2 CUMTD is a small self governing transit district Carries 10 million riders/year Strategic Plan adopted in 2001 with goal of taking leadership in creating multimodal transportation system Sustainability is a high priority

3 MTD s Mission Leading the way to greater mobility MTD s Vision MTD goes beyond traditional boundaries to promote excellence in transportation Among MTD s Goals: MTD will encourage the use of alternative transportation services to promote mobility in our community Strategies included: MTD should lobby for transit friendly development and sustainable communities. Advocate bicycle/pedestrian access improvements

4 Commitment to encouraging and supporting mode shift to walking, biking, and transit since 2001 CUMTD began using soy biodiesel years ago and researching/ implementing sustainable practices in 2005 Long-term savings in operations, environmental impact, and benefits to the community motivated the agency APTA Sustainability Commitment offered a framework and structure to focus our efforts

5 Sustainability Committee appointed in summer 2008 Sustainability Committee began with self-education CUMTD signed the 2009 Pilot Phase of APTA Sustainability Commitment January 6, 2009 at Bronze Level (includes achieving 6 action items and establishing reduction targets of 2% over baseline in 1 year)

6 CUMTD Board adopted the Sustainability Action Plan in August 2009 Chose 2005 for baseline year Operations, maintenance and capital (internal process and policy driven): Water use reduction through selective vehicle washing - done Burning of motor oil to heat bus maintenance facility - done Installation of 4 DPF filters on buses done Conversion of all cleaning chemicals to green chemicals - done Supervisor vehicles operate on E85 fuel - done Hybrid buses purchased: 9 buses in operation by 2010; 27 buses in operation by 2014 Installation of a green/white roof on administrative building 2010 Geothermal system for administrative system 2010 Partnering with the U of I to use recycled cooking oil to operate vehicles during summer months to be evaluated

9 Why hybrid buses? Staff concluded total savings due to ISE Series Hybrid buses over lifespan would equal $200, or cost savings per mile of $0.26 (Brake life extended by 3-4 times & MPG improved by 30% on CBD routes.) Reduces fuel consumption by 20%- 30% Reduction in noise and air pollution (diesel particulate filter)

11 Improved efficiency of HVAC system operations by not running boilers in warm weather New 1.5 BTU high efficiency condensing boiler to reduce natural gas usage Software and hardware upgrade - lighting system allows control of lighting by section Installed frequency drives on all HVAC electric motors to significantly reduce peak electric usage Expanded bicycle parking

12 Software and hardware upgrade - HVAC system to regulate positive pressure on 1 st floor creating air curtain by using air that is currently vented outside Replacing bathroom fixtures with low water products Replacement of lighting with LED Beginning process to be LEED EB certified

13 Static pressure reset using Variable Air Volume Went from an average setting or 1.5InWC - 2.0InWc to an average setting of 0.7InWC for our static pressure settings.
