Test Procedure for VERIFYING THE ACCURACY OF LIQUID ADDITIVE METERING SYSTEMS Texas Department of Transportation TxDOT Designation: Tex-923-K Effective Date: August SCOPE 1.1 Use this method to determine the degree of accuracy of meters used to measure the flow of liquid additives into asphaltic concrete mixing plants. 1.2 The values given in parentheses (if provided) are not standard and may not be exact mathematical conversions. Use each system of units separately. Combining values from the two systems may result in nonconformance with the standard. 2. REFERENCES 2.1 Manufacturer s operations and maintenance manual for the specific type of: mix plant additive additional system. 3. APPARATUS 3.1 Bucket, 19 L (5 gal.) or larger. 3.2 Scale, with minimum capacity of 23 kg (50 lb.), readable to.05 kg (0.125 lb.) or less. 4. PROCEDURE 4.1 Measure the weight of the empty 19 L (5 gal.) bucket or larger container and record this weight as 'tare weight.' 4.2 Record the plant control setting for the asphalt and additive flow during calibration. 4.3 Record the asphalt and additive meter readings before and after each test run using the symbols under Section Use the additive by-pass valve to direct the flow of additive into the test bucket. Each test run will normally include at least 5 minutes of additive flow into the test bucket. The minimum additive test quantity is 15 L (4 gal.). Smaller quantities are permissible if the CONSTRUCTION DIVISION 1 6 EFFECTIVE DATE: AUGUST 1999
meter readout is in increments smaller than 0.4 L (0.1 gal.). Record the flow time in minutes as t f. 4.5 Record additive and asphalt temperature. 4.6 Measure the weight of bucket and additive. Subtract the tare weight of bucket to obtain the net weight of additive. Designate this weight as W d under Section Calculate the total weight of asphalt injected into the plant or circulated back into a tank during the test run using the equations listed under Section Calculate the total weight of additive as shown by the additive meter using the equations listed under Section Compare the measured weight of additive from Step 5 (W d ) with metered weight (A d ) and calculate the difference using the equations listed under Section To check the accuracy of additive addition rate, calculate the rate of additive addition using the equations listed under Section Should the percent deviation fail to meet accuracy requirements, the plant operator may elect to repeat the test before adjusting meter calibration or replacing the meter. If the second test also fails to meet the accuracy requirements, then the plant operator or other representative must make the necessary adjustments until the metering system meets the accuracy requirements This test method is not intended to include all detailed steps, which may vary with equipment manufacturer. The detailed step-by-step procedures given in the manufacturer's manual for verifying the calibration must be followed 5. CALCULATIONS 5.1 Designations: M ai = Asphalt meter reading before test run in liters (gallons) M di = Additive meter reading before test run in liters (gallons) M af = Asphalt meter reading after test run in liters (gallons) M df = Additive meter reading after test run in liters (gallons). 5.2 Calculate the total weight of asphalt injected into the plant or circulated back into a tank during the test run (refer to Section 4.7): A = ( M M ) G M W af ai Where: A w = Weight of asphalt injected into the plant or circulated back into a tank during the test run. Formula Constant = kg/m 3 ( lbs./u.s. gal.) at Specific Gravity of CONSTRUCTION DIVISION 2 6 EFFECTIVE DATE: AUGUST 1999
G = Specific Gravity of test asphalt at 15.5 C (60 F) M = Multiplier from Table 1 to adjust G to the actual asphalt temperature. 5.3 Calculate the total weight of additive as shown by the additive meter (refer to Section 4.8): A = ( M M ) G d df di Where: A d = Weight of additive G = Specific Gravity of additive at the addition temperature. 5.4 Compare the measured weight of additive from Step 5 (W d ) with metered weight (A d ) and calculate the difference (refer to Section 4.9): % Difference W d = A W d d 100 Where: W d = Measured weight of additive. 5.5 To check the accuracy of additive addition rate, calculate the rate of additive addition (refer to Section 4.10): Wd Additive rate (%) = 100 A w Note 1 The calibration additive temperature must be within -1 C (30 F) of the actual additive temperature anticipated during plant mixture production CONSTRUCTION DIVISION 3 6 EFFECTIVE DATE: AUGUST 1999
CONSTRUCTION DIVISION 4 6 EFFECTIVE DATE: AUGUST 1999
CONSTRUCTION DIVISION 5 6 EFFECTIVE DATE: AUGUST 1999
