5 UNIT (Bldg 84) OVERVIEW OF AVAILABLE UNITS Original Use: Purification and recovery distillation system. Consists of two vacuum distillation columns (one available 00% of time and one 70%) with associated ancillary equipment, including vessels, pumps, vacuum pumps, exchangers, receivers, etc. UNIT 2 (Bldg 78) Note: This process currently operates approximately 4 months/yr on a campaign basis. It is idle/unused for approximately 8 months each year. The parallel small reactor noted below is not used in this operation. It, along with its hot oil system, etc, is idle/unused 00% of the time. However, it is still currently connected to and coupled with the operating process. Original Use: Continuous liquid phase endothermic reaction (50-75 psi/ F) process with feed pretreatment and post reaction purification. Consists of: A feedstock reactant treatment system with hold tanks. Two vacuum distillation columns with associated ancillary equipment, including vessels, pumps, vacuum pumps, exchangers, receivers, etc. Originally used for purification of the feed to the reactor. Two parallel reactors (one large, one small) with distillation columns flanged to the heads and condensers, vessels, pumps, etc., for purification of the vapor out-flow, internal coils with hot-oil recirculation systems, including vessels, pumps, gas fired heaters, etc., for heating the reactors. (See Note above regarding small reactor) Three pressure distillation columns with associated ancillary equipment, including vessels, pumps, exchangers, receivers, etc., for recovery of the feedstock exiting the reactor and purification of the product. Two scrubbing columns with associated ancillary equipment, including vessels, exchangers, pumps, receivers, etc., for removing and recovering the product from the waste non-condensable gas stream that exits the reactor. A system for collection of all the waste streams from the process and recovery of the feedstock contained in them via a vacuum distillation column with its associated ancillary equipment, including vessels, pumps, vacuum pumps, exchangers, receivers, etc. A centrifuge system and a parallel filtration system for recovery of the catalyst used in the reactor, which in the original use was a precious metal-based material. Includes feed and filtrate vessels, pumps, etc. Page 5 of 27
6 Two gas-fired hot-oil (550 F) recirculation systems for heating the reactors. Includes expansion tanks, pumps, gas-fired heaters, etc. (See note above regarding the small reactor and oil system) UNIT 3 (Bldg 54) Note: A portion of the equipment in this area is currently 00% utilized for another project. The Detailed Equipment List reflects only the specific equipment that is currently available. Original Use: Reaction of a ring compound to a chain polyol with subsequent processing and purification of the polyol. Consists of: An agitated, jacketed TR system with vent condenser, cooling, pumps, exchangers, etc. Parallel Teflon lined batch still pots with Hastalloy steam spargers and Teflon lined distillation columns for recovery of the unreacted feedstock. Neutralization and distillation system for purification of the recovered feedstock including columns, reboilers, vessels, exchangers, pumps, etc. Teflon lined neutralization and decant vessels with pumps, etc. Dehydration system consisting of distillation columns with associated periphery equipment. Parallel filtration systems with precoat tanks and body feed systems. Two stage solvent stripping system with each stage consisting of an evaporator and a stripper. The second stage operates under a vacuum. 4 stage steam jet vacuum system capable of 0 mm Hg abs. Solvent recovery and purification system consisting of two distillation towers with associated reboilers, reflux drums, pumps, etc. Waste water air stripping system consisting of tower, air blower and preheater, overheads condenser, tanks, pumps, etc. UNIT 4 (Bldg 45) Original Use: This unit was designed and constructed to be a multi-purpose pilot plant scale reaction and processing facility. Consists of small-scale multiple reactors, specialized equipment, and vessels of varying materials of construction and design conditions. By rerouting of piping and hoses, a wide variety of processing configurations can be obtained. Specific needs or requirements can be discussed upon inquiry. Page 6 of 27
7 UNIT 5 (Bldg 85) Original Use: Dehydrolysis or dewatering reaction of a diol to form H2O and product with subsequent drying and purification of the product. Consists of: A large kettle type high alloy reactor with a distillation column flanged to the top with a condenser, reflux drum and pump, etc. Rx equipped with an internal bayonet type U-bundle for heating. A small tank and pump system for feeding liquid catalyst to the reactor and a small neutralization system for treating the blowdown waste from the reactor. A drying and purification system downstream of the reactor consisting of three large, very tall, tray columns with associated reboilers, exchangers, vessels, pumps, etc. First column - Dewatering column: Removed the bulk of the water from the reaction by a solvent stripping distillation. Second column - Solvent drying column: Removed the water from the solvent from the first column and returned the solvent back to the first column. Operated under vacuum provided by a vacuum pump. System includes solvent storage and supply system and a waste blowdown collection system. Third column Purification column: Completed drying and purification of the overhead product from the first (dewatering) column. A product work tank system consisting of two large day tanks with a system for adding inhibitor to the product before transferring to storage. A vent collection and scrubbing system. UNIT 6 (Bldg 55) Original Use: Reaction of a ring compound to a chain polyol with subsequent processing and purification of the polyol. Consists of: An agitated, jacketed TR system with vent condenser, cooling, pumps, exchangers, etc. Parallel Teflon lined batch still pots with Hastalloy steam spargers and Teflon lined distillation columns for recovery of the unreacted feedstock.
