WELCOME TO HYBRID SOLAR POWER Welcome to the wonderful world of Clean Green Energy HYBRID SOLAR POWER Family,. Your solar electric power system from HYBRID SOLAR POWER enables your home to generate a portion of its own electrical power from sunlight. Your electric system has been engineered to provide many years of automatic operation without producing noise or air emissions and without requiring fuel or extensive mechanical maintenance Solar energy uses the sun to generate renewable power also known as green energy or clean energy and the most important and promising aspect is the Power produced by a solar electric system replaces the need for conventional power generation line diesel or coal generators. It is estimated that every kilowatt of installed solar generation prevents 6000kg of CO2 (associated with global warming) and 15kg of NOx (one source of smog) during its operating life. Every kilowatt/hour (kwh) generated by the system means less energy needed from your electric utility and that means lower electricity bills. We truly appreciate for your decision and your contribution towards environment by going for solar energy system. Thank you for choosing HYBRID SOLAR POWER. Hybrid Solar Power, Ph: Page 3 Page 3

How your system works: Solar Photovoltaic modules on your roof convert light into electricity (DC or Direct Current). The inverter converts this power into electricity compatible with the mains grid and the regular household appliances (AC or Alternating Current). The AC from the inverter is first used to run the appliances operating in your home and any excess power that is generated by the system or the power that is not required by your household is exported to the mains grid. If your PV system is not able to supply your daytime household requirements or if you require excess power during daytime additional electricity is supplied via the mains as normal. At night when sunlight is not available the inverter switches itself off and your household runs on regular mains electricity SOLAR PANEL MOUNTING SYSTEM MAIN GREED INVERTER A standard 1 kilowatt PV system will not produce 1kw of power continuously. Because of inefficiencies caused by non-optimal orientation and tilt of panels which is one of the major cause for inefficient system, manufacturing tolerances, dirt on panels, high panel temperatures, voltage losses over the cabling from the panels to the inverter and inverter inefficiencies, you will usually produce about 80% of the panel power rating (at peak times i.e. the middle of a sunny day). The output of a solar PV system depends on its size. The most common household systems are either 1 kilowatt (kw) or 1.5 kilowatts, although some property owners have installed systems of up to 10 kilowatts. The table below shows the average daily production of some common grid-connected systems throughout Australia. Average Daily Production By Solar Systems In Australia City 1 kw system 1.5 kw system 2.0 kw system 3.0 kw system 4.0 kw system Adelaide 4.2 kwh 6.3 kwh 8.4 kwh 12.6 kwh 16.8 kwh Brisbane 4.2 kwh 6.3 kwh 8.4 kwh 12.6 kwh 16.8 kwh Darwin 4.4 kwh 6.6 kwh 8.8 kwh 13.2 kwh 17.6 kwh Melbourne 3.6 kwh 5.4 kwh 7.2 kwh 10.8 kwh 14.4 kwh Perth 4.4 kwh 6.6 kwh 8.8 kwh 13.2 kwh 17.6 kwh Sydney 3.9 kwh 5.85 kwh 7.8 kwh 11.7 kwh 15.6 **Table courtesy, The Clean Energy Council. 5 These figures have been calculated using average peak sun hours for the area and are based on ideal orientation and tilt angle. These may vary depending on local environmental conditions and individual installation layout. These figures are estimates only. A typical Australian house consumes around 18 kilowatt hours (kwh) per day so a 1-2kW system displaces an average of 25-40% of your average electricity bill. Solar panels produce more energy in summer than they do in winter. All HYBRID SOLAR POWER PV grid connected systems meet the following design and installation standards: AS/NZS 3000 Wiring Rules AS/NZS 3008 Selection of Cables AS 4777 Grid connection of Energy Systems by Inverters AS/NZS 5033 Installation of PV Arrays AS 4509 Stand-alone Power Systems(some aspects of these standards are relevant to grid connected PV Systems) AS 1768 Lightning protection AS Wind Loads AS 2050 Installation of Roof Tiles What is the difference between energy and power? Power is instantaneous and is measured in watts (W). Energy is measured over time in Joules (j) or kilowatt hours (kwh). Energy is power multiplied by time. For example if you have a 100 w light bulb on for 10 hours, the energy you use is (and what you are charged) is 100 x 10 or 1000 w (i.e. 1 kwh). How does solar PV differ from solar hot water? Solar hot water uses the heat of the sun to heat water, a thermal process. Solar PV uses the light of the sun to create a flow of electrons into a solar cell and thus an electric current. This is called a photovoltaic (PV) process. There are also solar thermal plants that generate electricity these use the heat of the sun, usually concentrating onto mirrors to boil water and creating steam which powers conventional electrical turbines (similar to a coal fired power station using the sun instead of coal). Solar Credits Solar Energy is a clean energy resource in that it does not generate nor emit carbon to the atmosphere. This means the system is entitled to a credit which can be sold through the use of certificates and therefore offset some of the capital costs through the use of STC s Hybrid Solar Power, Ph:

STC S Each small scale Technology Certificate (formerly Renewable Energy Certificate (Recs)) represents the equivalent of one megawatt hour (mwh) of generated electricity from an accredited renewable energy source. The number of STC s you received depends on your installation in Australia, as well as its size. STC s can be traded for cash and the value fluctuates according to market conditions. STC s can be generated on a yearly basis, every 5 years or for a one off payment which covers 15 years (the most popular method for cashing in STC s). You can keep your STC s however this would disqualify you from claiming the maximum up front subsidy on your PV system. Energy use and feed in tariffs Calculating your benefit When solar panels are installed electricity is produced that is fed into the premises for consumption. The energy company does not charge for this energy as it is consumed without going through a meter. The majority of the benefit to the consumer is through this free electricity. The value to the consumer can be calculated by multiplying the energy produced and used by the rate which would normally be paid. To find out the amount of electricity used: Look at the LCD screen of the inverter. Push the system button ( usually an arrow shape) until your read ETotal. This may vary with some inverters. Read the value for ETotal. This is the amount of electricity made by your system since installation. Note the date and reading. Writing in a journal stored in meter box may be helpful. Read the value of the electricity exported. This value will be on the export meter. There will be instructions on the meter showing which codes refer to which values e.g. Energy Australia uses Code 93 for energy exported. Note the date and reading of exported energy. Deduct the number of kwh recorded on export meter from the etotal reading on the inverter. This result is the number of kwh used by the consumer. Energy exported will be detailed on energy bills and companies will credit you for power exported this way. The benefit for energy consumed directly will not show on the bill because it did not go through any meters but directly to the appliances that used it. Tips on reducing your energy consumption Use compact fluorescent lights or LED s instead of incandescent lights. Avoid using inefficient quartz halogen down lights. Turn off lights when out of the room for more than 5 minutes. Turn off at wall socket all appliances that have a standby function. Ensure all fridges and freezes are set at the correct temperature and that the door seals are in good condition. Using shading and cross ventilation to minimize the use of air conditioning for cooling. When buying new electrical appliances consider purchasing items that are efficient and have lower power consumptions. Replace an electric hot water tank with a solar hot water system. Install bulk insulation in your ceiling and walls, use curtains over windows and ensure you have adequate passive solar access in winter to minimize heating costs. Utilize off-peak tariffs for large electrical appliances such as pool pumps. Feed-in-tariffs A Net FIT is when you generate more power than you use at any time during the day. This excess is exported to the mains grid. In the past these FIT s were higher than currently paid to offset the high capital costs of the systems. Governments have withdrawn these higher tariffs now because of the lower capital costs The FIT s now are between 6c and 6 Ph: Hybrid Solar Page Power,

8c per kwh. This tariff is quite a lot higher than the rate paid to commercial power generators but reflects the contribution made by consumers in off setting the general cost of Energy Generation Infrastructure How to maximize your Solar Benefit The most benefit from your solar system can be gained by using as much power as you can when the sun is shining. Cooling or heating the house in the early afternoon to prepare for the night is more advantageous than using the mains power after the sun has set. Washing/drying/ironing clothes, using the dishwasher or running the pool during the peak sun are other examples of using free power when using the same appliances at night will incur charges from your energy supplier. Shutdown procedure To turn off the solar PV system in emergency situations or for maintenance: Open the AC circuit breaker marked solar supply main switch in the switchboard and/or the Isolator next to the inverter. Switch to the Off position. Open the PV Array main Switch circuit breaker on or next to the inverter Switch to the Off position To turn on the system reverse the procedure. System maintenance If you feel unsafe or are unsure please contact HYBRID SOLAR POWER for guidance or a maintenance request. Solar panels Caution Avoid working on roof surfaces in wet or unstable conditions to avoid injury. Use appropriate fall protection measures relevant to your situation. Do not perform work on roves if you are not comfortable or unsure how to do so safely. Safety Note: As most solar panels are located on the roof, it is highly recommended that some form of fall-protection equipment is used (scaffolding or safety harness) when inspecting the panels. Do not work on a wet roof and do not stand on panels. HYBRID SOLAR POWER will not be liable for any loss or injury caused by maintenance undertaken by anyone other than an authorized HYBRID SOLAR POWER technician. Every 3 months Clean dust off panels with water ( no detergent) if necessary Check mechanical integrity of array structure Check for shading due to vegetation or new structures Visually inspect electrical wiring for loose connections and corrosion. Do Not handle or alter any electrical wiring Hybrid Solar Power, Ph:

Warning Do not attempt to clean or repair panels that have cracked or broken glass. Isolate the system immediately and contact HYBRID SOLAR POWER.
