1 Overview Effective Date: July 1999 July 2004 This specification shall govern for containerized asphaltic concrete mixture intended primarily for cool to cold, wet weather repair of small pavement areas. Classification This specification includes two (2) classes of containerized asphaltic concretepatching material. Class I mixture shall meet the requirements for a rapid-curing asphaltic concrete. Class II mixture shall meet the requirements for a medium-curing asphaltic concrete. A mixture found to meet the requirements for Class I will be considered meeting the requirements for Class II. Properties of the Mixture Class I - Rapid-Curing Asphaltic Concrete General The mixture shall have good adhesion to wet surfaces and be resistant to water damage. It shall consist primarily of crushed stone, rapid-curing cutback asphalt, and additives. The mixture must be uniform and not require any remixing of the contents of a given container prior to use. Test Requirements When tested according to standard TxDOT test methods and ASTM procedures indicated, the mixture shall comply with the following requirements. The Materials & Pavements Section Director of the Construction Division has the discretion to waive any portion of the testing procedures when it has been determined that this waiving will not affect the acceptance decision. 5 Asphaltic Additives. One or more asphalt additives to prevent stripping of the asphalt from the aggregate in the presence of water and promote bonding to damp or wet surfaces shall be incorporated into the mixture. The additive(s) shall be added to the asphalt material at the point of origin or be metered in at the mix plant to provide a uniform concentration of the agent(s). Distillate. When an MC-800 is designated as the asphaltic material to be used, the Engineer may also direct that distillate in amounts not to exceed five (5) percent by weight of the MC-800 be added in order to extend stockpile life and improve cold weather workability. The distillate shall meet the requirements for No. 1 or No. 2 diesel, ASTM D 975, with the exception that the maximum water content shall not be greater than 0.2 percent. The distillate shall be metered into the mix plant separately from the MC-800, or with the permission of the Engineer, may be blended with the MC-800. Aggregate. The aggregate shall meet the requirements for aggregate as specified in Standard Specification "Item 334, Hot Mix-Cold Laid Asphaltic Concrete Pavement." General Testing. When tested according to Standard TxDOT's test methods, the mixture shall comply with the following requirements: General Testing Requirements Asphalt Content, Exclusive of Volatiles, percent by weight Hydrocarbon Volatile content of Mix, percent by weight Moisture Content of Mix (this requirement does not apply to mixtures produced at mixing temperatures of 79 C [174 F] or less), percent by weight 2.0 Hveem Stability at 60 C (140 F), percent (cured and molded in accordance with Test Method "Tex-206-F, Compacting Test Specimens of Bituminous Mixtures")** 35 **The requirements for Hveem Stability are applicable to mixtures with "Item 334, Hot Mix-Cold Laid Asphaltic Concrete Pavement," gradations only. Preparation of Mixture Class I - Rapid-Curing Asphaltic Concrete When required by the Engineer, trial batches shall be made with various asphalt contents and/or gradations. The Engineer may designate a job mix formula based upon the results of trial batch testing. Class II - Medium-Curing Asphaltic Concrete The mixture shall be plant mixed. All production equipment shall meet the requirements of Standard Specification "Item 334, Hot Mix-Cold Laid Concrete Pavement." The asphaltic material shall be heated in accordance with Article 300.3, Storage, Heating, and Application Temperatures. The application temperature for SCM I and SCM II shall be 77 ± 93 C (170 to 200 F) unless otherwise specified by the material supplier. The application temperature for AES-300S shall be as specified by the material supplier. The temperature of the bituminous mixture at the point of discharge from the mixer and the temperature of the aggregate, when mixed with bituminous material shall not exceed 93 C (200 F) unless otherwise approved Departmental Material Specifications 6 7/99-7/04
7 by the Engineer. The mixture shall be mixed until all of the aggregate is uniformly coated. Sampling for hydrocarbon volatile and moisture contents will be performed after the material has been placed in containers. Containers Class I and Class II mixtures shall be provided in airtight, resealable plastic buckets of fifteen- (15) to nineteen- (19) liter (four- [4] to five- [5] gallon) capacities.
