1 Acronal Optive 130 Opening the Door to High Performance at Low VOC All acrylic resin delivering high performance at low VOC for satin through gloss paints Acronal Optive 130 latex represents the leading edge in latex technology for low to zero VOC architectural paints - satin through gloss. As a result of BASF's long-term R&D efforts, Acronal Optive 130 latex can meet the current and pending VOC regulations for non-flats and gloss interior and exterior paints while maintaining the performance of higher VOC paints. To achieve low VOC, other latexes either have a low Tg or are formulated with high amounts of non-volatile film formers. Both of these solutions can lead to poor block resistance, poor early water resistance, and poorer dirt pickup resistance. Acronal Optive 130 is a multiphase latex with soft and hard phases on each latex particle. The soft phase provides continuous film formation, while the hard phase provides block resistance and dirt resistance. Since the soft phase does not require coalescent for film formation, Acronal Optive 130 latex can be formulated at 0 grams per liter (g/l) VOC with the proper selection of other raw materials. This also allows the paint formulator to add glycol up to 50 g/l to maximize open time and wet edge while still meeting the SCAQMD VOC regulations. A small amount, 2-3 pounds per 100 gallons, of coalescent may be necessary to achieve cold temperature cure below 40 F. 2 With over ten years of exposure, Acronal Optive 130 latex delivers equivalent performance compared to traditional VOC paints made with all acrylic latexes. The outstanding weatherability is demonstrated through gloss and color retention, grain crack resistance, and chalk resistance. Weathering has been tested in different climatic locations around the world. The excellent wet and dry adhesion of Acronal Optive 130 latex allows the formulation of paints that can cover a wide range of surface types and applications. MFFT ca. 2 4 C Particle Size ca um Performance of Acronal Optive 130 Through many years of testing, Acronal Optive 130 latex has been shown to deliver equal or better performance compared to latexes requiring higher levels of VOC for film formation. As shown in Table 1, formulating Acronal Optive 130 latex to 50 g/l VOC provides equal or better scrub, adhesion, block resistance, and low temperature cure than three conventional higher VOC latexes. Compared to a competitive low VOC capable acrylic latex, Acronal Optive 130 latex offers twice the abrasive scrub resistance and superior block resistance (See Table 1). 3 Coalescent Requirements Although Acronal Optive 130 latex is designed to be capable of zero VOC, the use of a small amount of coalescent provides some advantages. The performance enhancements are most apparent in scrub resistance and cold temperature cure. With the addition of two pounds per 100 gallons of Texanol coalescent, scrub resistance can be increased approximately 29 percent for semi gloss. In addition, cold temperature cure at 2 C can be improved from limited film formation to complete film formation. The added coalescent does not have any adverse affect on either adhesion or block resistance (See Table 2). 4 Acronal Optive with non-voc Film Formers Acronal Optive 130 latex can also be used with non-voc film formers, such as Pluracoat CA additives. The use of non-voc film formers allows the formulator to add more glycol for increased open time and wet edge, or to add more film former if the paint will be used in adverse conditions, such as new construction in cold climates. A comparison of Texanol coalescent to Pluracoat CA 120 film former shows only minor differences. The Pluracoat CA 120 offers a slight increase in scrub resistance (14 percent) while maintaining all other properties. Both formulations with Acronal Optive 130 latex outperform a commercial paint at 150 g/l VOC (See Table 3). 5 Acronal Optive 130 latex versus Plasticized Paint Another method to achieve the SCAQMD regulation limit of maximum 50 g/l VOC for non-flat paint is to add plasticizer in place of the coalescent and then reduce the amount of glycol in the formulation. Acronal Optive 130 latex, with Texanol coalescent, provides approximately three times the scrub resistance in a satin finish and approximately four times the scrub resistance in a semi gloss finish. A semi gloss paint made with Acronal Optive 130 offers equal adhesion compared to plasticized paint A and superior adhesion compared to plasticized paint B. Both satin and semi gloss paints formulated with Acronal Optive 130 latex deliver superior block resistance. Acronal Optive 130 latex also offers slightly better wet edge and open time (See Table 4). 6 Superior Titanium Dioxide Efficiency Acronal Optive 130 latex delivers superior titanium dioxide efficiency, allowing the paint formulator to reduce a portion of the titanium dioxide while maintaining wet and dry hide and tint strength. The paint formulator can typically reduce titanium dioxide between 7 and 10 percent in a white or white base paint, depending on the titanium source, type, and loading. The control formula contains 2.4 pounds per gallon of titanium dioxide and has 100 g/l VOC. Lowering VOC to meet SCAQMD and taking advantage of the superior titanium dioxide efficiency, can save the formulator from 15 to 40 cents per gallon in raw material costs (RMC) (See Table 5). In flat paints, Acronal Optive 130 has equal grain crack resistance compared to other all acrylic latexes (See Chart 1). In semi gloss paints, Acronal Optive 130 latex provides superior grain crack resistance, better gloss retention, and equivalent color retention (See Chart 2 and 3). Acronal Optive 130 latex performs well in deep bases, neutral bases, and ready mix colors. Compared to other low VOC latexes, Acronal Optive 130 latex offers better dirt pickup resistance, equal to the higher VOC control (See Picture 1).
