meet is only a month and Toledo is only two months away so summer is nearly here! I ll see you all at the flying field! Erik Wire Cutter Trick: Here s a neat workshop tip submitted by Dave Slote: Fill the cavities of the cutters with silicone while the jaws are open. Place a piece of plastic film or wax paper in jaws, close, and wrap with elastic band. When set the jaws will come apart easily. You can now cut a piece of music wire without having a ballistic missile shoot across your work shop! Try it. I knew about this for years but never got around to actually doing it...works perfectly.
