1 DMS (STOCKPILE STORAGE) EFFECTIVE DATES: AUGUST 2004 APRIL Description. This Specification governs for an asphaltic concrete mixture intended primarily as a cool to cold weather stockpile patching mix for maintenance. It will remain workable in the stockpile for six months and have good adhesion to wet surfaces. The length of satisfactory stockpiling and the lowest temperature at which it can be used will vary according to the type and grade of asphaltic binder specified. It is primarily a crushed-stone asphaltic-concrete with asphalt additives. The Engineer will designate on the plans or requisition which of the following combinations of asphalt and aggregate may be supplied, meeting all requirements listed in Table 1. Aggregate MC- 250 MC- 800 MC-800 w/diesel Table 1 Asphalt SCM I SCM II AES- 300S CMA SG Item 334 x x x x x Gradation I x x x x x x Gradation II x x x x x x x x Gradation III x x CMA WG Units of Measurements. B. Asphaltic Additives. Incorporate one or more asphalt additives into the mixture to prevent stripping of the asphalt from the aggregate in the presence of water and promote bonding to damp or wet surfaces. Add the additives to the asphalt material at the point of origin or meter in at the mix plant to provide a uniform concentration of the agents. The Engineer will approve the type and amount of additives used in the design stage based on the resistance to stripping, as described in Article and desired bonding and workability characteristics. C. Distillate. When an MC-800 is designated as the asphaltic material to be used, the Engineer may also direct that distillate in amounts not to exceed 5% by weight of the MC-800 be added in order to extend stockpile life and improve cold weather workability. Furnish the distillate that meets the requirements for No. 1 or No. 2 diesel, ASTM D 975, with the exception that the maximum water content does not exceed 0.2%. Meter the distillate into the mix plant separately from the MC-800, or with the permission of the Engineer, blend with the MC-800. D. Aggregate. Furnish aggregate that meets the requirements for aggregate as specified in Standard Specification Item 334. TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION /04 04/10
7 Mixture Properties. A. General Testing. Provide a mixture that complies with the following when tested according to standard Department test methods. Table 7 General Testing Requirements Asphalt Content, exclusive of volatiles, percent by weight Hydrocarbon Volatile Content of mix, percent by weight Moisture Content of mix (this requirement does not apply to mixtures produced at mixing temperatures of 79 C [174 F] or less), percent by weight Hveem Stability at 60 C (140 F), percent (cured and molded in accordance with Tex-206-F**) 35 **The requirements for Hveem Stability are applicable to mixtures with Item 334 gradations only. B. Mixture Design and Aggregate Gradation. The Engineer will designate on the plans or requisitions one or more of the gradation types specified in Standard Specification Item 334, for optimum density mixtures or of the open mixture gradations shown below. Design the mixtures to be produced with Item 334, gradation in accordance with Tex-204-F, and the asphalt content selected to result in laboratory density as follows. Table 8 Density (Percent) Minimum Maximum Optimum For mixtures to be produced with Gradation I, II, or III below, the Engineer will select the asphalt content within the range specified under Asphalt Content, below. Table 9 Percent Passing (by Weight) Sieve Size Gradation I Gradation II Gradation III 3/4" 100 1/2" /8" No No No No No AC %* *Allowed asphalt content range C. Resistance to Water Damage. The as-received mix will be evaluated for resistance to water damage by soaking a 100-g representative sample of the total mixture in 200 ml Min Max 2.0 TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION /04 04/10
8 (7 fl. oz.) of distilled or de-ionized water at 60 ±1 C (140 ±2 F) for 24 ±2 hours. The soaking test is performed in a glass beaker of approximately 400-ml (14 fl. oz.). Upon completion of the 24-hour soaking period, the mixture will be evaluated while submerged in the testing water. The material shall show no visible evidence of stripping Mixture Preparation. Provide a plant mixed mixture. Furnish all production equipment that meets the requirements of Standard Specification, Item 334. Heat the asphaltic material in accordance with Article When SCM I or SCM II is specified, apply SCM I and SCM II at 77 to 93 C (170 to 200 F), unless otherwise specified by the material supplier. When AES-300S and CMA is specified, apply AES-300S and CMA at the temperature specified by the material supplier. Unless otherwise approved by the Engineer, mix the aggregate with bituminous material at temperature not exceeding 93 C (200 F). Discharge the bituminous mixture at temperature not exceeding 93 C (200 F) at the point of discharge from the mixer unless otherwise approved by the Engineer. Mix the aggregate and bituminous material until all of the aggregate is uniformly coated Sampling and Testing. The District will sample and test asphaltic concrete patching material at the time of stockpile or delivery to the project site. Failing material will be rejected. The Department reserves the right to conduct random sampling of materials for testing. Department representatives may sample material from the manufacturing plant, the project site, and the stockpile. CST/M&P reserves the right to test samples to verify compliance with THIS Specification. The Department tests will govern in all circumstances. Costs of testing and sampling are normally borne by the Department. However, the costs of sampling and testing materials failing to conform to the requirements of this Specification are be borne by the contractor or supplier. Costs of sampling and testing failing material will be assessed at the rate established by the Director or CST/M&P and in effect at the time of testing Archived Versions.
