3 NADA Retention Review: One-Year-Old Mainstream Models December s edition of Perspective is the second in a two-part series that details the one -year retention performance of all-new or heavily revised mainstream models, which follows last month s review of luxury model retention. Just as we did in our review of one-year-old luxury models, we provided retention figures for the most popular trim level of the mainstream vehicles as determined by its share of new vehicle sales. While retention for other styles (e.g., other trim levels or body and engine types) within a model lineup may be better or worse than ones provided, differences are generally small and do little to change the model s overall standing relative to either its competitive segment or to the outgoing model. The retention calculation is a function of a three month average (Oct. Dec. 2014) of NADA s average trade-in value divided by a vehicle s typically-equipped Manufacturer Suggest Retail Price (). Typically-equipped data was sourced from ALG and NADA Used Car Guide. Note that a vehicle s rate of depreciation, and ultimately retention, is in part a product of the level of discounting at the time of new. As such, s do not include any incentives or rebates available at the time of purchase. Chevrolet Corvette Stingray With a 6.2-liter V-8 engine rated at 455 horsepower and 460 foot-pounds of torque, the seventhgeneration 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray (also known as the C7) combines top-notch driving capability with spectacular styling. The rear-wheel drive muscle car can be configured either as a 6- speed automatic with paddle shifters or a 7-speed manual. The Corvette s estimated fuel economy is 17 mpg city and 29 mph highway for the manual, with both figures dropping by one mpg when equipped with the automatic. 4 Despite a nearly 7 percent increase in for a typically-equipped model, the wildly popular 2014 Corvette has done exceptionally well from a retention standpoint. Oneyear retention for the 2014 Stingray Coupe 1LT automatic stands at 84.7 percent, which is an improvement of 10.7-percentage points over the outgoing model and an impressive 14.7-percentage point lead over the average for the Upper Sport car segment. Equally notable is the fact that retention for the stunning new Corvette is the highest of all redesigned models for the 2014 model year Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Coupe 1LT Automatic $55,345 $46, % 2013 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe 1LT Automatic $51,845 $38, % Difference $3,500 $8, ppts 2014 Upper Sport Car Average 70.0% Chevrolet Impala Redesigned from the ground up for 2014, the Chevrolet Impala is a full-size sedan with front-wheel drive standard. It has an output of either 195 or 305 horsepower, produced by 2.5-liter 4-cylinder and 3.6- liter V-6 engines, respectively. The Impala comes with a 6-speed automatic transmission and its estimated fuel economy is 21 mpg city and 31 mpg highway. A hybrid model is also offered and can achieve up to 35 mpg highway. While the typically-equipped for a 2014 Impala rose by roughly $1,000 from the previous model, the average trade-in value improved by over $3,000, which translates to a 9.1-percentage point increase in one-year retention versus the 2013 version. 5 Chevrolet SS The Chevrolet SS full-size sport sedan is based on the Australian market Holden VF Commodore and was revived for 2014 to satiate fans of the discontinued Pontiac G8. With German luxury sport sedans as a benchmark, the rear-wheel-drive SS was developed to achieve a 0-60 mph sprint in just five seconds, thanks to its 425 horsepower 6.2-liter V-8 engine. Using a 6-speed automatic transmission that includes the company s TAPshift technology, fuel economy for the SS is estimated at 14 mpg city and 21 mpg highway. Although the 2014 SS has no previous model to compare against, one-year retention for the SS is above-average relative to its peer group. While the Upper Sport car one-year retention average is 70 percent for 2014 models, the 2014 Chevrolet SS 6.2L V-8 carries a retention figure of 71.6 percent. Typically-Equipped Average Trade-In 1-Year Retention 2014 Chevrolet SS 6.2L V8 $46,670 $33, % 2014 Upper Sport Car Average 70.0% Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Amid stiffening competition and the rising popularity of full-size pickups, Chevrolet completely redesigned its Silverado 1500 for 2014 and fitted it with an allaluminum range of engines, including a 5.3-liter V-8 EcoTec3 with 355 horsepower and 383 foot-pounds of torque. It s claimed to be the most full-efficient V-8 found in any full-size truck, with fuel economy checking in at 16 mpg city and 23 mpg highway. The 285 horsepower 4.3-liter V-6 is no slouch either, as Chevy claims it bests its Ford and Ram rivals with the most torque and highest tow rating of any standard V-6. 6 Comparing the 2014 Silverado Crew Cab LT 4WD 5.3L V-8 with the previous year s Extended Cab LT 4WD 5.3L V-8, the typically-equipped grew by over $3,000, yet the disparity in one-year retention is a significant 6.3-percentage points. The 2014 edition s 69.7 percent retention is also a solid 5-percentage points greater than the Large Pickup truck segment average Chevrolet Silverado Crew Cab LT 4WD 5.3L V8 $42,015 $29, % 2013 Chevrolet Extended Cab LT 4WD 5.3L V8 $38,970 $24, % Difference $3,045 $4, ppts 2014 Large Pickup Truck Average 64.7% FIAT 500L Following in the footsteps of the petite FIAT 500 compact car which was the Italian brand s first model upon its return to the U.S. market comes the 500L multi-purpose vehicle (MPV), which is a larger model based on its smaller sibling. Maintaining a flair and style that s distinctly Italian, but with four doors and room for five adults, the 500L offers more versatility and competes against vehicles such as the Kia Soul, Nissan Juke, Mini Cooper Clubman and Honda Fit. The car can be had with either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed Euro twin-clutch transmission, mated to a 160 horsepower turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine. The second U.S. offering from FIAT achieves an estimated 25 mpg city and 33 mpg highway. With regards to value retention, FIAT s first four-door subcompact is finding that being the new kid on the block isn t easy. While the 2014 Intermediate Subcompact car oneyear retention average is 62.4 percent, the retention for a 2014 FIAT 500L Pop 1.4L I4 Turbo is a mere 55.3 percent, which is 7.1-percentage points below the segment average Fiat 500L Pop 1.4L I4 Turbo $20,045 $11, % 2014 Int. 7 GMC Sierra 1500 With new powertrain options for 2014, the completely redesigned GMC Sierra 1500 full-size pickup are stronger and more fuel-efficient than ever before. The new 4.3-liter EcoTec3 V-6 (285 horsepower), 5.3-liter EcoTec3 V-8 (355 horsepower) and 6.2-liter EcoTec3 V-8 (420 horsepower) engine choices deliver the power to the rear wheels standard through a 6-speed automatic transmission, while optional 4WD can be selected with any of the three. Fuel economy for the V-6 is estimated at 18 mpg city and 24 mpg, while the 5.3L V-8 is rated at 16 mpg city and 23 mpg highway. Fuel economy for the 6.2L V-8 is rated at 14 mpg city and 17 mpg highway. At $43,830, the typically-equipped for a 2014 GMC Sierra Crew Cab SLE 4WD 5.3L V-8 is $5,000 more expensive than the 2013 Extended Cab SLE 4WD 5.3L V-8 it replaces, but its one-year retention improved by 7.2-percentage points. The 2014 Sierra s 72.7 percent retention separates the model even more from the 2014 Large Pickup truck average, which sits at 64.7 percent retention. A 2.4-liter Tigershark I-4 engine (184 horsepower/171 pound-foot of torque) comes standard, while a 3.2-liter Pentastar V-6 engine (271 horsepower/239 pound-foot of torque) is optional. Both are mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission. 8 differential available on the latter. Fuel economy for the I-4 is estimated at 21 mpg city and 28 mpg highway, while the V-6 is rated at 19 mpg city and 27 mpg highway. The Jeep Cherokee has been a strong performer both in new vehicle sales and used value retention. One-year retention for the 2014 Cherokee Sport 4WD 2.4L I-4 is 72.7 percent, which a few percentage points above the 2014 Compact Utility segment s 68.9 percent average. The full -size front-wheel drive luxury sedan is completely new for 2014 and is built on the same platform as the Hyundai Azera. Sharing the same 293 horsepower 3.3 -liter V-6 and 6-speed automatic transmission with its Hyundai cousin, the powertrain combination achieves an estimated 19 mpg city and 28 mpg highway. Kia has been fairly successful in its initial foray into premium territory, but the Cadenza is experiencing growing pains as far as value retention goes. One-year retention for a 2014 Cadenza Premium 3.3L V-6 comes in at 56.5 percent versus the 2014 Upper Midsize car average of 61.2 percent, representing a 4.7-percentage point disparity. 9 Kia Forte The compact Kia Forte sedan received a complete redesign for 2014, with longer, wider and lower proportions, improved performance and fuel economy, a more refined ride and more comfortable interior. Beneath the hood sits either a 148 horsepower 1.8-liter I-4 or an optional 173 horsepower 2.0-liter I-4 mated to either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission. Fuel economy for the Forte is estimated at 24 mpg city and 37 mpg highway, depending on engine and transmission selection. Even though the average trade-in value for the 2014 Kia Forte Sedan EX 2.0L I-4 grew by a few hundred dollars compared to last year s version, it was overshadowed by the model s $1,725 hike in price, which negatively affected its retention. Not only is the 2014 Forte s one-year retention 4.4-percentage points lower than the previous edition, the retention average for 2014 Intermediate Compact cars is also 3.4-percentage points higher. Compact Car Average 65.2% The 2014 Kia Soul compact hatchback is a redesign that, despite maintaining its familiar looks, is built on a brand new platform, which is more focused on ride, handling and overall refinement than before. Affordability, superior packaging and fuel efficiency remain hallmarks of the Soul, with the latter achieved using either a 130 horsepower 1.6-liter 4-cylinder or optional 164 horsepower 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine. 10 speed automatic with paddle shifters. Fuel economy is estimated at 26 mpg city and 36 mpg highway, depending on engine and transmission. Despite its significant redesign, the 2014 Kia Soul s retention fell to 68.7 percent from the outgoing 2013 model s figure of 72.3%. Even though retention fell, the 2014 Soul still sits over 6-percentage points above the Intermediate Subcompact car segment average of 62.4 percent. Mazda Mazda3 An all-new Mazda Mazda3 compact car was developed for 2014 displaying the company s new flowing Kodo design language in both sedan and 5- door hatchback forms. SkyActiv technologies are found throughout the vehicle and the 155 horsepower 2.0-liter 4-cylinder (6-speed manual or 6- speed automatic) and optional 184 horsepower 2.5- liter 4-cylinder (6-speed automatic only) engines do wonders for the vehicle s fuel mileage, while maintaining a fun driving experience. Fuel economy is estimated at 27 mpg city and 41 mpg highway, with efficiency supported by a new regenerative braking system. 11 Mazda3 s one-year retention is slightly above the Intermediate Compact car segment average of 65.2 percent. Mazda Mazda6 Preceding the release of the new Mazda3 was the Mazda6 mid-size sedan, which was redesigned for 2014 with a stunning exterior design and a spacious cabin full of high-quality soft-touch materials. The Kodo soul of motion design language was such a head-turner for the Mazda6 that the car was named a finalist for World Car Design of the Year. The sedan employs a 184 horsepower 2.5-liter SkyActiv-G directinjected 4-cylinder engine. Fuel economy for the Mazda6 equipped with the 6-speed automatic is estimated at 26 mpg city and 38 mpg highway. Mazda s redesigned 2014 Mazda6 has been warmly accepted. As a result, the 2014 s retention of 70.6 percent is nearly 12-percentage points above the outgoing model s score of 58.8 percent. Mid-Size Car Average 61.2% MINI Cooper Hardtop A division of BMW of North America, MINI made its U.S. debut in 2002 with the retro Cooper, which was made famous in the 2003 Hollywood remake of The Italian Job. For 2014, the brand released an all-new front-wheel-drive Cooper Hardtop that keeps MINI s familiar design, but is longer, wider and taller than last generation s model. 12 189 horsepower 2.0-liter twin-turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. Three transmission choices are available, including a 6-speed manual, 6-speed automatic, and 6-speed automatic with paddle shifters. Fuel economy for the base model is rated at 29 mpg city and 40 mpg highway, while the more powerful S can achieve 24 mpg city and 34 mpg highway. For the 2014 model year, the new Mini Cooper 1.5L I-3 Turbo actually became $1,500 less expensive than a similarly equipped 2013 model. The Mirage can be paired to a standard 5- speed manual transmission, or an optional continuously variable transmission (CVT). Fuel economy is within an EPA estimated range of 34 mpg city to 44 mpg highway, depending on transmission selection. Retention for the 2014 Mirage has been subpar. One-year retention for the 2014 Mirage DE 1.3L I-3 stands at 54.5 percent, over 10-percentage points lower than the Entry Subcompact car segment average of 64.8 percent. 13 Typically-Equipped Average Trade-In 1-Year Retention 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage DE 1.2L I3 $14,805 $8, % 2014 Entry Subcompact Car Average 64.8% Mitsubishi Outlander The Mitsubishi Outlander is all-new for 2014, with a new look that's more upright and rounded than that of its predecessor. The Outlander comes in frontwheel drive or four-wheel drive models, with a choice of 4-cylinder or V-6 engines, as before. Fuel efficiency is estimated at 25 mpg city to 31 mpg highway for the front-wheel drive version, and 24 mpg city and 29 mpg highway for four-wheel drive. Retention for the 2014 Outlander is below average. For 2014, it receives its first major redesign. The Rogue is all-new inside and out, with updated styling and more interior space. Though the new Rogue is not really any bigger than the outgoing model, the wheelbase is longer and the vehicle is taller, while the front overhang has gotten shorter. 14 has been steadily trickling down from luxury cars. The Rogue is powered by a 2.5-liter 4- cylinder engine that produces 170 horsepower and 175 foot-pounds of torque. It comes standard with front-wheel drive and a CVT automatic transmission, with an AWD option. Fuel economy for the front-wheel drive model is estimated at 26 mpg city and 33 mpg highway, while AWD versions can achieve 25 mpg city and 32 mpg highway. Retention for the 2014 Nissan Rogue has been above average. One-year retention for the 2014 Rogue S AWD stands at 73.1 percent, a figure 2.3-percentage points higher than the outgoing model s 70.8 percent figure. Styling on the base Forester has matured, while the turbocharged version distinguishes itself with a much more aggressive front fascia. The new vehicle is roomier than the one it replaces, even though external dimensions have only grown by a couple of inches. The 2014 Forester is powered by a horizontally-opposed 2.5-liter 4- cylinder engine that produces 170 horsepower. XT level trims are powered by a new 2.0- liter horizontally-opposed 4-cylinder turbocharged engine that produces 250 horsepower. Transmissions include a standard 6-speed manual and an optional CVT with manual shift mode. Fuel economy is estimated to be 24 mpg city and 32 mpg highway for the 2.5-liter, and 23 mpg city and 28 mpg highway for the 2.0-liter turbo. Outside, the front grille and headlights have been revised. Inside, the instrument panel is new and every 4Runner trim gets a touchscreen-based infotainment system with Toyota's Entune smartphone integration. The revamped 2014 Toyota 4Runner is powered by a 4.0- liter V-6 engine that produces 270 horsepower and 278 foot-pounds of torque. Rear-wheel and fourwheel drivetrains are paired with a standard 5-speed automatic transmission. Rearwheel drive fuel economy is estimated at 17 mpg city and 22 mpg highway, while city and highway ratings for four-wheel drive models are 17 mpg and 21 mpg, respectively. Despite all of the Runner s updates, used value retention has been depressed compared to the 2013 model year. One-year retention for the Runner SR5 4WD stands relatively high at 77.1 percent, however, its score is down significantly from the Runner s 85.1 percent figure recorded last year. The Runner s retention is nearly 10-percentage points higher than the Mid-size Utility segment average of 67.6 percent. 16 Toyota Corolla The Toyota Corolla is completely redesigned for The new car boasts a much more stylish and aggressive look than in years past, with standard LED headlights and an overall longer, lower and wider presence. The result is a larger cabin for passenger comfort, including more legroom. Inside, the Corolla features premium materials and improved standard features with plenty of technology to keep owners connected to the information and entertainment they crave. A CVT is now available, which boosts fuel efficiency in automatic-equipped Corollas to 29 mpg city and 38 mpg highway. The Corolla has traditionally been a solid retention performer and the 2014 model continues to carry the torch.
