3 Storage is the holy grail of renewables Renewables, particularly Wind & Solar, generate electricity whenever the conditions are right. Wind - when the wind blows Solar when its daylight Generation does not necessarily occur when the electricity is needed Storage corrects this issue when grid connected and unlocks the true potential of Renewables.

4 Storage Solutions Electricity storage solutions are developing rapidly including:- Flywheel Compressed Air Pumped Storage (Hydro) Batteries Hydrogen / Fuel Cell Complete new storage technology being researched

5 Long term Storage not required Storage for long periods of time like remote non grid tied systems is not required Holding electricity for a few hours from when it is generated until it is required Storage in effect is a balancer to match demand on the grid This is the Storage Solution

6 Maximize value from Storage Example - Domestic with 4kWp of Solar 50% Export tariff still paid (4.77p/kWh) Do you size battery to take all Solar electricity and then feed back into house when it is required (all electricity consumed) Or size battery for what is expected to be exported and feed into house later (some electricity may still get exported) Economics will dictate the answer taking into account any transfer losses that occur Value of stored / used electricity is Utility price (16p)

8 Storage Predicted Market The growth of the storage market is likely to be rapid. Germany is stimulating their Storage market UK unlikely to provide a subsidy support mechanism (Government thought storage was 10/20 years away) Large systems could be classed as plant & equipment with possible tax concessions Needs to work with present renewable subsidies

9 Predicted Battery Price Reduction

10 Benefitting from EV development UK has attracted car manufacturers to build EV s and Hybrids UK has an EV battery plant Second hand EV batteries may be the route to stimulate the UK Storage market 3 to 4 year old EV batteries could have a second life as storage in Houses, Buildings or Grid support

11 Trials with old EV batteries Under the LCNF a number of trials are underway Nissan Leaf batteries installed in a shed and connected to the grid distribution system Nissan Leaf batteries installed in a few houses A second life for the batteries drives down EV costs but also provides an early low cost storage solution

13 Solving Grid issues - Solar With Storage connected to the grid distribution system could provide significant benefits:- 24 hour Storage Cycle Allowing increased generation of renewables balancing when it is injected into the grid (peak evening time, high value) Recharging storage overnight (low cost electricity) and re injecting the next morning (high value) Could avoid some grid upgrades & reduce numbers of standby power stations (potential huge value)

14 Standards At present there is little or no guidance on the application of Storage Standards have been developed for EV s but not for Storage in Buildings Storage could well be a rapid growth market and we need to establish standards now Help needed to produce a best practice Guidance document
