1 August/September 2016 Dixie Olds Club Board President Vice President Secretary Treasurer Chapter Representative Doug Williams Stefan Bartelski Nancy Wilson Vicki Mell Joe Fotschky Next Meeting Saturday, September 3, :00 pm Delkwood Grill 2769 Delk Road SE Marietta, GA Phone: We will finalize any outstanding plans for The Gathering show that will take place in October. Delk Road is Exit 261 on I-75. The Delkwood Grill is approximately 1 mile East of I-75. The Delkwood Grill will be on the North side of the road, if you cross Powers Ferry Road you have gone too far. July was an exciting month for many of us in the Dixie Olds Club. We arrived back in Atlanta after a week in Kingsport, Tennessee for the 2016 Oldsmobile National Meet. It was an incredibly fun week that included tours of the Birthplace of Country Music Museum and Bristol Motor Speedway. Many of us also experienced the thrill of driving our Oldsmobiles around the track. And best of all, the show field was loaded with sparkling Oldsmobiles from the 20 s and 30 s through the final 500 models. This year s show featured one of the largest swap meets in quite some time. Over 60 vendors in attendance with a huge selection of parts and other items. A number of Dixie Olds attendees returned with awards including Best of Class. The Meadowview Marriott was a fabulous facility with great food, outstanding service and very comfortable accommodations. It was a week we will remember for years to come. For those who graciously volunteered during the week we would like to extend to you our sincere thanks. Without your help this event would not have been a success. We would also like to thank the members of the Music City Rockets who were our co-hosts and also volunteered much of their time to make our event a huge success. Rocket Review A Message from your Dixie Olds President 2016 Nationals Kingsport, Tennessee July Next Chapter Meeting Our next chapter meeting of the Dixie Olds Club will be Saturday, September 3, 2016 at 1:00 pm at the Delkwood Grill in Marietta. We will be finalizing our plans for The Gathering in October and welcome your input and participation to make this another great Oldsmobile event. We ve recently had very good attendance at our chapter meetings and would encourage and welcome members who are in the metro-atlanta area to join us whenever possible. The Delkwood Grill has a great lunch menu and we get to socialize with fellow members and guest before getting down to Oldsmobile business. One of the great things to come out of our recent work on the Olds Nationals event is how much our members enthusiasm for Oldsmobile and the welcoming atmosphere they present is contagious. More and more folks are discovering this every day through our web site and Facebook Page as well as in person at our meetings and events. Consequently our membership is on the rise as we ve added 9 new members in 2016 alone. Many thanks to all of our members for your contributions of time and effort in making this a great organization. The Gathering Win $100! The Gathering, our all Oldsmobile cruise in, car show and swap meet is set for October 7-8, 2016 in downtown Cartersville, GA. This year, when you Continued on Page 5
2 2016 Olds Nationals It s a Wrap! This year s Olds Nationals in Kingsport, TN was a huge success if we do say so ourselves! As you all know, the Dixie Olds Club co-hosted this event with the Music City Rockets from Nashville, TN and we ve had a lot of positive feedback as evidenced by the comments on the Oldsmobile Club of America Facebook page. Additionally, our chapters have received the several ed letters of thanks from other OCA chapters in attendence at this year s event (see page 3 for these letters). All of this success would not have been possible without the exceptional leadership from both clubs and the countless hours all of the volunteers put in before, during and after the event. We are truly blessed to have such a great group of folks in our collective organizations. OUR AWESOME VOLUNTEERS Rocket Review Page 2 August/September 2016 The Dixie Olds Club and the Music City Rockets have THE BEST members! And those bright orange shirts you couldn t miss em! Led by Cynthia Williams, the following volunteers displayed true, southern hospitality at the 2016 Olds Nationals and made a huge impact on the success of this year s event. 3 Rocket Review To: Brad Long, Doug Williams From: Tom Aukzemas Date: Thursday, Aug 11, 2016 Subject: OCA Nats - Thanks! Brad and Doug, To you, and all the members of the Music City Rockets and Dixie Olds club, thank you for hosting this year s OCA Nationals! Overall nice job and was a great event. Myself, and my family, had a fun time at the Nats and in the area and will never forget driving on Bristol - what a blast! Hopefully you are getting back to normal now, however, I may contact you in the future about specifics on hosting Nats, as our chapter is evaluating helping out for the 2018 Nats in Gettysburg. Thanks again and take care, Tom Aukzemas VP, DVOC 2004 Final 500 Alero convertible To: Doug Williams, Brad Long, and Lynn Shipley From: Gene Bossaller Date: Tue, Jul 26, 2016 Subject: Thank You for Hosting the 2016 OCA Nationals To: Doug Williams From: Bill Gale Date: Sun, Jul 31, 2016 Subject: Olds Nationals Wrap Doug, Please pass on to your team our thanks and appreciation for all your hard work in making the Nats a great experience! Well organized and prepared, your members did a great job of hosting the show. All of our DVOC members had a great time, despite the... ahem... warmer temperatures. :) We all got home with no issues, although Paul Andreas ( 66 Toro) made the run with no AC as a precaution due to temp issues. I hope to read a bunch of similar positive comments in upcoming JWO issues. As you know, the 2018 Nats will be in Gettysburg PA and while we haven t been formally asked to help with the show, as one of the closest clubs to the site, we anticipate that request any day now. Jerry Wilson also spoke to me briefly about it and along those lines, I have a request once things settle down, could you send me any info you have available as to overall planning details for your show, along with what went right, problems/issues, Good morning Gentlemen. I hope you all have taken a deep breath and realized you have just hosted the best OCA National event and now you can relax and enjoy these memories. The Archway Oldsmobile club members who attended (38) your event, had a great experience and we wish to thank you all for your service and support to our membership. The Meadowview Marriott Conference Resort and Convention Center was the best venue to have this large of an event, complete with professional staff support and the best conference rooms available. The Music City Rockets and Dixie Olds Club combined did a wonderful job all week long and the tours and events were a new experience for us. The members of the Archway Oldsmobile Club wish to extend our appreciation to both host clubs for having a relaxing, wonderful week with our lifelong friends of the Oldsmobile Club of America that we see once a year and which allows us to enjoy our cars and our hobby together. Relax and enjoy your success. Gene Bossaller Archway Oldsmobile Club President Join us on DixieOldsClub what wasn t addressed, and what could/ should have been done differently? Your experiences can be a big help in planning future events. I d like to start thinking about how our club will be involved, and what our needs will be. As I ve probably mentioned before, I ve had a lot of experience over the years working with, and as one of, the staff at our annual WWII Weekend ( From my perspective there are some similarities as to planning needs, so I hope to be able to use what I ve learned to help the 18 Nats be as good at the 16. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks again for a great show and I ll be posting some pics soon. Your 73 is awesome, glad you shared it. Great job also of emceeing the banquet..i hope to post a shot of you at the podium. Looking forward to catching up with you soon. Our thanks also to your bride, she seemed to be everywhere at the same time, keeping things going. All the best, Bill Gale Page 3 August/September 2016

6 Rocket Review Journey with Olds A Salute to Heroes This past May 2016, the Oldsmobile Club of America s official magazine, Journey with Olds, dedicated an entire issue to veterans and their Oldsmobiles. Shannon Olson, editor of JWO, requested input from each OCA chapter and asked any and all veterans with Olds to submit their stories and accompanying pictures. As you might imagine, this issue has been very well received and OCA has made available a few extra copies for those who didn t receive one or would like an extra copy. We only have a small number left so please me at amybecham@mindspring.com and I ll be happy to mail a copy to you while the supply lasts. Due to the positive response and reception of the Veterans issue, Shannon is planning another special issue that will feature stories from members (and nonmembers) who are, or have been, police officers, fire fighters and/or EMTs and share a love for Oldsmobiles The issue will naturally be called A Salute to Heroes: First Responders & Their Oldsmobiles and is slated for distribution in May If you currently or previously held one of these roles, we would like to know about it and have you included in this special issue. Very soon, Shannon will reach out to all OCA chapters asking for their lists of First Responders, just as she did with the Veterans. Her goal with this special issue is the same as before and that is to thank all who have devoted their lives to public service and safety. Please let me know who you are so we can begin compiling our list and ensure your story is included me at amybecham@mindspring.com. Page 6 August/September 2016 MEMBERSHIP DUES ARE DUE!
