1963 Grand Sport Saw this car at the Revs Institute in Naples Florida. It is one of the 5 Corvette Grand sports built in 1963, I believe they did 3 coupes and 2 convertibles. A true piece of Corvette history and an original one that has been saved and still raced at vintage sports car races, but very carefully. Amazing car. Ken Kaczka 10
REMEMBER, IT IS ALL CHOCOLATE. A train made entirely of chocolate has set a new Guinness World Record as the longest chocolate structure in the world... The sculpture, on display at the busy Brussels South station, is 112-feet (34.05 meters) long and weighs over 2,755 pounds (1250 kilos). Maltese chocolate artist Andrew Farrugia spent over 700 hours constructing the masterpiece. He said he came up with the idea of the train last year after visiting the Belgian Chocolate Festival in Bruge: "I had this idea for a while, and I said what do you think if we do this realization of a long chocolate train, you know, because a train you can make it as long as you like. There are two parts to the train. The first seven wagons are modeled after the new Belgian trains, and the rest of the train is modeled after the old train wagons, including a wagon with a bar and restaurant on board. Three days before the event, Farrugia transported the chocolate train by truck in 25 wooden boxes from Malta to Belgium. 11
Farrugia said the train incurred considerable damage during the drive and several of the train's walls had completely collapsed. Luckily, with hard work and little sleep, the chocolate artist was able to fix all the damages before presenting the train to the public on Monday. After measuring the length of the train and confirming no material other than chocolate was used, officials from the Guinness Book of World Records added a new category to the collection of world records and declared the train to be the longest chocolate structure in the world. 14 Greetings Corvettes of Buffalo Club Members, Prospective Member Article I m Janet Craft and I have been encouraged by my husband and fellow COB member, Mark Craft, to join the COB club with him so we can have an activity we can do together and to meet new friends who have a mutual love for fine automobiles. It all began on a beautiful fall day last September when Mark led me by the hand, in my stocking feet and eyes closed out of our house to the driveway. Well, surprises and impulsiveness are not my husband s usual style So I could only guess a long lost friend or relative had come to visit or that he got me a puppy. To my surprise and shock, there in the driveway sat a white 2017 Grand Sport Corvette. And so began our new adventure into the world of Corvettes. Now that our two sons are grown we had been looking for something we could enjoy together and to spend their inheritances on! I hope to become a member of COB and getting to know all of you at the club events. I ll be the one carrying a camera as I also have a passion for photography and taking pictures of cars. 17 Prospective Member Article My Corvette Journey As a kid, I always loved the 63-split window coupe. I would dream of owning one, and having it be my pride and joy. I knew that my dream was just that, a dream. With the price of that model soaring I knew that I would not be able to afford it. But my dream of owning a Corvette was still alive. In the summer of 2001, I was at a wedding. One of the guests just bought a 1976 Corvette. He told me to go out and look at it and take it for a ride around the block. How could I refuse that offer? It was the beginning of the end. In the summer of 2006, I was looking on EBay, and saw a 1975 that was for sale. The owner was in Wilson, NY and had his number listed. I took a chance and called. He told me it was still available, so I went out to look at it. It was not what I expected. The paint was awful, the interior was worse. The seat backs were broke, the carpets were gone and the floor was wet. My guess was a bad heater core. And I was right. He told me that he had offers, but none of them were close to his asking price. I could see why. He was asking $ , but the highest he was offered was $ I offered him $ , knowing that the car had good bones to it. But that was turned down. I left my phone number with him and said if you have a change of mind to give me a call. 2 days later my phone rang and it was him. He says that he will take the $ I told him I had an offer in on another car that was in better shape (I lied). The next thing out of his mouth surprised me to no end, "give me $ and it's yours". I was at his house 2 hours later. That was Labor Day weekend of I drove it like it was for the rest of the summer, fixing what it needed to pass inspection. When October came around it was parked in the garage, and the demolition was started. The engine and transmission were removed and set aside. The interior was totally removed and judged as to what could be reused and what needed to be replaced. The first of my purchases were the front and rear bumper covers. While waiting for those to come in, I stripped the paint and did some repair work to the body. After the bumper covers were put on, it was loaded on a trailer and sent off to LA Rocks restoration in Niagara Falls for paint. While waiting for it to come home, I had an engine built at Gor-Den racing engines, and ordered a Tremec 5 speed transmission and hydraulic clutch. The interior parts were also ordered, seat foam, seat covers, Dash pad, carpets and door panels. 17
In March of 2008, the car was back in my garage and the assembly started. Many late nights and weekends were put in. It all came together in what seemed to be no time. The day I turned the key and fired it up was one of the best feelings. To this day, I feel the pride of the work I did, knowing that I never attempted anything like this before. The final outcome was that I had a car I was proud of and was more than willing to let people know that did I it. Corvette owners always told me that if you drive a Corvette, you will own one sooner or later. Mine may have been later, but I sure am glad that I do own one. This is the one that started it all. Ken and Cheryl Bushley ************************************************* Trivia... Ford, who made the first pick-up trucks, shipped them to dealers in crates that the new owners had to assemble using the crates as the beds of the trucks. The new owners had to go to the dealers to get them, thus they had to "pick-up" the trucks. And now you know the "rest of the story." 18
Prospective Member Article A History with Sports Cars Sports cars have been my interest and hobby for over 50 years. In my early 20s, the first foreign car I owned, albeit not a sports car, was a Morris Minor convertible. While not too fast or agile, it was a lot of fun to drive. I then went to a powder blue 1962 Triumph TR3. Had it not been totaled by a hit and run driver, I might still have it today. Next was a black TR4 and then the first Corvette. While still single, in 1966 I bought a 1962 Corvette, black with red interior (just like the one that went into the hole at the National Corvette Museum) and two tops. It was my only car so I drove it during the winter snow as well as the summer sun. My wife and I were married in 1967 and our first child was born in He could ride on my wife s lap so everything was great with the Vette. In 72 our second son was born and, there being no more room in the Corvette, I sold it. Don t ask for how much! A station wagon took its place. A number of years past and I dabbled with a burned 1962 Austin Healy 3000 that came out of a warehouse in Lockport. Myself, my wife and a friend restored it and I drove it for a year or two. Next was a 1960 MGA in boxes for $600. I gave up on that project early on and gave it to my son who not only completed an excellent restoration but also sold it for more than $14,000. In the 1980s, I admired a 1969 Tuxedo black Corvette coupe, 350/350 4 speed, owned by a teacher that my wife taught with. A few days before Christmas, the guys that I worked with got me to go out into the parking lot and there sat the 69 Corvette with a big red bow on it. My wife had bought it and arranged the whole surprise. I finally sold it in 2014 for more than twice what she paid for it. I had owned it for nearly 30 years. Of course, I had put a bunch of money into it over the years. During those years, I bought a primrose yellow 1969 Jaguar XKE 2+2 on ebay. My son and I picked it up outside of Detroit and trailered it home. After several years and some sporadic restoration work, I sold it on ebay to a person in Poland. I never got it on the road. 19
In 2012, while I still owned the 69 Corvette, I again fell prey to ebay and bought a 2006 BMW Z4 M with some inheritance money. My wife and I flew to Atlanta and drove it home. Finally, this past fall I found a 2015 Corvette convertible, Z51, Night Race Blue Metallic with light grey interior, for sale on the internet at a Land Rover dealership outside of Chicago. I had a local auto dealer buy it and haul it to WNY where I traded the BMW and a certain amount of cash. The BMW trade, plus the money from the 69 Corvette plus money from a yet to be sold Harley Davidson get close to the cost of the Of course, it is a manual! 25 What Makes Chevrolet Corvettes So Affordable Compared to Other Sports Cars? Why are Chevrolet Corvettes so cheap? A simple answer: there is no difference between the Chevy Silverado and Corvette. They both use the same engine, they are both mass produced, and they both are made using similar materials. A good car to compare the Corvette C7 Grand Sport to is the Ferrari California T. Performance is roughly the same, both use V8 engines, and yet the Corvette costs less than 1/3 the price of the Ferrari. Why? 1.Engine The Ferrari engine is hand built in a clean room, whereas the Corvette engine is mass produced on an assembly line. Chevrolet makes hundreds of thousands of Corvettes engines each year, since several Chevrolet cars use the Corvette engine: Camaro, Silverado, Escalade, etc. The Corvette engine is simply fine-tuned a bit to increase horsepower, noise, and efficiency, but the tuning process isn t too difficult. On the downside, the Ferrari can redline at 8000 rpm, while the Corvette redlines at 6500 rpm. Other than that, the Corvette engine can definitely match the Ferrari engine. 25
The Corvette engine is as powerful, effective, and smooth as the Ferrari engine, but remember that the Corvette engine will last way longer than the Ferrari engine. 2.Interior Materials The interior materials found in the Corvette can also be found in a Camaro, Impala, Silverado and Escalade. Sure, they may have cool colors and interesting stitching, but the bottom line is that the materials in the Corvette are functional and simple. They work. The Ferrari? Well, only premium leather is found in the Ferrari. All stitching is done by hand. Carbon fiber lines the dashboard. There are absolutely no cracks or gaps. Everything lines up. The attention to detail is extreme, as every crease, fold, and line must be done to perfection. Any downside? No. The Corvette leather is as comfortable as the Ferrari leather, the interior is equally well made, and the Corvette is far more functional and technologically advanced than the Ferrari. Who cares if there s a small gap here and the stitching is a millimeter off there? It works. That s all that matters. 3.Assembly The Corvette is manufactured on an assembly line. Each year, tens of thousands of Corvettes are produced. Ferrari, on the other hand, produced only 7,500 vehicles per year (they have four models). Mass production drives the price of the Corvette down. In fact, the Corvette and Chevy Silverado are produced using similar assembly lines. In short, while the Corvette definitely uses mechanical parts more expensive than other Chevrolet cars, it is simply a more expensive Camaro. Supercar performance only costs $70,000 - you need to tune the engine, improve the brakes, upgrade the material parts, lower the drag coefficient, and viola! You have your sports car. No need for using a microscope to check whether every piece of leather is within ten microns of the specifications. A Ferrari is a prestige symbol, while a Corvette is a practical sports car. You can definitely drive a Corvette every day (they don t break down too often), but good luck driving your Ferrari a few months without the check engine light turning on. If you want a car which you can enjoy every day, get the Corvette. And if your company just sold for millions of dollars, get the Ferrari as a weekend car (trust me, the engine noise and prestige driving the Ferrari is inimitable). Or if you really can t decide, get both. You ll be in love with your Corvette much more. 26
1962 Firemist Gold Corvette Styling Car at Mecum Posted on January 13, 2017 Posted in Corvette Features, Corvette History, Corvettes at Auction. Reprinted with the permission of In this article, we will look at the history of the one and only 1962 Firemist Gold Corvette Styling Car that is at the Mecum Auction in Kissimmee, Florida. During the 1960s, General Motors Styling Department produced a few experimental Corvettes. These rare cars were for important people and special occasions. They had unique Shop Order numbers. Notables such as Harley Ear, Bill Mitchel and Bunkie Knudsen received such cars. This is the case for this 1962 Corvette Styling Car. Its shop Order number is When Chevrolet celebrated it Golden anniversary in 1962, they did a special paint scheme on the 1962 Impala. They painted the Impala Anniversary Gold with the Yellow-gold interior. Unknown to many Chevrolet enthusiasts, Chevy experimented with the gold-on-tan color combo on a Corvette before the 50th anniversary Impala. GM Styling completed this Corvette s transformation on January 16, The build date is in advanced of the Chicago Auto Show in February, where rumors circulated of a golden Corvette displayed for Chevrolet s 50th anniversary. Chevrolet decided to offer a 50th-anniversary model in a special golden color combination. The Corvette was considered for this particular paint color, but high-level GM brass believed the full- 27
size line would result in more sales. The Impala was chosen. Estimates are that they produced 350 Impala 50th anniversary cars for Because of this decision, it left this unique one-of-a-kind Corvette Styling Car. People often refer to it as the 50th-anniversary gold-on-tan evaluation car. The Mecum website says, Styling-car expert Werner Meier inspected the original GM Styling Shop Order tag mounted on the firewall and judged it authentic due to its crude patina typical of original tags found on other styling cars. The tag reads S.O , and upon further examination, many components on the car were also identified by shop order including the original interior kick panels and spare-tire board that has the number applied in grease pen. With this information in hand, Bloomington Gold Great Hall inductee Terry Michaelis immediately acquired the special car for his family s private collection. Two more years were spent by Fred and Terry Michaelis inspecting the car. The evidence revealed gold paint under the dash and behind the striker mounted in the door jamb and signs of a tan leather interior. They matched the original paint color which was in a preserved section, hidden from the elements under the door striker. They completed the restoration in 2010 with new paint, interior, and top. The unique Firemist Gold paint copies the original as does the tan leather interior and beige convertible top. During the restoration, many original components were replaced. These pieces were kept and will be included with the car that will be auctioned at the Mecum Auction in Kissimmee Friday, January 13, Recent research has unveiled a title history with ownership history traced to 1979 in Lansing, Michigan, and Michaelis visited the National Corvette Museum to view the styling records. Interestingly, S.O precedes the pair of blue and pink 1963 Corvette Styling Cars built for Mr. and Mrs. Harley J. Earl by exactly 100 in sequence! 28
Under the hood of this 1962 Chevrolet Corvette Styling Car is a matching numbers 327/300 HP small-block V-8 engine with the Borg Warner T-10 4-speed transmission and 3.36:1 Positraction rear differential. The front grille is Gold anodized and is balanced with colormatched wheels. It rides on Firestone Deluxe Champion bias-ply white-stripe tires. Other features include the Wonder bar signal-seeking AM radio, sun visors, courtesy light, heater, spiral shocks, washer system, shifter, air cleaner and generator. Terry Michaelis of ProTeam Corvette in Napoleon, Ohio stated, Throughout my 45-year career in the Corvette business, several mid-year Corvette styling cars have surfaced however this is one of the earliest Corvette styling cars that I have ever seen. This car is one-of-a-kind, a truly unique Corvette artifact. It is estimated to be worth $175,000 $225, Firemist Gold Corvette Styling Car HIGHLIGHTS: 1962 Corvette GM Styling Show Car GM Styling S.O completed January 16, 1962 Special GM Styling shop order tag Commonly believed to be prepared for the 1962 Chicago Auto Show or a styling exercise to produce the 50th Anniversary Chevrolets with Gold paint and Tan interior Many components are labeled Gold anodized grille Matching numbers 327/300 HP V-8 engine 4-speed manual transmission 3.36 Positraction rear end Special Firemist Gold paint and Tan leather interior A forensic inspection prior to restoration revealed Firemist Gold paint and evidence of a Tan or Gold interior New paint, interior and top in 2010 Displayed in the Styling Car Showcase at Amelia Island in 2012 Part of the Class of 1962 Display at MCACN in 2012 Invited to the Ault Park Concours d Elegance in 2012 and 2013 Invited to the Eye on Design Automobile Design Exposition at the Edsel and Eleanor Ford Estate in
